I have really been in a Mario music mood lately and was thinking to myself which game had the superior soundtrack.
I figured I would bring the question to my fellow Sydlexians. I only included SMB1-64 because the Sunshine soundtrack was pretty weak IMO as most tunes from that game sound very similar, and the Galaxy titles have full orchestras. So only 80's and 90's Mario titles.
Anyways, I love all this music so it's a hard choice for me, after a bunch of listening I whittled it down to either SMB3 or SMW, with SMW taking the cake by a slight margin.
The soundtrack in SMW is so eclectic and builds upon the foundation created in SMB3. I also really love the 64 soundtrack so this was a tough choice.
EDIT: Had to restart the poll real quick because I forgot to add "64" initially, vote again. sorry!
Sorry, Syd. I suppose I should have included it...I thought there were a few OK tunes on there, but you really think that it was the best of all time? Come on.
The original is so recognizable and brings waves of nostalgia, so it definitely ranks up there.
Mario World did nothing for me at all. I think it was the worst of the bunch.
Honestly, I own it and I still can't remember Mario Sunshine. That game was so pathetic that I couldn't spend more than 10 minutes before I shut it off and put it away forever.
I think the newest games have received a lot of love and both Galaxy & Galaxy 2 have great tunes.

I always liked the first level music of Super Mario Land, but that's neither here nor there.
Shake it, Quake it, Space Kaboom.

I really liked the Super Mario Land music as well. Very different.
Oh man I forgot about the airship theme from 3....geeze.
I think I'd have to go with World though. There's not one annoying or bad piece of music in the game. (Admittedly I'm a bit biased because World is my favorite Mario game, but...)

The airship theme from SMB3 reminds me of the opening part of "Am I Evil", as made famous by Metallica.
Neither of them really stand out as soundtrack of the year.
I actually played Super Mario Land for the time in ages a couple of weeks ago and I had completely forgotten how awesome the soundtrack was. If that game was on this list I'd pick that one.
But for the sake of argument, I'll go with 3.

Super Mario World... yeah. Super Mario 64 is so close though...
I've always liked this one a lot. There is a bad-ass metal remix of it, but I couldn't find it online anymore...

Yea, Hexen one of the best Mario themes ever.
I am currently working on a piano rendition of it.
By the way, here is a fantastic metal version, Powerglove is awesome. They switch over the Castle theme like mid-way through.
