I love King's Quest V! Not as much as IV and VI though.

Only one I hated was King's Quest III, that game was way too hard and it was bullshit.

i only played about 3 adventure games. Broken Sword 1 for ps1, wich was great.
Blazing Dragon for the ps1,
i think the monthy python were somehow invovled into that game and the last one i played was Monkey Island 2.
All i can say is that Monkey Island 2 was probably the best of those 3 i played... yupp.

it was the best of times
it was the blurst of times

Space Quest and King's Quest games are consistently fantastic.

Also, no love for any of the Zork games?

LOTS of love for the Zork games. But once you play through them 4 or 5 times, you've seen all the game has to offer. That doesn't stop them from being absolutely fantastic though. I always wanted to play the graphical Zork's like Grand Inquisitor and what not but never had the time.

Also, the "Discworld" games were fabulous, even though I never read any of the novels. "Spellcasting 101" was funny as hell, and definitely memorable.

"Loom" was alright, but never really wanted to play it again after finishing it.

Both "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" and "Fate of Atlantis" were probably some of my favorite Lucasarts games. They continue to amaze me, even to this day.

"The Dig" is when adventure games started to lose the "Wow" factor to me. Steven Spielberg co-wrote the story, and it's reliance on boring puzzles and "ooo pretty" factor made it less than enjoyable then games even 8 years older than it.

A topic that ends my lurking era.

As the language barrier gradually went away, I did play the hell out of Leisure Suit Larry, Day of the Tentacle and Monkey Island 1 & 2. Not to mention Fate of Atlantis! I've also re-played them later several times. The Monkey Islands in particular had so many jokes you just didn't grasp earlier.

I suppose it doesn't hurt to mention that there's very very good and free remakes of Kings Quest 1 & 2 and Quest for Glory 2?

Best game of genre for me is Gabriel Knight 3. Relatively new game (1999), but it just kicks ass so much. I think the genre is far from being dead now, as we've seen several good adventure games in the point n' click-vein recently. Adventuregamers.com is a nice source.

Not sure where you can download old PC games at, and I know you'll need DOSbox. Or for a small price, you can buy and download games at GOG.

I would say discussing emulating games that you can still buy should not be allowed. Just go buy them! Almost all the ones discussed are guaranteed to be 10 bucks or less.

Damn. I love adventure games, but have never played a single installment of the King's Quest series. Confused I've always been a Quest For Glory person. I love the first one especially. The second would actually be my favorite because of its unique setting, but the time sensitive nature of so many of the events just kills the fun for me--you never feel like you're free to just bum around and explore. Too bad.

I'd say start with either King's Quest IV or the VGA remake of KQ1.

The original versions of King's Quest I & II are fun, but they're very dated. They use EGA, which is a 16 color display, and they're pretty blocky. Here's a screenshot of KQ2:

Skip King's Quest III, it's crap. So is the sequel-in-name-only King's Quest VIII.

4-6 are the best of the series, which 6 generally being considered the single best King's Quest game. King's Quest VII is fun, but it's a little easier than the previous three installments, the user interface is simplified to the point of stupidity, and the many fans of the previous game feel the graphical style is too Disneyish.

I know I kind of ripped it a new one above, but I'd recommend V. It's a major leap forward in gameplay, it's absolutely beautiful to look at, and while it's only 80% fair, that 80% is really good.

IV is decent, one of the few games with a female protagonist, but, well, I think it lacks. I have heard excellent things about VI, it builds off of the ending of V, but I haven't got a chance to get too into it (I snagged it at a thrift shop).

And if you want the experience, and have a sense of humor, I highly recommend this one.

The "blocky" games aren't bad at all. I still play Police Quest I and Space Quest I-III. Actually SQ III isn't blocky (it's probably the best SQ). The Sierra games don't seem tough because I'm played them SO much, but if I stand back, I'd probably be super frustrated with them. The Black Cauldron was my first Sierra game. It rules. It uses the F-keys instead of typing. Scumm VM is awesome; it lets me play a lot of the Lucas Arts and the "blocky" Sierra games. Finally, Syd is right; KQ III is too hard...you spend half of the game mixing potions. Not fun.

Ever played King's Quest 6 and skipped the voice overs due to impatience? Anyone with in ear shot will ask you what the fuck you are playing when skipping the voice over will cause the following sentence to blare out of the speakers.

"Alexander pulls out his" (VO cuts off from clicking the mouse to skip)

"Alexander feels a strange pulling sensation!"

I remember I got KQ Anthology (KQ1-6) for 40 bucks over ten years ago. I imagine a similar package that includes 7 must exist by now.

Reading about these adventure games inspired me to download The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition today on my 360.

I agree with Syd that KQ 4-6 are the best ones with VI being the absolute pinnacle. I loved the earlier ones, but nowadays they are almost unplayable because of the text sparser.

KQ VI will always hold a dear place in my heart though as I was given it as a gift from my father after my junior high school graduation when it was brand new and I remember vividly being over the moon about it. I don't think I have a happier memory than that one.

There's a Sierra fansite that has King's Quest 1 & 2 VGA remakes.

The ones that I actually managed to play one way or another:
- Day of The Tentacle
- Sam & Max Hit the Road
- Blazing Dragons

And on that note, yes it was written by Terry Jones (who also created the cartoon of the same name); he even voiced Trivet and a few others in the game. I loved Jeff Bennett as Sir Loungealot, since it reminded me a lot of Monthy Python's Holy Grail.

Yup, and the software they used to make it is floating around the web somewhere if you want to make your own point & click adventure games.

I totally forgot about blazing dragons.

All the Lucas Arts adventure games were awesome.

I also remember a point and click Scooby Doo game for genesis that was pretty cool too.

I always wanted to play harvester for the pc.

My favorite adventure game would have to be Journeyman Project 3: Legacy of Time. One of the few live-action games with decent acting, and also had some interesting, yet sensible puzzle logic.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.

Has anyone else played Dragonsphere (I THINK it was made by MicroProse)? I thought that was a great King's Quest type of game (possibly better).
