Haunted House, a popular Atari 2600 title is getting a facelift this October. An updated version of the game will be released on the Wii next week and as a downloadable title for XBLA and Windows PCs sometime before Halloween.
Atari is hyping this as the 30th anniversary of Haunted House, even though the game was first released in 1981 and not 1980.

I never liked Haunted House. I couldn't freaking figure it out as a kid.
Gravitar or Combat on my Wii would be fun though.

Haunted House used to freak me out as a kid because I couldn't figure it out. And those fucking eyes, man! THE FUCKING EYES! I just assumed it was unwinnable, as most Atari games were.

Berzerk was fucking awesome. I'd like to see Berzerk reimagined on the Dead Rising engine.

Yeah, I always thought it was unbeatable as well. I could barely advance more than a few stories, and then I'd get freaked out by shit that I couldn't see stalking me. I'm sure I figured at the time that if was just another neverending Atari game...so no way was I going to torture myself by suffering through a million scary levels.
I should look this up, but was there a legit ending? Was there any type of boss 'battle'? Or was it just a victory screen if you managed to escape the Haunted House?
Also, ditto on Bezerk. I played the hell out of that game.

Berzerk was unwinnable, as was the Frenzy conversion cabinet, and the Atari port. The robots and Otto would get faster and faster until they were basically impossible to dodge.
Haunted House was beatable. From Wikipedia:
"The house has three floors and a basement. The player's character may pick up only one of three items at a time (a key to open doors, a sceptre to ward off evil spirits, or the urn) and must avoid a bat, a tarantula, and the ghost of Mr. Graves himself. If the player is hit by the monsters nine times, the game ends. If the player escapes the house with the urn, the player wins."
Dunno if the game starts over after that or what. Ghostbusters on the Atari 2600 was beatable, in the sense that the game ended after you ran ran under the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man and you had to manually reset. Pitfall was beatable on the Atari, in the sense that there was a timer and if you survived until ran down (which was some ridiculous amount of time, 3 hours I think), the game ended. So you could actually "win" simply by not ever moving. How very Zen.

Yeah, I knew Bezerk wasn't beatable, but I would keep track of my high score and compare with my brother.
Riddle of the Sphinx was another Atari game that actually had an ending. One of the few ones that I owned that did. Don't know if anyone was familiar with it, but you were a shirtless dude wandering a desert throwing stones at other guys and scorpions, and you had to constantly watch your 'Thirst' meter. Again, you could actually beat it if you found all the hidden items or whatever, or you could skip finding them and just play on forever, increasing your score. I remember the first time I beat it as a kid...it was the first Atari game I had ever played with an 'ending'. I had no idea what had happened. I actually thought I broke the game.

Oh, man. Riddle of the Sphinx. My grandfather had the cartridge but it was broken. I used to sit there and read the manual and imagine how awesome it must be. When I finally played the game in 1996, I was a little disappointed.

Let me know when they release Air World, and then re-release the rest of Swordquest games... I remember playing those games and having a blast

Wait, WHAT? I need to find this now. Adventure was my crack when I still had an Atari.
