In the beginning of the game money plays a large role in how you progress through the first 15-20 levels.
After that, it is meaningless.
When my level 61 character dies I lose somewhere around $45,000,000. You can't even see that number on the screen because the highest number reported is 9,999,999.
Also, I pick up single weapons worth 5,000,000 - 7,000,000 at least once per playing session.
Once you break a mill, you'll never need money again and realize that being that wealthy in the game was not necessary. Oh... except for ammo slots. Yeah, but only buy the ones you use because future upgrades override previous ones, they are not incremental.

Thanks again for the input, GP. It's too bad that money becomes very unbalanced rather quickly, but I'd rather have other core elements such as gameplay and difficulty remain balanced.

In early levels keep an eye out on the gut vendors. Later it doesn't matter, but early on I've found Wildcats and Volcanos for sale, which is a very good deal.
Personally I cannot stand shotguns. The accuracy on them is often so low you cannot hope to get all of the pellets to hit, and crit rates are nonexistant. I prefer nice high accuracy guns like revolvers or sniper rifles, or SMGs in general. They often have good damage and relatively good accuracy if you get in a bit close, lillith in particular is a meat grinder when she has one.
Fire is the best elemental type. Most things don't have a shield, and damn near everything has more HP than shield. You should pick up an acid weapon before you go to old haven, and try and keep one on hand, on account of the fact that they kill Lance soldiers fast. Shock sucks, if you insist on one pick up a nice accurate shock weapon just before you start dealing with eridians. If its not accurate than don't bother, many eridians fly and stay far away when attacking, meaning a shock shotgun is worthless.
Price does not make all guns equal. Know the ammo, fire rate, damage, and bonuses that go into the weapon. The game will price a gun for a bonus thats not often useful, recoil reduction for a slow firing gun or a scope on a low accuracy weapon for example. Theres also personal preference that goes into it. I've passed up arguably better sniper rifles because I like my current one for its relatively high fire rate and 6 bullet capacity, making it practical for firefights.

Don't bother w/ sniper rifles as a soldier. Enemies typically spawn within range of any decent SMG, combat rfile or pistol and the low reload/clip size makes them far less effective than anything w/ a decent fire rate. Shotguns are almost equally useless since the damage per projectile is extremely low and unless you hit with all of them, you don't do anywhere near the damage the weapon says it's capable of.

Got to Level 10 as Roland tonight. I'm hooked.
So far I've been mainly using combat rifles and shotguns. The machine gun that I started the game with was pretty crappy (as GP mentioned, very slow reload times), but I found a three-shot-burst assault rifle later that increased my overall accuracy and lethality.
Shotguns so far seem pretty mediocre, although I'm assuming that over the course of the game I'll find some better quality ones. Playing Gears of War and Gears of War 2 over the years has gotten me into the up-close-and-personal range mindset, so whenever I'm safe to do so I tend to jump right into enemies (Skags and Bandits at this point) and just spray bullets hipfire style. Haven't gotten into any overwhelming situations yet, so time will tell if I can continue to get away with this.
A new question, if you all wouldn't mind:
-Does your weapon proficiency increase whenever you get experience from any source? A friend of mine leveled up in proficiency when we turned a quest in, so we've become curious on how exactly you level up gun mastery.
Thanks again for all the help, guys. This game is excellent.

Guns level up by killing dudes. Supposedly headshots earn more gun xp, but I can't confirm this.
Shotguns are pretty bad overall. Sleuth had a post earlier that goes into good detail on why they suck and I concur.

