I own this for the PS2. I originally got it because I was, like you, a fan of the earlier Turok games, especially the second one.

I don't think it's terrible, but I don't think it's good either. To me it just doesn't feel as fun as the N64 Turok games. The opening few stages in the jungle are also totally boring, and probably throw a lot of players off straight up. Once you hit the more tech like levels, it does get a bit more fun. Regardless of that, it just never seemed that good. I certainly doubt I'll ever play it again, though I'm always more then willing to have the odd play through of Turok 1, 2 or 3.

I just remember a level where I kept falling off pencil thin walkways suspended three million feet in the air and making my friend hate me in the multi player by constantly using that drillbit swarm gun that mercilessly hunts down anyone you shoot it at.

The original Turok was the first N64 FPS that I ever bought and I don't regret it. Coming up to enemies armed only with a knife, shooting an explosive arrow at a raptor and watching it flail as it died, amazing. After that I didn't get another Turok game until Gamestop was selling all their old N64 games and picked up 2. It didn't have the same appealing factor like the original, it just felt like it was a run and gun versus the original hunting feel of the first.
I never played Turok Evolution, but seeing the price drop within weeks made me think to avoid it. It may have been good, but I won't ever know.
The reboot of Turok was amazing, in my personal opinion. It made me feel like I was actually back in the original, stalking my prey and using the bow more then the plasma rifle or the minigun, but it was balanced enough to allow for you asses the situation and choose what you needed, in case you did need that minigun.

Yea Slayer, the first Turok was so awesome. I really like the "hunting" feel as you have mentioned.

Turok was awesome. So many awesome cheats (Disco Mode with trippy lights and dancing enemies was hilarious). I only played Evolution in multiplayer a few times, but I thought it was pretty fun.

"To generalize the thread more, are there any games that you happen to like that are universally panned by the fanbases of said games?"

Castlevania 64 & Legacy of Darkness
... more so LoD, since it's really just the finished C64 product.
These games actually got good-great reviews at the time, but have been panned by everyone recently. Then again, I dislike (anywhere from "meh" to "seething hatred") 1, 3, and Rondo of Blood so I must not be the best judge of Castlevania games.
I hate the rigid jumps, I hate enemies knocking you into pits, I hate the stairs, and I hate the slow-ass whip (particularly in Rondo).

Anyway, back to Turok...
I only played the first two games, which were both awesome. My buddy got Turok 3 and it looked pretty stupid from what I saw since it was divided into 5-minute missions instead of huge overworlds.

Rage Wars was a pretty cool game with lots of good weapons and highly customizable multiplayer. However, the single-player mode(s) were just multiplayer matches against the A.I., which was still fun but not as fantastic as the Turok 2 campaign.

Eh, multiplayer's never been the strongpoint for Turok.

Even the best Turok game, Turok 2, had rather banal multiplayer at best.

Anyway, I think I'll change the title of the thread to reflect a more general topic.

As for games, I like all the 3D Sonic games, even '06. I also happen to like Knuckles and Rouge's emerald hunting gameplay. I still hate the fishing, though (FUN FACT: The VA for Big the Cat also voices Duke Nukem).

I like Dark Sector and find it much better than Gears of War.

And True Crime: Streets of LA was much more than just a GTA clone. It was damn fun and I still find myself quoting that game. "Who wants a lead enema?"

Whatever Castlevania that was on the original Xbox that everyone seemed to dislike. I had fun with it.

Yoshi's Story. That was down to $20 within three weeks of its release. It was a beautifully designed game, even if it was easy as hell. And finding all the melons in each level was a decent challenge for older players.

I love the Sonic Adventure games, I didn't think they were universally panned.

And yeah, I can see the flaws in Yoshi's Story, but I don't think it was a bad game at all. Besides, who doesn't love the FRUITGASM! at the end of the level?

The two Sonic Adventure games were pretty well-liked, especially SA2. That's why they got ported. SA1 is generally regarded as "fun, except for fucking Big The Cat."

In recent years I have been more cautious with my game purchases. I have found some highly rated games I don't like, but in general I have steered clear of any really poorly reviewed ones. The up side is that most of the time it works in my favor, the bad part is that I might miss a diamond in the rough.

The odds are in my favor though and I'd rather miss one good game and afford one great game.

Back in the day when games were really reviewed by word of mouth and magazines, I definitely bought a few bad ones, but as far as I recall, I never really liked any games that were generally considered bad by others.

Honestly, I tend to rely on user reviews more than professional reviews. Professionals are VERY jaded, and often times, a professional is given a game to review in genre they don't even like. So some asshole is reviewing a shmup and complaining that it uses sprites instead of 3D models, or doesn't have as much content as Call of Duty. Unless a game gets a 5/10 or less from a professional review site, it's unlikely I'll read their review. But once you hit 5/10, that's when you start to see very serious and legitimate criticisims creep in.

I usually browse over GameFaqs user reviews, though that's probably not the best of places.

I've owned Yoshi's Story since it came out and honestly, aside from the lack of immediate challenge, the game is fine. You had the melons and also the high score mode which added moderate difficulty and a certain sense of competition. It also looked amazing.

I still can't get all the melons! There's that one mini-game where you have to carry the melon blocks past beehives, and I have no idea how you're supposed to pull it off.

I have found http://www.metacritic.com/ to be a useful starting point when reading game reviews. It isn't the final word, but it is a good place to begin learning about a new title.

I used to enjoy playing the infamous port of Pac-Man on my dad's Atari 2600 when I was a little kid. I was completely surprised and disappointed when I found out that it's considered one of the worst video games ever years later.

Believe it or not, I was crazy, or at least naive, enough to enjoy my friend's copy of Extreme Paintbrawl when I was younger, too. To this day, I still don't know how I was able to overlook the bad controls and crappy A.I.

People don't look very favorably on Kirby 64 these days, but it's one of the few games I begged my mother to buy for me.

Also, a lot of people hated Goldeneye: Rogue Agent just because it couldn't stand to the prestige of its predecessor, but I thought it was alright. At least enough so to go through the whole thing.

I'm not a bad enough dude, but I am an edgy little shit. I'll do what I can.

Big wasn't too bad, except for the fact he only had one real level. If they designed his other three levels as something more than "Fish in the right spot", he woulda been fine.

Besides, his theme song is catchy.

Sign me up on that list. I got the game when I was really young, so it took me awhile to figure out what the goal was and how important figuring out your location was, since you couldn't leave without tracking Yoshi towards your current area.

My mom noticed it was funducational and was actually pushed me to play it.
