I have no strong feelings either way about the military or about gays, so I have no strong feelings either way about this.

What's the military's stance on "gender reassignment"?

I'm certainly no bleeding heart, but I fail to see what the military has to gain by turning away willing participants.

And also, what's to stop people from lying about their sexual orientation?

I have heard from opponents of the repeal, that they are scared a full blown repeal would cause a "mass exodus" in the military causing all the people that don't support it to quit.
Sounds kinda crazy.

It pisses me off. If we're in war (or more), shouldn't the armed forces be happy to take every able-bodied man and woman willing to join up? I know more than a few guys that want to serve but won't because they know they'll be discharged.
On another note, and correct me if I'm wrong here servicepeople, if a soldier is outed right when war is announced, doesn't the soldier still go off with the rest of his unit?

I would hope the soldier stays attached to his unit!
I'm for DADT if it's a get out of war free card.

The fact they can't ask.
Eh, I dunno about this. I've always felt that DA, DT was well-intentioned yet flawed. I can still see how someone being gay in the trenches might still cause issues for the unit (whether or not it's "right" doesn't matter to me, the fact is, there's still issues), but it's not like they'll be wearing a pink uniform and screwing guys on the battlefield. On the other side, I've never quite understand why gay people feel the need to let everyone know about it. I don't go out of my way to tell people I'm straight.
I say this is gone in 5 years. But I'm not sure the time is now.
Also, why is this a law? I thought since the President was the head of the armed forces, he could take care of stuff like this with an Executive Order.

Yeah, I agree with Usa here really. If you're gay and want to join up, just don't tell the recruiter you're gay. Why does it need to be advertised? If you do want to scream it from the roof tops, then sorry, you can't join the military.
I think DADT exists because they are afraid that repealing it and allowing open gays to join might scare off a lot of other recruits who would be uncomfortable living in such close quarters with a homosexual man, especially if he is extremely open about being gay. It's unfortunate, but there are a lot of people out there who feel that way and I can understand it.

Okay, but what if you are gay and married? I mean, you do get asked about your family status et cetera - they need that kind of information so they know who to contact in case you get blown to pieces on a landmine?
DADT takes it up the ass in a situation like this, since you are being asked and you have to answer.

Marry someone with a gender neutral name like Pat, Sandy, or Brad.

Well, it's not so much sarcasm as it is joking.
But that is a somewhat viable solution. They don't ask you for the gender of your spouse, just the name. The only time the military would ever find out the actual gender of your spouse is when you die and they have to notify your spouse. And by then, DADT is irrelevant.

Well then is that's the case why not have a don't ask don't tell policy for religion too? I mean just don't tell the recruiter you are catholic.

There was a quote from Jon Stewart about this. I don't remember it exactly but it went something like this:
"So, in the name of fighting terrorism, we're ok with torture, preemptive invasion, and suspending habeas corpus but, apparently, allowing openly gay individuals to serve their country is crossing the line."
That about sums it up for me. This law seems ridiculous.

Because being a Christian is "socially acceptable" and being homosexual is not. Even though believing that faith is a total farce.
Being gay probably makes the military feel all the oogily boogilies and they don't want to have to deal with that. So, just don't tell them, and don't go humping Colonel Sanders in broad daylight.
They're just asking soldiers to not be fucking men in public, because those "Gary Busey" type veterans cant be protected against.

As far as I understand it, the law is in place because the higher officers of the military believe people who are homosexuals will distract or be distracted by others of the same sex.
Essentially they think that there are too many intolerant people in the lower ranks of the armed forces.
I actually agree that there are probably a large number of soldiers who are extremely intolerant. However, I think that if they were to ignore sexual orientation completely, this problem would dissolve over time and tolerance would increase.

Yes because gays are sexual deviants who can't keep in their pants in public (I know you are being facetious but still). I honestly think it's disgraceful that people have to just hide who they are for the sake of public opinion.
If they can get through basic training and testing without whipping their dicks then they can manage not to do so in battle.
And seriously people if you don't care about the issue then don't post saying you don't care it's fucking obnoxious. Like going in to a movie and yelling I AM COMPLETELY NEUTRAL AS TO WHETHER THIS MOVIE IS GOOD OR NOT, JUST THOUGHT YOU SHOULD ALL KNOW. Then sitting back down.

You know, I disagree. This is a flash point issue that people have been pretty passionate about. Being apathetic about it is kind of telling, when you think about it - people don't consider this an issue anymore.
Which, honestly, is the way it should be.
