OTR stands for Original Theatrical Release, if you were unsure.

These days, movies get packed full of extras and their releases get titles like Special Edition or Unrated Director's Cut. As a result, it's getting harder to find the OTRs of some movies.

Case in point: Empire Records. In 2003, a "Fan Remix Edition" of the movie was released on DVD with extra and altered scenes in it. It's interesting, and almost all the classic quotes are still there, but the original version of the film doesn't seem to be available at all anymore.

Don't get me wrong, the director's cuts and special editions of movies tend to be pretty cool (except with Star Wars and the Exorcist), but from a historical standpoint, I feel like the original versions of classic films should be more readily available.

Another example is Terminator 2. First there was the Special Edition, then the Ultimate Edition, then the EXTREME edition. And if they ever reach a deal with Axl Rose, don't think they won't slap the "You Could Be Mine" video on there, retouch the film again, and call it the SUPER MEGA SHOTGUN EDITION!!!

I forget what my original point was. Oh yeah... what are some other films that you can't find the original version of that you'd like to?

Highlander: JVC Logo. Er... Endgame.

Not that there's any reason you'd actually WANT the theatrical cut, though. However, I do have a VCD that's virtually the same, but minus the sex scene. Gawd, that movie's terrible. Confused

Speaking of bad Highlander movies, I don't think they sell the original version of Highlander II anymore, just the Renegade version.

I recently bought the dvd of Team America: World Police because it was on sale for five bucks. However, it's the unrated version, which includes an extra 13 seconds of puppet sex. The scene was funny in the theatrical version, but I just can't find watching puppets piss and shit on each other as funny. I wish I could get the OTR instead, but sadly, that's not possible.

This problem seems to happen mostly with comedies I've noticed, as directors try to get the jokes that were too sick for general audiences onto the dvd release.

Actually, there's an even newer version of Highlander II that's better than the Renegade Version, but still only barely salvages that awful pile of crap. The original cut still exists on VHS, but that's about it.

For that matter, good luck finding ANY of the Highlander movies on DVD in their theatrical versions. The OTR of Highlander III is available in fullscreen only through some Canadian home video release... That's about it.

I've been try to collect all the variations, and I currently I own 8 of the 4 Highlander movies -- and I'm still missing one. Wink

As for Team America, I know the OTR exists on DVD as well -- I've rented it.

Yeah, it's true. TA:WP had a dual release when it first came out, OTR and Unrated. These days, you only seem to be able to get the Unrated unless you go online and specifically look for the OTR. This seems to be true for most movies; the OTR eventually falls to the wayside in favor of the Unrated version.

Speaking of which, I really wish I had bought Anchorman when it first came out. No one carries the dual pack with Anchorman and the alternate cut "Wake Up, Ron Burgundy" anymore.

Well, technically you CAN get the OTR of T2, since it uses a branching technology to edit back in the "Director's Cut" sequences. I think on the Ultimate Edition, you had to put in a code (groan) to get the OTR, but it's there. On the Extreme edition, it's DC by default, but I know the OTR is hidden on there somewhere and I think that souped up .wmv HD file is the OTR. This is one of the few movies that I think I actually prefer the original version of. Stuff like Sarah wanting to smash the CPU is cool, but that dream sequence with Kyle yelling "Get up, soldier" is just fucking terrible.

That because the OTR of Highlander 2 falls under the Geneva Convention. It is inhumane to expose people to it.

Damn it, why am I the only person who loves "Highlander II: Not Planet Zeist"?

Wait, which one do you like? The fixed one(s)? 'Cause yeah, I enjoyed those a whole lot more than the OTR.

Mind you, "a long time ago" wasn't a much better explanation.

Speaking of Highlander, they're making another one, scheduled for release in September 2007:

For some reason, only Duncan's in it. I never saw Endgame, does Connor die? If not, I guess Lambert was too busy making MK3:

He did die, but that doesn't mean he won't come back for other future films.

DarkMaze, I love the Renegade Version. Good cyber-punky-80s style* sci-fi fantasy and Michael Ironside is the SHIT! Cool

Yes, it wasn't an 80s film, but it felt like it.

I also recommend the newest version. It's like the Renegade Version, but it's a little better.

I'm sick of MK3 rumors...Unless they attach a good screenwriter & director to it.

Dude, MK3 sucked. Ultimate was a little better. You should try MK Trilogy, it's like they took MK3 and stuck a bunch more shit to it.

...Oh, wait, are we talking about the movie?
