In light of the "change your avatar size" thread.
May i inquire as to why there is no option to upload files from your computer?
I have loads of images i would have liked to use but i just can't find them online to link to them.
I was actually surprised there isn't an option. Is it just problematic or does it require space or something?

well, you could use imageshack, or photobucket, or really anything that lets you do direct links. It's what I use for my sigs (Well, i don't have one right now, but it's what I used to use)

While I can't speak directly for Syd, I can imagine it is to prevent large amounts of images from taking up space and bandwidth on his server.

In the other avatar thread I referenced 3 image hosts that would be happy to store your images for you.

They don't work on my PS3, so I guess you guys will have to put up with my slightly over the limit avatar.

Well there's always the option of politely asking someone to re-size and host the image for you...?

In the early days, I had limited bandwith and server space and I was concerned about hitting my limit on both. My allowed bandwith and server space have gone up every month since I started the site to the point where I get unlimited space and bandwith.
I will open up the site to avatar uploads as soon as we have a reasonable answer to this question: what should be the size limit (in KB) for avatar uploads? I know some of you like to use elaborate animated GIFs, and I do not want to begrudge you the right to do so.
Once avatar uploads are established, they will eventually shift towards mandatory. This will prevent people from using avatars that are over 100 x 100 pixels at all. The software, unfortunately cannot check image size or disk size on offsite avatars.

Syd,
Here are a few examples of animated images that are within the resolution limits. I have listed their file sizes under the image so you can get an idea as to how big they are for download size.
I would say that 40KB is enough to do what you need to do, however, it would require that many people learn how to reduce their avatar image size using editing tools.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
149.49 KB
808.86 KB
143.94 KB
1KB
(Props to you Knyte... very efficient)
1.38 KB
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just for an example of how over bloated some animations can be:
Linky's Avatar is 809KB
I ran it through Adobe Fireworks and optimized it for 150KB
I super tweaked it in Adobe Fireworks and optimized it for below 40KB
Does it look as good at 40KB as it does at 809? Fuck no... but it is 1/20 the size and still equally represents Linky.

True...Anybody want to give me a hand here?
EDIT: Nevermind. If someone could crop Todd Ingram (Guy fipping the bird) from this image, resize it, and flip it vertically, I'd be quite grateful.

I got the error message "The file at the URL you gave contains no data". Is PNG not supported?

My avatar is a PNG, it worked fine.
Save to your desktop then upload it.

You know i never actually considered just uploading them to an image hosting site and doing it from there.
Usually i have very little luck with photobucket in it actually uploading for me, i.e. uploading fails with everything!
Though if there is now an option even better!

Speaking of avatars, does anyone know how the fuck PHPbb decided to sort avatars in a gallery? They used to be sorted in the order they were uploaded in, but now they're not and it's seriously pissing me off.

Sorry Syd, no clue.
You can probably create multiple categories though to divide up the avatars.

I just want the one gallery. Can you look into it? I've been playing around for almost 3 hours trying to fix the avatar order and I've made no headway whatsoever. I don't see myself getting anything else done in regards to the site until I resolve this.
One thing I've noticed: even if I create a new gallery and reupload the avatars one by one, the new gallery still has the same order as the previous one. It's not alphabetical. It's not by filesize. It doesn't make any sense and it's freaking me out.

Syd, there is virtually no documentation about PHPBB2.0. I have no idea how it stores them. Lets chat tomorrow or later tonight and see what we can come up with.
