Holy hell. Insane process to go through, and as the article states, most people wouldn't survive or be able to afford it. But they CURED a man of HIV! That's a glimmer of hope that they can make progress on this and find better and better ways to take care of it!

I asked my mom about this and she thinks this is awful news because it means stem cell demand is going to skyrocket. Never mind that they used bone marrow stem cells and not embryonic stem cells, which haven't been used in years.

Bone marrow stem cells can be collected from adults, so there's no problem whatsoever with that.
I'd guess the researched treatment would be to add that particular gene to someone's ADN for the newly formed lymphocytes to be resistant to HIV.
That, or nanorobots.

Controversy surrounding the use of stem cells, the 'true form' of which come from human embryos. So the fact that they used them at all in this cure is going to cause a shit storm among the anti-abortion people (because that's essentially what happens. You take away the stem cells and the embryo dies). I don't understand them, personally, it's basically the same as eating a fucking egg from a chicken.

Skin stem cells would be useless here though. Stem cells in adult are already partially differentiated, so you need blood stem cells to regenerate blood cells.
