I'm virtually positive at this point that Julian Assange is actually working for some kind of government agency. If people didn't want his group disseminating this information, really didn't want it, do you think they'd really be around? Seems like a big dog and pony show to me at this point.

This is the first forum I happen to read, that has so negative oppinion of the whole Wikileaks affair. (Intended as a neutral observation, I'm not trying to argue from my completely different standpoint as a foreigner.)

What do you guys think about the Iraq and Afghanistan leaks?

On the question of are these leaks good or bad,

Here's an analogy, if you're playing D&D the GM should be able to keep somethings from the player, but if he's adding drops to the end of a campaign to favor one player, or lying about whether his monster actually had a critical strike or not in a given situation, that's an abuse, and I would like that corruption outed. If he's keeping some story twist, or battle mechanics/tactics hidden that's fine we don't need to know that. Similarly I'm fine with the government keeping the number of people who know certain things small (like how to build a nuke, or battle strategies) I'm fine with that, I don't need to know that. If they're misusing or playing favorites with their political power, and our tax dollars, I would like to know about those deals, but inevitably there will be abuse, and I would like people to leak it out, so we can rectify it, but some things don't need leaked.

They accomplished very little but were talked about a great deal. I can't think of one death in either country that was likely a direct result of what's been published. Of course, we're a country that has multiple thousands of pages in some bills that even our Senators and Representatives acknowledge they don't read, so it's not like you can expect the American public to care. We've got our IPods and 3DTVs and new-year model cars.

My personal thoughts on the situation with those? Awesome smokescreen for something else that was probably happening.

I've wondered the same thing.

On Aeonic's point about whether Wikileaks is just a tool for the U.S. or certain countries to fake that intelligence has been leaked in order to confuse our enemies or even feed the public some propaganda, I'm not sure about that. Initially, I would think it wasn't that way, perhaps currently Julian is being duped, or maybe is being paid to spread these "leaks" as real. But at the start, and maybe even now, his leaks were legitimate. Based on the interview I saw with him, he does seem like a greedy attention whore, but i'm not sure if he could be bought out easily to knowingly put out fake leaks.

From everything I understand, it was inaccessible for several hours in both the US and UK.

So I understand Julian Assange has been accused of rape and an international warrant is out for his arrest.

Yeah, I totally buy this is a complete coincidence.

Which is funny, because technically, he hasn't been charged for anything. Maybe a test run of detention/arrest without formal charges for Europe? I find it hard to believe, though, that in our high-tech age where virtually anything can be tracked, that Assange can be rumored as being in the UK, where Interpol could easily grab him, and yet nobody's sure. It just gets fishier as the whole thing unravels.

Apparently he has reached Bond Villian Status. While I think that is awesome, the status not the man, we need a Bond to thwart his evil plans.

Hahahaha that is awesome.

Not going to lie. If I had that kind of money. I'd buy a Bond Villain Cave. But, it would turn out to be the ultimate gaming den instead.

I can't get to it right now where I live (not the US or UK) when I tested it.

Joseph Lieberman to Found S.H.I.E.L.D.

And now we know definitively what it stands for. Securing Human Intelligence and Enforcing Lawful Dissemination.

Senator Joseph Lieberman (patch pictured) is among those who have introduced the S.H.I.E.L.D. legislation that would make it, basically, what WikiLeaks did a federal crime, publishing the name of a U.S. intelligence source.

Of course WikiLeaks is founded by an Australian living in London when he;s not in Switzerland. So, you know.

It’s more likely to have an effect on, say, the New York Times, which did a deal with Julian Assange, along with other major worldwide newspapers, to disseminate the leaked ambassadorial communiques.

Lieberman wrote:
“The recent dissemination by Wikileaks of thousands of State Department cables and other documents is just the latest example of how our national security interests, the interests of our allies, and the safety of government employees and countless other individuals are jeopardized by the illegal release of classified and sensitive information… This legislation will help hold people criminally accountable who endanger these sources of information that are vital to protecting our national security interests.”

The act would amend an existing bill that forbids publishing classified information on U.S. cryptographic secrets or wiretapping to cover human intelligence. Leaking the information is already a crime, the act means to add publishing the information to the list.

Watch for a series of attachments to the bill, however, that cover care with wheels that flip up to fly, and a trillion dollar budget diversion for a helicarrier.

Only if Joe Liebermann gets an eyepatch will I be behind this. Dick Cheney is already a cyborg with no pulse (that's not a joke, search Dick Cheney has no pulse on any search engine) so they can use him like the Roxxon Corporation uses Deathloks.

The Latest Leak is fucking outrageous. Now hes leaked KEY infrastructure to the United States what they are calling an "Al Qaeda targeting list"

Everyone who was preaching about how they were leaking things about the "darker side of the government" Now he just leaked a bunch of targets that could cause MAJOR damage to the US.

List included things like pipelines and undersea telecommunications cables as well as the location of minerals or chemicals critical to U.S. industry. The list also mentions dams close to the U.S. border and a telecommunications hub whose destruction might seriously disrupt global communications.

What the fuck is he proving this time? That he hates the US and thats it? Again, like I said before. Hang his ass by his feet and cover him with fire ants. Except this time cover him in honey first.

He's an ass goblin for sure, but we can't put the blame solely on him, as there are hundreds of equally douche gobbling people working under him. He's the spokesperson and editor and chief which means he has say as to what goes on there for sure, but he's not the only person calling the shots as to what content gets listed. So save enough honey for a couple hundred more people, and the people that support this horse shit.

Also, I'm pretty sure he's Sephiroth.

New News, Assange has been arrested in London, turned himself in.

Hes refusing extradition to Sweden though.

Douchbag.

Also, WikiLeaks has also posted a massive, closely encrypted file, identified as "insurance" -- a file Assange's lawyer has described as a "thermonuclear device." Assange has said the more than 100,000 people who have downloaded the file will receive the key to decoding it should anything happen to him or should the site be taken down.

"The insurance file will only be activated in the gravest of circumstances if WikiLeaks is no longer operational," Hrafnson said

God can only know what that file has contained in it.

Unless they happen to be close personal friends of the President. Or have vast wealth of some form that we can exploit. Or happen to be working against our enemies at the time (ex: Taliban during the Afghan/Russian conflict who're still firing our leftover missiles). Or who happen to be sovereign nations (ex: Israel). I could go on, but you get the point.
