There are games that are undeniable classics. Link to the Past, FFVII, Bubsy...
But are there things about these games you can't stand? Or are there any "classics" that you despise?
I'll start. Ocarina of Time just bores me now. Maybe that's the cynic in me, but I hate the intro and the bosses are way too easy.

I hate that most games made before 1985 don't have endings or continues. Play until you die, then you're done. Bah to that.

I hate arcade games designed to milk you for quarters. A lot of older games seemed like that.
A lot of typical classics really don't appeal to me much.

Yeah, most arcade beat 'em ups and light gun games aren't designed to be won on a single credit. They're designed to milk money out of you until you win or give up.

I'm pretty sure I'm gonna draw a lot of aggro for this, but...
I hate sonic. All of them. Always have. Sorry.

Well, I have played Sonic 1, 2 and 3 and the GBA ones, and it just seems like it's more of a memory exercise than a platformer.Because of the game's pace, you have to already know what's going to come your way to survive, being "good" doesn't help you as much as it should. It's not a matter of difficulty, it's more like unfairness. A game can have you running over the same stage 20 times like DKC 3 and still be fair, even if a bit tough.

I hate the original Link to the Past because I don't know where I'm supposed to go without a guide. Could they at least have numbered the dungeons on the map?
The Medal of Honor games. It's like the developers looked at all of the praise for large-scale, intense firefights and impressive set-pieces, and decided "Bullshit, people want more long, boring sniper-town missions."
Halo. Bungie has a bigger budget than heaven, yet they decide to release the same damned game over and over. I think people wouldn't mind a retcon if it meant more than three architectural styles.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind. |

Some are far worse than others. I remember beating Tekken 3 at Disneyworld for a quarter using nothing but Paul's Phoenix Smasher. Eat that Ogre, you cheating son of a bitch!

At the end of the day, every old school platformers comes down to muscle memory. There's very little randomness in say, SMB1. Enemies appear at the same starting locations every time and move in the same directions at the same intervals. As a result, it is possible to play through SMB1 the exact same way every time if you desire. The underwater levels might be an exception. I'm not sure. I usually skip them.

Yea, also, if you are trying to get Super/Hyper Sonic, it adds more difficulty to the game. Chaos Emeralds are awesome.

Chocobos were pretty cool when they first hit the scene. They were fun and useful in FFVI.

No reasonable way to continue or save your progress. I think it was 1941 that only gave you one guy and no continues(I could be wrong).

I think it's safe to call GTA III a classic by now, so, what I hate: Portland, the first district becomes nigh-impossible to navigate after a certain mission, because ALL the gangs hate you: the Mafia (controls the largest territory - Saint Marks, Red Light District, parts of Downtown), Triads, hell, even the Diablos want a piece of you. Worst of all, those italian bastards carry shotguns (two shotgun hits to any vehicle - instant explosion).
So, until you get that bulletproof Patriot from Ray Machowski later on (and even then, if you lose it, you're fucked), you can forget about doing anything there - and it's the easiest district to navigate for vehicle missions, which you are forced to do before the last mission to raise the required five hundred thousand dollars.
So, yeah.

I dislike how narrow most games defined the options for play control.
I have always had a hard time with older platformers such as Castlevania and SMB. As the games have grown and offer more options, I have found them to be more fun for players with less skill, such as myself.

One hit kill games. Fuck you Contra III. You may be fun as hell and super addictive, but no macho man on Earth takes a single goddamn hit.
Wait, not true. Forgot about Kimbo Slice.

I remember that whatever capcom classics disc that had the arcade version of Bionic Commando had a blurb about how it was designed as a quarter vacuum and it was impossible to beat so they automatically gave you unlimited credits. I remember dying as soon as the 2 seconds of flashing invincibility after respawning was over in the later levels. So fucking impossible.

I remember playing through it and man, oh man is it a far cry from the NES/360 versions.
Credit count on that game? About 50.

Passwords. |
To be specific with this one, long-ass passwords that took half a page to write down and turns out you mistyped ONE letter, thus not only realizing that you wasted 5 minutes writing the password altogether, but also wasted hours of gameplay for that matter, forcing you to start again...
I'm looking at you, River City Ransom!!!

Nothing? I thought the ending was rather poignant.
