So. Metroid: Other M hit the shelves today. As with Super Mario Galaxy 2, I asked my mother to reserve a copy this morning from our closest local Blockbuster and it was in my hands within the hour. Does it live up to the hype of the last while or were Nintendo and Team Ninja just jerking us around? Beats the living fuck out of me, because I never got to play it, despite having not one, but two apparent opportunities to do so, emphasis on "apparent"!
My Wii wouldn't read the disc, despite repeated attempts. Being the only one available to take initiative, something I, statistically speaking, should have been doing for years by now, I walked all the way over to Blockbuster, exchanged copies and walked back. So I get home, load the disc and...same thing. Cue trip #2. I get to the store, they don't have any other copies, they can't give my mom's money to me, so they put it in store credit on her account. Then I go home again, empty-handed this time.
There are two bright spots to this, the first being the aforementioned initiative-taking. The second is that I confirmed that my Wii isn't the problem here.

Wait...How is this not your Wii's fault? I remember Brawl causing this problem and it was because the early Wii's have trouble with dual layered discs. The only solution was to send it to Nintendo for repairs.
EDIT: Mine is currently experiencing the same problem. It can't play Brawl, but it can play everything else.

Gunblade NY/LA Machineguns came in the mail today. I haven't been able to play it because I've been dehydrated and lying in bed all day.
For what it's worth, X-Play gave it 2/5. Apparently Samus is a lot more dependent on Adam
s permission to use her upgrades and she also needs to simply stand still for a bit and her missiles refill. Also, the scanning and first person shooting leaves you unable to move. I'm not too keen on needing to switch between pointer and "retro" handling of the Wiimote. Super Paper Mario used it just enough for me.

X-Play sucks. Adam Sessler is an uncharismatic tool with no neck and his cohosts are plastic cutouts lacking any personality, depth, or talent.
As for the game itself, it currently has an aggregate score of 80 on MetaCritic based on 21 professional reviews. That's a little low considering that it's a Nintendo flagship title, but still a solid score.

Current X-Play does suck. Old X-Play from a couple of years ago was awesome. There was some actual humor and more than 1 review an episode. But this was during an awesome year for gaming (RE4 & Halo 3 come to mind first but there were several others.). Also Cheat was a separate show that showed cheats and not just walkthroughs, and it was hosted by a dude and not eye candy.
As for Other M (They seriously went with that title? Oh wait...), I'm not too interested in it. I love me some Metroid, but Nintendo passed the game to Team Ninja, who added too much DoA style stuff to it (I probably worded that wrong, but I think it looks like a cheesy action movie with all of Samus' stunts). Is 2D too much to ask for? I've sat through 2 great and 1 good FPS games waiting for some traditional Metroid action, and they cancel the Fusion Sequel? Bullocks!

I am interested in the game, but after reading what many of you said, I think I'll wait and see how well received it is by the fans before picking it up at full price.

Explain to me how this isn't primarily about Metroid: Other M...
Watched a little of the gameplay yesterday. Looks very pretty, though I can't speak to how it controls. I'm thrilled it's not entirely FPS, which is what turned me off of Metroid Prime. My only gripe is that the uncharacteristically chatty Samus has a weak, expressionless voice. But lousy voice acting is hardly a dealbreaker.

OH WAIT, IT IS.
You evidently didn't see it, but the bracketed addition was originally Metroid Prime. After I made that post, it was changed.

But you are talking about Metroid: Other M, not Prime.
Sooo, did you try cleaning the disc? A little rubbing alcohol and a q-tip goes a long way.

That's why they usually have an option to turn off Voice Volume in the options thankfully. While I hated John Madden I now REALLY hate Chris Collinsworth, but I like the other guy. I guess my point is they should have a Collinsworth silencer.

If his problem is the same as mine, the disc isn't the problem. My Brawl disc is as clean as it can be, yet it still doesn't play. The problem is the laser reader thingy not being strong enough to read both sides or something.

I didn't realize it came out last week. I've been waiting a while to play Gunblade NY again.

Do you guys have your Wiis connected to the internet? Maybe you need a system update...
I think I will pass on other M, as much as I want to play it that Wii remote sucks big time to me. I don't think you can use the classic controller either, as you need to shake the remote or stick it in the air to recharge your health. Sigh...I wish Nintendo (or TN) would let this motion control lay low when it comes to their major titles.

From what I have read and seen it's primarily used by having the wiimote on it's side.

Since I believe it hadn't been mentioned yet it gives me great pleasure to say:
in before Ridley cutscene, BAWW THEY RUINED SAMUS, and x pages of bitching/shitting on the game over that one cutscene.
I wish Nintendo (or TN) would let this motion control lay low when it comes to their major titles.
It wouldn't make much sense for Nintendo to not promote it's hardware's main selling point and big releases are the ideal place to do it, however I do wish the same thing.
