http://egonitron.com/2007/05/25/the-truth-about-the-firefox-pipelining-trick/

This page will show you a small technique to make firefox pipeline and request parts of the page you are connecting to all at once, and assemble them on your browser. Rather than the standard setting which is to request the next part after the first one is done

EDIT: in that same about:config thing type "browser.ctrlTab.previews" (without quotations) into the search box and set it to "true"

it'll make it so when you hit ctrl+tab it'll bring up a preview dialog which is very nice and even has a managing type mode if you click on "Show all tabs".
Good for those who have more tabs open than the tab bar will show
Please note that it needs at least three tabs to show the dialog

Thanks man, I already knew about pipelining and 8 but I didn't know that the ng.layout thing made pages actually load slower!

Thanks, I had never even heard of pipelining before so I'm interested to see how much this speeds things up.

It sped things up noticeably for me.
But like it says in that article every computer is different so I dunno

EDIT:
About:config has some really nice things to help customize firefox.
However I don't recommend messing with it unless you know a small bit about programming, and HTML

Note: Before you fuck with your browser and come back here asking for help because it doesn't work, please don't. If you understand how the Mozilla preferences files work, how to reset them, how to fix them, then go ahead. But don't try this crap to get a 1 second jump on webpage loading unless you understand exactly what you are doing.

With that said, there is more than pipelining that can make your browser faster. It might not matter though if your network connection is fast enough. Granted, here where Syd likes to make everything as big as possible because he thinks that it increases his traffic rating with Alexa (it doesn't) you might see some benefit.

This is the best article that I have seen that shows you how to adjust the settings and sort them out. It has pictures and covers more than pipelining.

I'll study some of these and maybe give some a chance. The latest updates of Firefox have been responding badly with my old copy of Vista, to the point where a page loading can turn my computer into a slideshow.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.
