From: http://www.geekosystem.com/owns-the-sun/

Angeles Duran, like many before her, has decided that a weird quirk of international law makes it possible for individuals to make claim on extraterrestrial real estate. Unlike others, however, she decided to make a claim on a celestial body that actually has a minute to minute effect on at least half of the globe at any time.

And that’s not counting its reflection off the surface of the moon.

Ms. Duran, of course, has made a notarized, registered claim on the star we call the Sun, and says she’s going to start charging people to use it.

The whole idea of individual people laying claim to balls of rock and/or gas 240,000 miles away at the closest can be said to have started in 1967, when the United Nations ratified the Outer Space Treaty. It stated that space is the “province of all mankind” and that bits or the whole of it could not be claimed by any world government to the exclusion of another (not even through the cunning use of flags).

The treaty, which was signed by 98 nations including all space-faring ones, made no mention of individual world citizens and their ability to stake claims on outer space. So, many individual citizens started saying that they had claimed such and such patch of real estate on the moon or other bodies in the same tone that people announce that “dog” is “god” spelled backwards: as if they had just done something very clever.

(My apologies to Terry Pratchett.)

Twelve years later, the UN attempted to head off this silly sort of stuff before it got out of hand by finalizing the Moon Treaty, which, when it went into effect five years after that, forbade private ownership of extraterrestrial real estate. Today, the Moon Treaty has only been ratified by 13 governments, none of whom have space programs. Spain is not one of them.

And so, Angeles Duran, Spanish citizen, has registered the Sun as being her property at her local notary public, and is confident in her claim:

wrote:
There was no snag, I backed my claim legally, I am not stupid, I know the law. I did it but anyone else could have done it, it simply occurred to me first.

And, yes, you heard us right, she plans to start charging for the use of her new property. According to the AFP, she plans to donate half the proceeds to the government of Spain, 20% to Spain’s pension fund, and 10% each to scientific research, ending world hunger, and herself.

We wish her luck with enforcing her claim. Wait, no we don’t. Now could we please get some solar subsidies up in here?

OBVIOUS URANUS JOKE AHEAD

Has someone claimed Uranus yet? It's been sitting in my solar system for god knows how long stinking the place up yet no one seems to want to clean it up!

Seriously though, while this seems like a whack-job making a profit, it seems like there is no way for her to fully enforce this unless it's on a public medium like on Television or Radio.

One time, it crashed my house's electricity with a particularly strong solar flare. I complained immediately, but was never compensated.

LOL! Laughing

Also, if she is going to 'own' the sun, well I'm going to take owner ship of this star:

Maybe I'll even see if I can take ownership on oxygen and charge people to use it.

Haha! Beat that! Twisted Evil

Heh, this made me chuckle.

Let's say this did pass and she won. The sun is critically important though it's actually arguable in how we use it. Think about it really, light/sun isn't even listed in the basic needs.

It's all a large cycle but as individuals we could probably live without the sun. In terms of crop growth etc. we are fucked but still there is no possible way we could be charged for usage of the sun personally as we don't use it...

...and in fact the sun is forced upon us! We don't get any choice in the matter it's simply there so as a counterargument i demand that the sun is blocked up everywhere that it can be considered that i use it. Like i said just install street lights everywhere.

Enjoy paying for that. Let's also consider that this woman and who ever inherits the sun in the future is responsible for it when it goes supernova, enjoy having that on your mind, the explosion (or if not that the radiation) will destroy this planet.

Puts a new perspective on climate change, let's say sun spots are a cause of significant rise in temperature. We all know who to blame now and to point our finger at!

What i have just came up with there is ridiculous as the idea of owning the sun itself.

Actually in retrospect we DO need the sun, the heat from the sun keeps Earth average temp at approx 15C, without gases in the atmosphere it's like -1 or something, i can only imagine what it would be like without heat.

Hmmm heat is a byproduct of the sun, i never thought of that!

Yeah i've thought into this way too much lol.

This is a fun story.

A few thoughts popped into my mind right away.

1. This thought would be sick and sadistic if applied to any other human being, but for her with the irony, wouldn't it be funny if she got skin cancer from too much sun exposure? Would anyone treat her without blackmailing her for a bit of the sun.

2. The amazing thing about owning property is that it is usually taken away if you don't offer a physical defense to it.

3. What recognizable world power would not exile her if she could actually claim the sun and force demands on it?

If she owns it, then get the fuck off Earth and go live on it. Then you can charge me for it.

With all this planet buying and moon purchasing you hear about, if this shit holds up throughout time and we one day get personal spaceships and move to other planets, I know my great great great great great grandkids are going to be PISSED that Super Great Grandpa was too much of a cheap ass to buy up 9,000 Acers of Moon for 500 bucks and pass it through the family.

This made me think : the way the law is made, doesn't that mean she can only charge people who would go live on the Sun? Razz

I would like to lay claim to the air, and will deny this lady oxygen, unless she supplies sun to everyone for free.

This reply, off that site was much better than mine:

So, if she claims to own the sun and plans to start charging everyone for its use….I say we get a group together to sue her for Skin Cancer and other sun related illnesses such as sunstroke and the like. She should be taking proper measures to prevent that from happening!
And what about the interference and damage caused by sunspots? We’ll see if they are singing the same tune when we level these lawsuits against them!

She clearly hasn't thought this through, do you have any idea how expensive the infrastructure to track and bill every living thing that benefits from the sun's rays would be? The printing costs alone would be redonkulous!

Pshh, we're not actively using the sun, we're just nearby while it does its thing. It doesn't cost the price of admission to stand outside a concert.

That got me thinking on a weird tangent, how freaking metal would it be if Nile somehow invoked The Egyptian Sun God Ra during a concert causing the sun to move closer to the earth and char broil everyone? BURN!
