Quote:
Starting on Saturday, October 16th, the 8-bit loving punk [Pat the NES punk - N.] will be playing every NES game back-to-back, taking in over 750 titles in order to raise money for the Child's Play charity. It's all in celebration of the NES's 25th anniversary, a gaming milestone we at Nintendo Life will be celebrating in our own special fashion.

That's... Fucking awesome, actually.

You should totally check out the IRC channel.

That's pretty amazing. Just wonder how long he's gonna play each game.

Pat the NES Punk is a cool guy. I need to watch his new vids.

Is he going to beat each one? What about the practically unplayable ones that are impossible to beat? Still cool though.

If he plays all 750 games for 10 minutes and 10 minutes only and has the next game set to play at the 10'00 mark it will ONLY take him 5 days and 5 hours.

Meaning that if he were to play all 750 games in 24 hours, he'd then need to spend like 2 minutes per game...

Doesn't quite sound as impressive as before, but still quite a challenge overall, especially for the console(?).

There's no way he'll be able to play through every game. It's likely he'll play anywhere from 2-10 minutes like you guys said, then swap it out.

The problem with a marathon like this (and I saw plenty of them when I ran Gamemarathons.com) is it is far too ambitious. Either he'll spend a lot of time on each game which would be great, but it'll take him 5-7 days to complete the marathon (which is impossible for one person to do without dying), or it'll just be a swap game-fest where more time is spent swapping carts than actually playing because he is trying to finish it within 24 hours or something.

Ah, I just looked again and read on his poster that he will only be going for 24 hours, so that's 1-2 minutes per game. That's pretty lame really. I could do that, so why would I want to watch someone else do it?

It takes me 5 minutes of wiggling the cart just to get the Punch Out title screen to look right. ding ding ding... ding ding ding.

Yeah, playing a game for two minutes barely constitutes as playing.

Would anyone actually watch him do it if it was him beating every game? You may check in every once in a while, but nobody would watch the whole thing.

The point people seem to be missing is this is for charity, and he's raising awareness for a cause. Ease up.

Obviously no one would watch the whole thing, but the fact that you could check in and watch him beat a particular game is a lot more appealing then watching him turn on a game play around with the controls then turn it off. He really needs to change the ambitiousness of this "Marathon"

It would be like me saying watch me look at 750 different boxes of food. It's for a good cause, sure but its not in the least bit appealing to watch and/or care about.

This is basically the equivalent of me flipping channels. If you've ever been around a "flipper", you know what I mean. It's not fun to watch, it's annoying. There's no reason to watch something because you never get a chance to focus on one thing for more than a short period.

I didn't look at the article, but is this the same guy who did the Mario marathon last year? Maybe he should focus on something different such as Mega Man or Castlevania.

He's doing it for Child's Play who doesn't really need any more awareness thrown their way, and a good chunk of these kinds of video game marathons (which have been going on for about 3 years now) raise money for the same charity. Except those marathons are real, hardcore slugfests where 3 guys will beat every single Mario game ever made over the course of 120 straight hours.

It's a real feat and an accomplishment that takes a retarded amount of planning beforehand, while this is just some guy "cheating" the marathon concept to get some notoriety for his website. Compare this to the Desert Bus for Hope annual marathon, The Mario Marathon, and The Speed Gamers and you'll see the difference.

I find it hard to believe that there are only 750 NES games.

I'm not a bad enough dude, but I am an edgy little shit. I'll do what I can.

I had this same thought. But then I remembered that the technological capabilities of back then were a lot less adept than we are now. I'm sure that a NES game took a lot more to produce, simply due to the fact that it was pretty much a new industry back then.

Um, how about no? People have been making video games ten years before the NES came out, even in North America. In fact, people creating a fuckton of video games the video game crash of '83. To prevent that, Nintendo only allowed each developer to which it was licensing the NES / Famicom SDK - and the 10NES lockout chip "preventing" unlicensed cartridges from being played on a NES - only <strike>six</strike> FIVE games per year, at least in Europe in North America.

I don't know if Japan had the same limitation in effect, but I highly doubt it, since the video game market never really bombed in Japan.

So, yeah, a bit over 750 oficially released titles is actually a pretty good measurement.

Sorry, I meant 'relatively' new, when you consider the stuff video game companies nowadays achieve. Razz

In fact there might actually have been even less games if some companies didn't decide to create additional company labels in order to get more games out on the market.
