If you were like me during the era of the NES, SNES, and maybe even the N64 (i.e. before reliable internet/GameFAQs) you probably called Nintendo's game help/tip line at least once. In my case, I recall asking for help with some bits in Breath of Fire II (not knowing where to go next) and Illusion of Gaia (specifically the area with the blinding white light in Angkor Wat [I think]).

Anyway, apparently that service is no more. Any attempts at dialing the number now will only receive an automated message stating “This service has been discontinued. For gameplay assistance, there are numerous online resources available. For general product information, please visit nintendo.com.”

Thus ends an era as old as the NES itself.

Probably a good move. It's true, internet killed the game hint phone line star.

I never called. I feared my dad opening the phone bill and seeing all the charges.

Ditto. Still, I was certainly well aware of it, and this does feel like the end of an era. Time marches on...

I called like 50 times when I was simultaneously playing Shadowgate and Dragon Warrior II. My mom screamed at the phone company for half an hour and got the charges rescinded, but I still got yelled at, grounded, and possibly a mild thrashing.

I remember my brother called when we had no clue what to do in the Bill and Ted game for the NES. They didn't really help and that game was pretty lame. Still, it was cool that they were around when they were.

I actually never called it. I usually just tried to find it in strategy guides or Nintendo Power. If I had been gaming prior to 1992, I might have actually called though.

I wanted to call so bad, but there was no way my parents would have let me.

I use to call the hotline for tips for Super Metroid if I'm like trying to find all the power ups back in the day. My Grandmother was not pleased at the phone bill the next month. LOL

Subscribers to the magazine received a free Super Metroid strategy guide at some point... I know because I still have my copy.
