It's more fun than X-Wing?
It didn't look as chunky and had a better physics model and controls and sound?
It let you play as the bad guy?
A more interesting campaign?
It came out a year later (1994) than X-Wing, which was a crucial year for PC game development and that year added the benefit of much better game play structure?
Pick one.

I don't consider "Letting you play as the bad guy" a contendable reason for game of the year, let alone one of the top games of all time.

Clearly you don't believe that TIE Fighter measures up well to X-Wing, but you haven't really given a reason as to why. Also, "Game of the Year" is a subjective award given out by many publications... could you please be specific about which one gave the rating?

I've never played TIE Fighter, and I haven't touched X-Wing in years. I'm just wondering, as someone who has been subjected to all the praise the game has recieved over the years, why its so well praised, if it is essentially the same game as X-Wing. Woodsy did list some acceptable reasons, I just thought one of them was dumb. What were the improvements made over its predecessor?

Give it a whirl man, you will enjoy it. I know "you can play as the bad guy" isn't as attractive when you are twenty something as it was when I was 10, but I assure you that it is a much more fun game. There are always people who will disagree, but they are probably the same people who will try to tell you that Rise of the Triad was a good game.

Hey! Rise of the Triad was a good... oh man... I can't do this with a straight face or even complete it as a sentence. That doom wannabe was a steaming pile of shit.
Tie fighter was not.

TIE Fighter was hella fun, but I can see someone not liking it if they're just firing it up today. It hasn't aged well, it's sometimes not clear what you're supposed to be doing, it can get very dull in parts, etc. I personally loved it back in the day and still do.
Rise of the Triad as a kill 'em up is a fun game. I loved all of the cool, useful weapons, but it was ugly (enough to affect gameplay) and badly-mapped even for its day. I only learned recently that it was orginally intended to be a Wolfenstein 3D sequel.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind. |

I remember reading about ROTT in some text file I found on the Duke Nukem CD, it sounded so cool. I only recently got to play it, not sure if it was fun back in the day, but I can tell you it sure hasn't aged well.
