There have been about 35 million Wii units sold in the US so far... Nintendo is saying that when 45 million are sold they will start to discuss a new console.

So if you don't already own a Wii, please go buy one so that Nintendo will upgrade their hardware. Thanks.

Eh? Will it ever reach that level? It would probably take another 3 years to reach that level meaning 3 years before they even start thinking about Wii 2.

Wouldn't you want to do the exact opposite? When sales halt, shouldn't you start working on the next thing? I don't understand this approach.

How many of the 35 million need to be collecting dust before they start thinking about a new one?

Yea GP, I read that as well.

I think that was just Reggie talking because honestly, Nintendo already has to be hard at work to the Wii's successor. I bet we see a new Nintendo console in 2012, maybe 2011, but more likely Fall of 2012.

Consoles have much longer lives than they used to, just look at PS2.

Yeah, I'm sure there's already a prototype of the successor being tested as we speak.

I doubt that Nintendo R&D ever stops. That is most likely true for all of the consoles. They may be looking at the cost/benefit ratio for using current hardware vs old hardware. Remember, a Wii is cheap as shit to make now and if people still want them, why sell a device that has significantly less profit built into it?

But people don't want them? Seriously, if you wanted a Wii, you'd have it already. Today is the 4th anniversary of the Wii launch. You've had 4 years to get the damn thing. Who are they hoping will buy it, 10 million low income families? Because those are the people still buying PS2s. And if those people want Wiis, they'll buy them used from GameStop.

This Christmas is their last chance to sell the Wii in North America.
