Google has a new trick up its sleeve. Instant Search Preview allows you to see what the page you will be browsing looks like before actually clicking through to it.
For some people it doesn't work without turning it on. You can do that at this link:
http://www.google.com/landing/instantpreviews/
I had to refresh my browser before it started to work.

Not as annoying as the instant search that makes all the results come up as you type. I fucking hate that.

Seems cool, I also hate the "instant search", I disabled it after the 2nd time.

I didn't like the instant search at first, but I am used to it now. This seems like the type of feature that will speed up browsing, but not until it becomes second nature to use.

It's so ingrained into my habit to fully type out what I'm looking for that insta-search is utterly useless for me. I'm too lazy to disable it, though.

I was going to make a joke about ass porn here, but I'll go the serious route.
That insta-preview thing looks nice. I doubt it would work on my PS3, but still cool nonetheless.

But c'mon, how much will it actually speed up browsing? Two or three seconds?
Also: you can disable this shit! How?!?!?

If it were any closer to the search bar, it would disable itself.

This is kind of like the feature in Vista where if you hover over the taskbar at the bottom, you get a preview window of each minimized application before making it the active window. It's like that because it makes you go, "Oooh shiny!" but really has no use or practical application whatsoever.

For the amount of work I do on the internet, saving a few seconds here and there definitely adds up to a few minutes a day.
Lets say I do 20 searches a day.
Google says that they save 2-5 seconds per search. So lets call it 3.5 on average.
That is 70 seconds per day.
365 Days times 70 seconds is 25550 seconds.
25550 Seconds is 425 Minutes
425 Minutes is 7 Hours
So saving 7 hours a year seems not so bad.
Is it real though? Will I be more productive if I gain those 2-5 seconds at times that I don't need them? I don't know. I do know that I do more than 20 searches a day. I definitely feel like I spend less time searching than I used to and that the information I need has been more readily available.
Also, I like that if the results aren't what I want, I just hold shift, tap home, and start typing my next query. It is faster than pressing enter, waiting for a page load and then searching again.

I like that feature. I use it to check IRC while I'm reading something on the internet, so my eyes can multi-task and see if anyone's said something without stopping reading.

For that matter, why are all of the major search engines formatting their search results to look identical to Google's?
