From kotaku:
One brave or foolish gamer claims he took out his shotgun, went somewhere remote, and tried a common video game first-person shooter maneuver. The results were painful.
This is how one man says he tried to back-up-and-shoot, using a shotgun, a broom, and a warehouse. He suffered some distress.
The details were revealed in the September 28 edition of the Giant Bombcast, at the one hour and fifty-eight minute mark, host Ryan Davis read the following e-mail from a reader named Bob Ruff.
| Ryan Davis wrote: |
Many contemporary first-person games seem to be designed so that running backwards and shooting at advancing enemies is a basic element of gameplay and necessary for defeating many enemies.
I tried this yesterday.
I took my shotgun into a grassy field in an abandoned warehouse and then tried running backward at full speed and shooting at a target I had pinned to a broom handle and thrust into a bucket full of earth.
The result of this experiment was that I fell backwards about 70% of the time and injured both my back and my skull.
Thusly, I believe it is our duty to convince game designers and programmers to design first-person games where running backwards is unnecessary. Enemies should stagger and respond to gun wounds at close range. A shotgun blast to the chest, legs, or face should suitably disable an opponent so they cannot continue to attack the player at full speed, requiring every encounter to result in a running-backwards Benny Hill-style comedy adventure.
Better yet, what if the player fell backwards 70% of the time and incurred some damage or loss of health? That would be an even better gameplay mechanic. I am brilliant. Someone should give me a job. |
Readers, please do not try this yourself. Still, thank you Bob for experimenting this one time and reporting the results!

He could try shooting himself then picking up a first aid kit to see if his wounds will instantly heal.

Wait... It is possible to run backwards? I just realised how fucking stupid that is, to even attempt. Did this guy fail science in school? I thought he would have at least put the pieces together, before attempting stupidity to prove a point. We all know games are never 100% realistic.
Recoil + running backwards = oww my head.

I'm so bananas I'm showing up to your open casket,
to fill it up with explosive gases,
and close it back,
with a lit match in it,
while I sit back, and just hope it catches.

roll you, and smoke the ashes.

Do you watch movies? Many things take 2 hours and if you're interested enough you can devote your free time to it. Of course if it's going on for 2 hours better be damn interesting!

Plus he's running at full speed backwards which is hard enough. I think the key would be timing your shotgun shots with your foot positioning, when your feet are passing each other (close together) during the run will be your most vulnerable position for balance. He needs to shoot the gun close to when a foot just hits the ground during the run, that'll be when they are farthest apart. Also, slowing down right before the shot would help a ton for bracing for the impact, then continuing to run as you reload. Overall, it's ridiculous no matter what you do especially with a shotgun. That'd just make it a lot more successful if you were actually attempting this in real life.

I think the key here is to remember that realistic shooters are already out there, and non realistic shooters are fun to play versus lets say a weapons handling video training manual.

Maybe, if you got some high trained special forces guy. to run backwards with a shotgun...
It just might be possible... .
...illogical, but possible...

I forget what game it was, I wanna say Doom 3, maybe. There was some FPS where if you went from a dark room to a light room really quickly, it would take a second or two for your "eyes" to adjust. That was fucking gay. I don't need that level of realism in my games.

I remember playing Modern Warfare 2, and this guy jumped down a flight of stairs. As he was in the air above me, I shot and hit him with my shotgun. I didn't kill him, nope he landed behind me and knifed me. This is the other example of "non realistic shooter" being "fucking gay."
My point is, they need to find some sort of medium. That way the game doesn't make it's players have handicaps. Based on how some people can abuse the unrealistic parts of the game.

That happens in Fallout 3 when you leave the vault. Entering a much brighter overworld.

Nah because those have been largely replaced with regenerating health, he should shoot himself and just wait to see how long it takes to heal.

What about the automatic shotguns in video games, do they even mane those in real life? Wouldn't it spray all over the god damn place, granted if it the kick didn't knock you on your ass in the first place...

I do believe automatic shotguns have significantly reduced range, and power. However, because of their fire rate, they are deadly at close range.

Yeah but isn't that overkill? Aren't regular shotguns deadly at close range? Do they have full auto grenade launders too?

Blackout, let me explain what the world overkill means.
http://www.technologyreview.com/Infotech/20164/?nlid=857&a=f
Meet the railgun. Using 10.6 megajoules of energy it propels a seven pound bullet to SEVEN TIMES THE SPEED OF <strike>LIGHT</strike> SOUND. Imagine being hit with that. That's plenty of damage.
Now, meet your new friend, the 32-MJ LRG.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/32-MJ_LRG
Great Britain has one of these puppies. Now, think back to when I said that using 10.6 megajoules of kinetic energy gave us a flying aluminium shell that left a fiery blaze as it went at the amazing speed of SEVEN TIMES THE SPEED OF LIGHT.
Now, Great Britain can kill anyone they want within 220 miles of the installation with THIRTY TWO MEGAJOULES.
And THAT'S overkill, dude.

It's seven times the speed of SOUND. Which is like 500,000 times slower.
Anything going over the speed of light would completely fuck up the laws of physics and would either become a black hole or start traveling back in time. Or both.
