A character's ethnic background doesn't need a reason. A character can be of Chinese and Irish descent without it being crucial the story. If you draw a character of some ethnic heritage, that heritage is at least partially clear by the way they're rendered. Ethnicity is an aesthetic; no further explanation is needed. But in video games, being gay is fairly meaingless. What would it mean for Mario to be gay? Nothing, really. His relationship with Peach is almost entirely asexual to begin with, so for Mario to be gay doesn't change the narrative at all. But there's also no opportunity to introduce Mario's gayness into the storyline as it would never be relevant since his love life is never explored. You could have a gay Mortal Kombat character too. We'll retcon Reptile to be gay. And again, it neither adds nor detracts from the game.

Or how about this: Sonic is gay! That actually adds to the narrative. That's why Sonic's not interested in Amy, and why his best friend is a prepubescent boy. No wonder Sega and Michael Jackson got a long so well...

Bottom line is this: if there's room in a narrative for a game to explore a character's love life, there's room for that character to be gay. If the narrative never gets that personal, then there's not.

That makes perfect sense to me. Well-reasoned, sir.

Maybe he just means in the games where they do show romance, it's always a main character out to save the girl. Hardly the other way around, and hardly for the main character out to save another guy.

I don't think it'd sell as well, it's not as relatable.. I think those are the primary reasons you don't see it.

You know Link from Zelda is totally gay. It's obvious from the way he dresses, but that never stopped anyone from playing it. So who cares right? In all seriousness, unless the sexuality is the theme of the game, it's completely irrelevant (or at least it should be). Seriously, who would stop playing Zelda if they suddenly found out Link 'came out'.

Fox is more gay than Falco, Falco crushed Kat too much and has a lot of history with her.

I will still main Fox in Smash Melee over Falco though.

I don't understand how they "need" more gay? Were they being discriminated against in the past? I feel that it's always been just no one ever putting gay people in games, not a blackballing collusion to break up the "Focus on the Family".

I don't need anyone telling me that something "needs" gay people in it if there isn't an active or subconscious discrimination against it.

Well, no matter how the gaming world turns out. At least they have that going for them, hell I don't know any straight people who can.

Didn't see this comment before, but now that I have I did want to offer a little additional context; this is one of many episodes in his "Needs More Gay" series, in which he talks about various elements of pop culture as it represents homosexuality. Some of these areas-- like his recent video on "Disco Camp" movies-- are certainly not lacking for gayness. It's just a title for his overall series, though I understand how it might come across as trying to ram something down your throat.
