From 1up.com

Wii Speak, Nintendo's voice chat peripheral for the Wii, may be reaching the end of its life cycle. Go Nintendo notes that the underused device is currently listed as "discontinued" on Amazon.

Furthermore, High Voltage Software's Eric Nofsinger recently spoke with Bitmob about Conduit 2 and its lack of Wii Speak support. Although the first Conduit is among the handful of games to utilize Nintendo's first-party chat solution, Nofsinger explained that for the upcoming sequel, "Nintendo told us to not use Wii Speak."

So is the Wii Speak done for? In an official statement obtained by MCV, Nintendo claims, "We're still supplying Wii Speak and it's still very much available should retail want to order it."

That's not the clearest of answers, but if Nintendo is actively telling developers not to use the device and the world's largest online retailer has apparently washed its hands of it, then the future doesn't look terribly bright for Wii Speak.

Off the top of my head, I can only think of two other games (Animal Crossing: City Folk, and Monster Hunter Tri) that used it.

Nintendo needs to get its shit together and either support their peripherals, or just don't bother releasing them.

I don't think it's anything to be excited about... Maybe Nintendo is discontinuing Wii Speak (a little box you put on the TV to communicate your voice through the wii) so it can come out with a better product that will do the same thing. Maybe a headset like the 360, that would be nice. Since the few times I used Wii speak it had a problem of taking in all of the background game noise and not really getting my voice very well.

Had it come with the console, been available at launch, and worked with all online games, we wouldn't have this problem.

Nintendo sure knows how to drop it's balls.

Edit- And let's discuss this headset idea.

You now have a wireless remote witha wired nunchuk attached to it, with a wired headset attached to that.

Either that or it'll be blutooth and too expensive to bother with.

I don't understand why they don't have a wireless nunchuck available. I have seen them by other companies but I hate non-Nintendo controllers. I would definitely enjoy having the nunchuck wireless.

Obviously Nintendo stated this to make the costumers buy the Speakers available to minimize their financial loss. If they would have said that the Speakers are dead, they could dump them and that means that they would lose alot of money.
Irresponsible of Nintendo to do so.

Well, as limited as the support/games available for the Speak may be, there are games that use it, so offering their inventory isn't really a stretch or a bad business decision. If you sold a product and someone wanted it, would you tell them no? Not if you like staying in business.

It's weird that they told Conduit 2 not to use it. I mean, it already exists, and it's not like failure to have it breaks the game for you.

Everytime a company introduces a peripheral, they hold it to catch on. Clearly this didn't, so Nintendo pulled the plug. It was pretty evident that this was going to happen.

November 2008 - Animal Crossing: City Folk comes out. Wii Speak debuts as a pack-in.
February 2010 - Endless Ocean: Blue World is released. Wii Speak is included as a pack-in.
Aprill 2010 - Endless Ocean w/ Wii Speak drops to $29.99.

In two years, there have been 12 games with WiiSpeak support released in North America. There are apparently only 4 in Japan, if Wikipedia is correct. The NA releases are:

Animal Crossing: City Folk
Endless Ocean: Blue World
NHL 2K10
The Conduit
Uno
NBA 2K10
NBA 2K11
Monster Hunter Tri
Tetris Party Deluxe
Jeopardy!
Wheel of Fortune
Mix Superstar
