And Burt, it's more to do with the culture of the ghettos and as a result, the Black culture that puts pressure on their young people to be at odds with society. I heard an interview once with Charles S. Dutton the actor where he said as a young black male, you're not considered a man by the culture until you've spent some time in prison. Culture does play into it... but ghettos were created specifically to house black people to keep them segregated from white communities... Of course now, black people are allowed to live wherever they choose, but it's insanely difficult for people especially those who have lived there for generations to escape. In a sense you are correct as gangs developed as a means for survival and by the time blacks were allowed to live in white neighborhoods, the culture had already been established and from childhood children from the ghetto are taught that way of life, and really, forced into it in order to make it... I mean, how many of us have graduated to a higher economic class than our parents.? Most middle class remain middle class because the opportunity to gain wealth is lower than that of an upper class child who has the financial resources to go to better colleges invest in riskier business ventures without going into ruins.. etc etc.. its the same thing for lower class...

Then discrimination, racism or whatever aside, poorer citizens are much less likely to be able to afford a good attorney when on trial, increasing the likelyhood that they will receive a longer jail sentence.. and the fact they are more likely to get caught committing a crime because their areas have a higher concentration of law enforcement.

Also, I get really frustrated with my writing limitations.. I feel like I can't eloquently state what I'm thinking sometimes... so I hope what i said makes sense.

yes, ignorance breeds ignorance... I'm not saying they literally don't have an opportunity, but if your parents aren't educated, there is a good chance you wont be very well educated either... im saying that the problem started long ago and it's a cycle that is very difficult to break. As far as the new jordan's thing goes... I think that is our culture in general... How many people think they NEED cable and a Cell phone... people did just fine without it forever yet we think all these luxuries are necessities and overlook the things that we REALLY need, like a balanced diet.

Also, I know I sound like a bleeding heart right now, but I'm really not.. Sure people can leave the ghetto... I'm just saying that A LOT of people from all walks of life aren't motivated for drastic change, it's just that people in the ghetto were dealt a shittier hand, and human nature dictates that black white brown or whatever, most are not going to rise above their situation... that's why they make movies about such things, because most humans don't do it.
