Wow, Syd. You are really reaching with this Top Loader hate. I don't have any clue where Nintendo could have got the crappy design for the dogbone controller....
You wanna keep blowing, have at it. Me, I don't blow, I play Darkwing Duck whenever I damn well feel like it.

The SNES controller design makes sense, because it has more buttons. That design doesn't work for a NES. As Blackout said, if it had turbo buttons, it would be okay.

Ok, on the controller I'll agree with Syd. The classic controller should have remained. The dog bone one sucks without more buttons.

Well I've managed to keep my good ol' front loader beast intact, and have only had slight problems with my cartridges. I'm still SO pissed that my oldest brother lost Paperboy and Super Mario Bros. 3. I'm rather pleased with my set up otherwise. Advantage, Zapper, wait, the Zapper broke. But I have 2 controllers, several decent games (SMB 1 and Americanized Doki-Doki Panic among them), and a massive flat-screen that screws up the entire thing. Luckily, there's a third-party retailer that still sells all of that classic (and not-so classic) hardware. Even Dreamcast keyboards.

The dog bone actually feels better in my hand than the rectangle.

Agreed. I will always look at the rectangle more fondly, but won't pretend there aren't better alternatives.

I prefer the rectangle, and I don't even own a dog bone, since I bought my system used and was too lazy to care about a controller.
If you want to talk about inconvenient or stupid controllers, look no further than the original XBox controllers, those things sucked.

Either is fine, rectangle is my preference. Though I have developed strong keyboard skills for NES playing which may even be better than a controller for reflex type games.
I own aa original NES and use the rectangles and it's always a bit funner loading a cart and picking up the controller and playing on my TV as opposed to on the computer. And front loaders are sooooo fucking easy to fix I really don't see the problem with them at all. Not to mention as I read above, it seems that the top loader has some issues with picture clarity.

You know what really sucked? The NES Advantage. That thing was the most uncomfortable piece of shit ever.

Also the X and Y buttons aren't concave. What's that about?

The Dogbone controller is terrible, you can not play Mario the way you are supposed to (holdning the dash-button with the thumb, and using the inside of that same thumb to jump) because of the stupid way the buttons are placed. Regular Nes-controller is waaay better.
I actually imported a Toploader to Europa a few years ago, and even though I like it alot, I still prefer to use the good old NES as the picture quality is just so much better. Nice to have for NTSC games though.

Looks like a Super Famicom controller, although I did have a third party controller like this one when I bought my SNES. Of course I wanted to use that one instead of the one with girly purple buttons, but like most 3rd party controllers, it lasted about 3 weeks before it gave out.

I'm aware the four chips are the Super Famicom logo, but wouldn't the controller say Super Famicom? Third party is a fair bet.

The old ZIF NES to me is more aesthetically pleasing, but the top-loader is more built to last in comparison. The ZIF had problems with dust collection, and the springs would get all fuggered, the latter being a permanent problem, the former a temporary (with cleaning included). The only real problems with the top-loader are space (those cartridges can take up some space (really only a problem if you use an entertainment center with narrow shelves), and the RF output. Considering I'm a purist who insists that any 8-bit and earlier consoles should be played on a CRTV with an RF cable, it's not a problem for me, but I can understand anyone else's concern. My opinion is that if you can get a very good condition NES and have the ability to maintain it well (clean it, remove games when done using them), get the old-school ZIF. If you just want to play some games without worrying about the console degrading, get the top-loader.
Also, those SNES controllers mentioned were available in America, too. I know a few kids who picked up SNES's while they were cheap (mainly around the era when the N64 came out), and they all had those weird, multi-colored pads with the big logo.

Best thing is to get both the ZIF and the Toploader

Um, is your thumb bent at a weird angle? Because I could pull that off just fine.

I don't notice any difference between the dogbone or the rectangle. I just pick up whichever and play.

I actually have one of those controllers. It's broken though.

The Pal SNES is one ugly looking console.
And Mario with the dogbone is no problem.

I tore apart a five screw copy of Gyromite because I heard there's a famicon adapter in there, there wasn't.

Not all copies of it do. All copies of Stack Up do, though. If it has the adapter, it'll be heavier than a normal cart.

I really just wanted to see what it looked like, I have no desire to play Gyromite, so I didn't mind mangling the cart.
Fun fact, getting inside an NES cart with nothing but a heavy pipe wrench at your disposal without damaging the board inside is time consuming.
Board still works, although it's kind of hard to get it in and out of the toploader with the cart to grip on.
