Any idea where to get special tools to open up consoles and carts? I know I could buy them online, but I've always wondered if a store like Radio Shack or something would carry them. Confused

You can only get them online. They are made specifically for games, those bolts are found in nothing else so that is why.

I remember looking around for screwdrivers like that all over the place and every store employee kept saying to go to 'X' store only to have them tell me to go look in the store I was just in.

I'd rather buy new connector pins for my two classic-style NES units than buy a whole new model. The top loader thing isn't worth it for me.

Bizarre side-story - I picked up a bunch of NES carts for cheap once, one of them was the Color Dreams "classic" Challenge of the Dragon.

I popped it in, and...the Rush 'N Attack title screen popped up.

I looked on the back, and in addition to the video store label, there were small holes in the paper where the screws were. It looks like someone rented it, opened it up, and changed the game. I confirmed this myself (I think the game only had Phillips screws).

The most bizarre thing? Someone out there thought Challenge of the Dragon was worth stealing in this way.

You can buy one on Ebay for about $2.

Well, of course it work. But consider the snes controller:

Here you dash with b and jump with a. The difference is that the jump button is no longer below the dash button, but over it. Of course it works, but when holding the controller, the snes way of steering Mariois muuuuch better IMO, because that fits with the general way I hold the controller.

I guess it is just a matter of taste, but I always preferred the snes way, and since the regular nes-controller is somewhere between these two, I like it better than the dogbone, but not as much as the snes one.

I actually have a screwdriver set with the * tips as well as some other weird ones. I got it at Lowe's or HomeDepot I think for like $5-$10.

There's a special piece you can get to use the Game Genie for the Top Loader (but for crying out loud, do you need a Game Genie? It's just cheating yourself out of true gaming skill).

I would just recommend using an original "toaster"/front loader, replacing the 72-pin, and cleaning the games with a q-tip and rubbing alcohol. Blowing on the cartridge is bad because there's moisture in your breath that corrodes the contacts. Plus, the toaster gets a clean A/V signal.

Game Genie can sometimes make a game more fun depending on what kind of codes you use.

Doesn't the front loader bend the connections when the cartridge is pushed down? Are there any case mods out there where you can get rid of the ZIF thing and just cram the game directly on to the connector?

When I changed my pin connector, I somehow managed to not put it completely right together again, so now the game somehow mysteriously loads even though I do not push it down. Since I did it by accident, I can not imagine it being very difficult.

Game Genie actually had codes that made games tougher. I distinctly remember looking at codes and being like "Always die in one hit? Who the fuck wants that?"

I want to get a big flat screen TV so I can hook up my computer and knockoff playstation controller and play all my old school games in the living room again, instead of hunched over the computer. I want to get some of those usb NES SNES and Genitals controllers but they're kinda pricey. Confused

I am using emulators a lot as well, but there is just nothing that can beat the sheer awesomeness of booting up my 20 year old nes and play the games on my old crt-tv.