Weapon proficiency is earned when you kill an enemy with a weapon shot from the weapon you are holding. Quest experience does not count. Also experience from your special action will not count. This makes Brick very hard to gain proficiency with if you go Berserker with him. You shouldn't have trouble with Roland though.
Shotguns require a different play style than a rifle or smg. They are slow fire rate usually, so knowing when you get to take the shot and where it will be from need to be accounted for. They have the highest crit damage potential because each of the shots can crit individually and you can get a head shot with each one.
It is important to realize that not all shotguns are the same... or even similar.
Most guns have a variation of about 20-30% on accuracy. Not shot guns. They go from 0% - 80% as far as I have seen. If you have one at about 20%, you need to be close to use it. At 80% you can be at mid range. Shot guns also work best when they have an element on them. Without the element you really lose a lot of potential.
As for the choice of elements, character buffs will determine what works best for you. Brick will use explosive, while other characters will need to choose their Mods wisely to complement their weapon choice. Fire has the longest duration, however it blocks line of sight. Shock does less damage, but binds up the target. Corrosive seems to have the best penetration against the living, however I find that there aren't as many good high rate corrosive weapons available. Explosive is the highest damage, but often in the gun's stats, the explosive element weighs too heavy on the total stat for the gun and drags the rest of it down into the gutter. I really don't like explosive unless playing as Brick.

Me and my three buddies are almost Level 20. So far, things are going pretty good. About to fight Sledge and move out of the Arid Badlands rather soon.
Some thoughts...
-Shotguns are starting to become a bit weaker, although I just recently found a Maliwan x3 Shock Shotgun with a scope (unexpected) and 6X accuracy, a giant leap from the 1X-3X I've been using so far. I'll have to play around and see how beneficial the accuracy can be.
-Still haven't played around with Sniper Rifles too much, but Revolvers are quite ridonkulous in their own right.
-Haven't seen too terribly much in the vending machines that I want to spend money on yet, and I've been selling a lot of scrap weapons. so I guess I'm doing well on money for whenever something I absolutely need shows up. Playing in a team of four really helps out here 'cause we're pretty good on sharing what other people want. Haven't found a class mod yet.
Again, thanks for all your feedback, everyone, it's definitely smoothed out the learning curve.

Oh, this is punchout level advice but watch out for anything that has red text in the description. Those are guns with special unique properties, often ammo regen or excessive elemental damage, sometimes weird firing properties. Found a "bulldog" shotgun, which means its got an extended magazine, in my case 20. Still looking for a Wildcat SMG.

Why a Wildcat?
Hellfire is where it is at for an SMG, either that or Double Anarchy.

I use a solid Double Anarchy as my primary.
I have a slow shooting Hellfire and honestly, I can see how if I had a 2x Hellfire it might be better than the Anarchy, but I really doubt I'll ever find one.
For those who have not used a Hellfire before, they always light up their target with fire. The 4x Hellfire always seems to proc, so that means max shot damage and always hits with an elemental burn effect. Even with all of this, it is a slower death than a Double Anarchy up close unless the Hellfire has a fast fire rate. Er.. at least faster than 2-3.

Not exactly sure. I don't have DLC #4, but I have the others. I imagine as long as you have Borderlands that you qualify.

Make sure you get the game of the year edition at this point. Also, for what it is worth, if you aren't rushing to go out and play it with friends, you might want to wait until the Black Friday sales on Steam.

I probably will get it on 360, and is the DLC really worth the extra 20$?

So I fired this up again recently because some friends at work are playing it. My first time through, I played as a soldier. I wasn't too impressed. Assault rifles and MG's in this game basically all look the same, not to mention the Soldier's turret is just kind of lame. This time I started a Siren, and she's a blast to play as. I gave her incendiary elementals, incendiary weapons, and incendiary class mod, and now I can just jump into a group of enemies, nail one with a +800% melee attack, and set the rest on fire for massive damage. Then with my abilities, all of those kills go to decreasing the recharge for phase walk, and give me a damage boost to my guns.
This game rocks, and Gearbox is still officially my second favorite developer behind Valve (yes, I know the correlations or whatever).

Steam hooked me up automagically.
Level 69 right away and life is good. Things are still easy to crush with the Siren.

Whew. Turns out that the Xbox Live Patch hasn't been released yet, but I'm glad to see the PC and PS3 versions are up. Hooray for not being yelled at!
