That makes Doom actually more realistic. If you were infiltrating an enemy base, it's very likely you'd have to backtrack and find a key after killing everyone in a given area.

You used Doom and realistic in the same sentence.

You suck at Duck Hunt.

Did Doom rape your family or something? Most of us look back on it fondly and don't mind it's faults, you seem to talk about it like it fucked your dog in the butt or something.

It's not as if it's the only game I care about, I much prefer System Shock 1 and 2, Thief, or Deus Ex for FPS experiences, but I will always like Doom, and I will always prefer it to any Call of Duty game, any day.

He's a PC Gamer primarily. Which means if it's over two years old then it doesn't have GOOD GRAPHICS and therefore isn't worth playing. Also, Doom's probably not on Steam. Games are only good if you can buy them through Steam.

Doom is on steam, I bought Doom II for five bucks, but they have all the PC Dooms, Wolfensteins and Quakes...

He was making a joke about how Steam is lame.

I have no problem with Steam, I'm just more of a traditional guy and will probably never use it. I do understand that the future may be all digital downloads, but until that time comes and I'm forced to do so, I will not use Steam.

I use steam because of Counter-Strike, DoD and Portal, but I HATE it with a passion... There was a joke a long time ago that was common throughout the Steam Community: Steam: fixing what was already fixed. It seems like every game will update daily and made it sometimes extremely unplayable... And to play offline? Forget it unless it's a non-Valve game...

Also, I like to point out just real quick, that custom mappers, don't rely on simple maps when they make their own maps.

Maps for FPS's are definitely different then what they were years ago, it seems that the more popular games are simplistic to satisfy the people that want quick fire fight, versus exploring the world. Sure we have recent games which this thread has already covered, that explores the world, but a casual gamer is more likely to play the simple game then ones where we can go all around the "world"

No, I actually liked Doom and Doom 2. I just thought it was funny that Syd made a comment involving Doom being realistic. I was under the impression his comment was facetious but well executed and humorous. I was just playing along.

As for the game itself, by any set of FPS standards, the game is both graphically and play control dated, but still fun and original.

First, Steam does have Doom:

Second, I don't play new games very often. I generally play games that are about 12-18 months old. On the PC they are usually significantly discounted after a year, much more so than on consoles.

Example: I bought Borderlands this summer for $20.36 with all the DLC. I picked up Grand Theft Auto IV for $5. Civilization IV (with all expansions) for $10. KOTOR for $2.50.

Yes, I have a fast computer. I would need that without video games though. The graphics card, which is the only real gaming component cost me $315. About as much as a modern console. Equal power in a graphics card now would cost about $230.

I love Steam. For me there are a few reasons. They have great sales, they allow games to be played on multiple computers (I have it installed on 4) and they deal with game patches. However, on a personal level, I especially like Steam because it means that I don't need to organize a video game library. As an individual with OCD, it saves me a lot of anxiety to have no physical objects to organize. I don't think it is for everyone, much like Digital music downloads aren't for all. But I wouldn't shun it either. If they have a video game you want for 75% off the retail price, why not?

I'm just breaking your balls, GPF. On a serious note, Doom had some great level designs, especially given that it wasn't even real 3D.

The only difference between Angelfire and Geocities is that Angelfire still exists.

Fun Fact: Tim Willits went from amateur mapmapker for Doom, to one of the community mappers featured on the Doom 2 master levels, to an employee for id, to one of the co-owners of id software today.

Also, this article may take up a good chunk of your evening:
