It really doesn't sound like a terrible idea does it? I mean as long as this isn't some mandatory thing and they are actually "in prison".

Makes sense to me. While we're at it, make drug testing mandatory for welfare too.

Here here! Let out nonviolent, non-sex crime related offenders and make use of the space! Ditto too on the drug testing for welfare. If you can't get a job, you shouldn't get to enjoy those kinds of substances on my dollar.

My thing is what about people that are trying to make ends meet but can't afford to do so whether it's a bad job market or if it's a situation where the family just lost a sole provider? This is like saying "you have skills but if you're poor and on welfare well, you have to go to this camp?" What about people that are just laid off and are in the shuffle of finding jobs?
Quote:
Ketny Jean-Francois, a former welfare recipient and a New York City advocate for low-income people, said Paladino's idea shocked her.
"Being poor is not a crime," she said. "People are on welfare for many reasons ... Is he saying people are poor because they don't have any hygiene or any skills?"

You know, I think this is a great idea. The part that makes people squeamish is that they're converting them from prisons, but think about it, prisons are pretty much all set up to take care of people efficiently at state expense. You just remove the bars and open the doors. If they were converting boy scout camps, nobody would bitch. The only part I don't like is "retraining" prison guards into counselors. That's one hell of a job shift, and I don't think it would be an easy transition.

As long as it's clear that it's a voluntary program, I can see this appealing to a lot of people.

And anyone missing the hidden good news here? New York actually has enough space in prisons to make this a viable option? Hey, crime is down!

Why don't we have them create their own cultures like Escape from New York or The Running Man?

Wow, that's pretty dark after thinking about it.

They pretty much already have their own culture in prison.

Actually they shut down a ton of prisons in New York State due to the State's Budget Deficit... All in all, you're just another brick in the wall.
