Console debates are not something i usually get involved in and they all have their own flaws but seriously how do people keep coming to buy Xbox360s, the failure rate is so ridiculously high. Like it's so bad i wonder why they even shipped it.

Overheating - whatever, it's still bad console design.

It's fixed in the slim models and later versions of the original models. The problem is that the heat sink wasn't soldered properly.

I wonder what the SNES failure rate was, it's amazing that with so much technology our consoles have become less reliable.

The original DS was a fucking indestructible tank! In fact, they should model actual tanks after it because it's so durable, I fucking ran over my DS with my car and all that happened was a tiny little crack in the plastic frame around the bottom screen, no damage to the screen.

However, it did break when I accidentally stomped on it while it was open breaking a hinge for the top screen, it took about 1 and a half years for the connection between the screens to wear out from the verticle yanking when I played it (only one hinge was actually holding it together so it would tug at the cables when moved)... THEN, the top screen's picture slowly started to die out, and NOW my DS isn't functional, actually, everything except the top screen works fine, so I can still play pokemon since I've memorized the number of steps to go anywhere and pokemon cries to identify who I encountered. Then I said goodbye to my beloved DS and got the DSiXL.

Well fewer moving parts equal less potential for disaster. Lasers that read the discs need to be a certain nano or micro (can't remember) meter away from the disc otherwise you have an issue. With cartridges you either have a CLEAN connection or a dirty connection. I wonder if purchases because of faulty systems are taken into account when it comes to total sales of the systems. If so I wonder what the real number is.

I've had both my PS3 and Wii since launch and haven't had an issue with either system. My 360 died twice and I said screw it.

I was late to the party and didn't have a 360 till about a year and a half ago. It worked fine, I kept it in a place with plenty of air flow and I also never had it on for more than 3 hours at a time, tops. One day I cut it on and got some whack ass error so I looked up the error number thing and found out it was some overheating problem. I haven't bothered trying to get it fixed since it happened, it made me mad as balls.

Okay it's officially formulatic now.

1- somebody's console breaks.
2- somebody brings up the red ring, as a scourge of humanity.
3- somebody explains the red ring, and states why it's not really an issue anymore.
4- multiple people ignore 3, and complain about how Microsoft is screwing them, how Sony would never do this, and how they don't remember the disc read error ps2 fiasco.
5- number 3 retaliates, topic turns into console war.
6- somebody mentions nintendo.

The red ring isn't that bad. But the scratch ring is, at least when your house shakes once in a while because there's a ton of trucks in the neighborhood and they...
well I don't know what the fuck they're doing but it makes our house shake.

The rule of thumb when buying a used, "older model" Xbox 360. If it doesn't have a HDMI plug on the back, don't buy it.

The HDMI plug was introduced on the "Falcon" revision of the mainboard, which was the mainboard first used in the elite model, and the one that corrected the overheating issues.

My used XBox 360 came with a plug that didn't fit into the back of the console. There was an extra partition on the plug that I had to hack away in order to get it to fit into the back of the system.

While, we're bitching, you know what sucks? Every Sonic game after Sonic 2. Every game they give him a new friend, and it's not fair. Sonic has more friends than I do. I wish they would just resell me Sonic 2 every year with a different title on the box and stop trying to make new games. That would make me happy.

Mine doesn't even have an HDMI port, it is old as hell. I know it still gets ridiculously hot because I moved it the other day after playing Fable 3 to put my laptop on the desk. Even with a cooling pad under it, the bottom of it was almost hot enough to burn me. This thing will never last as long as my N64.

So i decided to be a bitch and buy a new one, hopefully i can fix my old one and sell it to gamestop or something. This will be my last 360 ever for i wont deal with this shit any longer

I agree that taking care of your console - mainly by making sure it is well-ventilated and that you turn it off if it gets overheated - should be common sense and such practices can extend the console's life. However, I know many people who aren't idiots with modern technology but still have had issues over multiple consoles. I recall reading an article that investigated the Xbox 360 launch, and if I'm correct it mentioned that the original model with the Xenon chipset had an over 50% failure rate. So, to some extent, Microsoft definitely favored getting on the market first over quality assurance.

I didn't buy it immediately at launch, but I have a Xenon chipset model which Red-Ringed after two years, even though I took care of it quite well. Thankfully, the extended three-year warranty covered it, and I believe Microsoft replaces up-for-repair Xenon chipsets with Opus chipsets, which are slightly better.

If you have a Falcon, Jasper, or the Vejle chipsets (Veljes were introduced with the new 'slim' model) and your Xbox is overheating, you're either terribly unlucky or you're seriously abusing your console.

At any rate, sorry to hear about your console problems, hopefully you can either have it repaired or get a new one without much hassle.
