Your damn avatar is too fucking big.
This seems to be a very common issue, so this is a common thread. It isn't targeted at any one person, but every time that one of you decides to make an avatar image that is larger than 100px x 100px we can all bitch about it and offer fixes or suggestions here.
I was thinking about PMs, but lets be honest, you deserve to be shamed, in this case however you aren't worthy of a thread of your own.
You don't need to understand why the pixel limit is 100x100, but you might want to have the tools on deck to fix this when you pick your next avatar. So here are a few programs that might help you out, they are all free so you have no fucking excuses.
ONLINE TOOLS:
1. http://www.online-image-editor.com/ - Tackle those animated gif reductions. Can reduce or crop. I really like the simplicity of this tool and the fact that it can use online images. No downloading required!
2. http://www.gifexplode.com/ - grab a frame from an animated GIF as your avatar.
3. http://www.pixlr.com/editor/ - Flash based image editor with decent functionality.
DOWNLOADABLE TOOLS:
1. http://picasa.google.com/ - Image sorting and very basic editing.
2. http://www.irfanview.com/ - Image viewer and resizer.
3. http://www.gimp.org/ - Wicked overkill for avatars, but it can do everything that Photoshop can... except that no one knows how to use it to do those things.
IMAGE HOSTING:
1. http://imgur.com/ - Free, Fast, and Reddit approved
2. http://imageshack.us/ - Free, Slow, Bulky, well known
3. http://photobucket.com/ - Why the fuck does anyone use this site? Half of the images I see are from it, but it sucks balls. Use one of the other options.

Irfanview is a nice free image resizer with lots of other great options.

What if it's like 113 by 120? Mine doesn't seem to be so offensive.

I appreciate this thread, it's really annoying for the board brackets to be malformed for a while until the autoresize on the site kicks in for me. I always make my avatars 100x100 by default, so I've been good for quite some time methinks unless I'm using a shitty avi...

I just fiddle around with stretch / skew in ms paint until I get it right.

If it is more than 100x100 then it forces the image resizing script, so changing it would be appreciated.

yeah the screen jumps around when it's resizing and it's kind of annoying.

There we go.
Though if it's too small does it have to resize it up?

MS Paint doesn't always do the best job. Irfanview generally preserves the integrity of the image better.

XnView and its shell extension do a much better job than IrfanView. The shell extension in particular gives right-click functionality for images and allows you to resize and convert images in a hurry while preserving aspect ratio. Paint.NET is a highly recommended alternative to MS Paint for general image editing.

Nope, there is no avatar that is too small. Though if one expects to be represented by an image, it should be visible, so most likely anything less than 10x10 would be nearly useless as an avatar.

So, as it turns out, my avatar was 132x132
Figured I should change it for a more personal one anyways (also, Soldier Hawk was trashing animated avatars :/)
It still has zombies tho

This is a perfect example of using Nearest Neighbor as the algorithm for resizing in order to preserve hard edges and avoid blurring between pixels.

Maybe we could just update the forum software and force them to only upload or link to images that are 100x100 or less... |
That doesn't work. Hence, the forced resize. Now that I have unlimited bandwith, I could make avatars be "upload only".

If they are upload only, is there a size check?
Also, does the upload option know about PNG files...

1) Yes. I can make it whatever I want. Default is 12 KB.
2) Yes. The site's gallery is almost entirely PNG files and the software recognizes them.
