What is (or was) LimeWire? A torrent site for music?

A program that allowed pedophiles to exchange pedophile things, basically.
It was a pretty good alternative to Napster after it was shut down, but quickly turned the way of the dark side, being full of viruses and the worst cretins known to man.

I occasionally downloaded stuff off there back circa 2004-ish. I don't recall getting a virus or anything from it. Kazaa was the worst for that. Kazaa was like banging an AIDS patient bareback during a herpies outbreak while sharing needles.

Yeah, Limewire was like the third stage of illegal downloading, being preceded by Kazaa and Napster. Once I realized that I had a firewall and couldn't get to the pirate bay, I stopped downloading illeglally all together.

I got SO MUCH Porn from Limewire... not so much music. Anyways, you could pretty much tell what was a virus and what wasn't, mostly because the titles or the size didn't make sense.

Ditto. The damage is done, and now there's like, what, thousands of P2P programs just like it except slightly better? They're capping the well after all the oil's flowed out of it.

Plus, Limewire is only one of the dozens of Gnutella clients. Guess what - shutting down a *program* won't do jack shit. If you still want your child porno, infected MP3s and TV show episodes, you're not affected - there's Frostwire, BearShare, Shareaza and other gnutella clients that still work.

You should totally check out the IRC channel.
While you're at it, go check out my band, Her Majesty's Heroines.

I still find people with Limewire once in a while. They invariably have plenty of malware. I never liked the Gnutella system, so I always depended on IRC and eMule to get whatever I needed until torrents were perfected. Speaking of which, I wonder how eMule is doing. I haven't touched it in five years.

I'm not sad to see "Super Virus Downloader 3000*" go. However, my question is, how do you shut down an Open Source Program? Also, it's not like it is a master server controlled by a company. It a piece of software that allows your PC to link with thousands of others and share files. There is nothing to shut down. They can shut down the company that made it, but the software will still be out there to be used.
Not to mention, even if they wiped every trace of Limewire off the face of the earth, all it will do is move all the users to Frostwire, or one of the other dozens of clones.

I did, and now, how the hell am I supposed to steal music?
Seriously, I did use torrents, because I can not justify paying even $10 for a CD that has one or two songs I like and a bunch of filler. It's been a long time since I bought an album because I liked the whole thing.

Not only is that not right, that's not even wrong. It's a meaningless statement. Saying something is "one molecule away" from plastic is like saying a farm is one letter away from a fart. Water is "one molecule away" from being explosive hydrogen gas. |

Ugh, limewire. Good riddance. I won't miss playing "Try NOT to find porn" on limewire. Seems like no matter what you typed in the search, you got porn.

Eh. I never had a problem with it. Got good music and there's no change in my computer, so I'm personally a little sad to see it go. Especially considering it shut down THE day I was going to get about 15 songs. Maybe I'll be productive for once. Probably not.

The only thing I ever used LimeWire/FrostWire for was pdfs of D&D game books each worth $30-$40.

I'm just curious as to what you guys were looking for. I've been using Limewire for YEARS and never got porn, and viruses were minimal. Although I mostly only got music and the occasional music video.

As I've said, I only got music. I've dredged up a treasure with "Rick+Mario" by I Fight Dragons. They're this chiptune-rock band. They're not particularly heavy on the chiptune, but it's there.

Never really used limewire. I did when I had my first iPod (nano 1G), but now I don't because the audio quality is shit in comparison to CD rips and music from the iTunes Store. Also, they never had album art. Sometimes I use TPB, but that's mostly for computer software, not music. Sometimes I still pirate music (on TPB) because I hate the RIAA.

I tried searching Slayer and ended up getting something along the lines of " Pussy Slayer" WAY more than actual Slayer. Even COMPLETELY unrelated things came up. Searching for Motorhead should NOT have resulted in "18 YEAR OLD GETS PLOWED IN THE BACK OF AN RV BY HER MAN".
Actually, thinking back, I can't remember if it was kazaa or limewire that was a haven for viruses.
