My laptop has been having some issues so I thought I'd ask around here since people seem to know their shit.
Every time I turn it on, it gets stuck as Windows starts to load (Vista 32 bit if that matters). The screen just shows 'Microsoft Corporation' while the status bar continues to move for about 5 minutes. Then it either goes to a black screen or it restarts itself and the process begins again.
I tried running Windows in safe mode and got the same problem. I also tried re-installing Windows and that stalled out right away too.
The fans run. The DVD drive works. I can get into the BIOS.
I don't hear the hard drive starting up so I think that might be the problem but I was hoping for a second opinion.
Possibly related: My power adapter has been loose lately where it plugs into the computer. It has to be in the right position or else it doesn't work. If it gets out of position the screen starts to flicker as it goes back and forth from 'plugged-in' to 'power saver' mode. Not sure if this could have damaged something?
THANKS FOR ANY HELP!

Boot off the Windows DVD into a repair console with a command prompt and run the command:

I can't seem to get that far. Here's what happens:
1- Press key to boot from DVD... CHECK.
2- 'Windows is loading files' That completely finishes.
3- I get the 'Microsoft Corporation' screen with the status bar again for about 10-15 seconds then the DVD stops spinning and the screen goes black. I tried ejecting and inserting the disc to see if it would continue but it didn't help.

I tried to start in safe mode again and the files were loading then it stopped at crcdisk.sys
I googled it and it looks like its happened a lot with Vista. Hopefully I can find an answer.

Sorry I can't be much help, but Vista is a horrible version of Windows I'm sure you've noticed. My last computer had it and it was plagued with problems. If you know someone going through Computer Classes at a local college, a lot of them give out New Copies of Windows 7.

It could be a Vista issue, however, if you are having the issue even when trying to install the OS, it sounds more like a hardware issue.
If you are not getting steady power, that could cause issues for the CPU and/or RAM. Most CPUs run at a set voltage. (such as 1.4v) If that drops too low, then the system crashes as the CPU sputters out. If it goes to high, then the CPU's temp will spike and it will shut itself off.
What happens when you try to install just off a full charged battery and not the AC adapter?

I tried it off the battery and got the same problem. I also tried to run Ubuntu from a CD and that had basically the same problem... it froze as soon as Ubuntu tried to load. I also couldn't install Ubuntu.
My research on crcdisk.sys says that its a problem that can happen with Vista after an unexpected shut down. They gave about 20 different solutions so I guess I'll start going down the list.

Do you have any other OS installation disks? (example: Windows XP) If you do, try booting off them.
Also, does your laptop have a replaceable hard drive (usually found at the bottom of the laptop after removing a certain cover) or a fixed one, if it is removable, remove it and try to boot from that Ubuntu CD or Vista CD you have. If it works, put the hard drive back in, try the CD again. If it doesn't work again, it could be something wrong with the hard drive. (Note: if it does work after putting the drive back in, you might want to back up your data. If this happens again in the future, replace your hard drive)
BTW, I have had the same problem once. I don't clearly remember how I fixed it but I think that it involved removing and reinserting drives.

It is definitely a hardware issue. I would begin by resetting the BIOS. If it is under warranty I would contact the manufacturer.
The fact that you can't boot into an OS disk is really the kicker. It means that you won't be able to troubleshoot in a hard drive installed OS.
