| As for you pack a day... DAMN!!! I know it's a lot of work but it might be worth a longer life. Get the gum and the patch.. .give your brain the nicotine it needs and just ween yourself off it. Ran a mile 3 times a week, a mile, and tried to get under like 13 minutes... You already know all this stuff and dieting stuff, but might be worth it for you someday. It's hard to quit smoking cold turkey, i'd definitely recommend the patch/gum. |

are you saying this from experience or just being a self righteous asshole? because if you havent smoked, and im talking at least a pack a day for a year or two, you have no goddamn idea how hard it is to quit. at my worst in college and shortly after, i was at three packs a day. ive cut down to the point where its just about a pack per, but still, its hard. i have one and i want another before its even in the ashtray.
as for people vs. food, i decided to do the gameworks challenge and get the one pound burger that they serve. if you eat it within an hour, its a ten dollar game card, which averages the meal out to about 0 dollars. catch is, just the patties are a pound, and the extra fixins are easily about another half pound, plus you have to eat the fries. i did it in half an hour with my then-fiance-now-wife watching and making slightly disgusted faces. and the kicker? i ordered it with bacon and was bombing blue moon 22 drafts the whole time. ta-kow!

Call me crazy, but I think that little pep talk from Jonny Boy will be the kick in the ass FNJ has been waiting for all these years. Be sure to post some before and after pics, FNJ.

You're a classy guy Aeonic.
Also, I could never understand how people can smoke 3 packs a day; that's a new cig every 15 minutes. You must just be constantly lighting them.
I'm not a smoker myself, but my wife is and I found that if you want to cut down, it's best to force yourself to go outside to smoke rather than doing it in the house. If you have to get up every time you want a cig, pure laziness cuts your consumption in half.

Also, it's hard to smoke when you are running, so if you do it all at once you get synergy bonuses!!
Srsly though, don't take up running, at least not right away. It screws up the knees, specially if you're as heavy as me, for example (123 Kg, which translates to about 270 lbs).

i am classy.
with the three packs thing, you have to realize that i had a lot of energy that wasnt necessarily all natural. at some points i would have two seperate cigarettes lit and just alternate between the two of them while smoking. those days alone helped me really do a number on myself.
as for the whole going outside thing, i'd argue that mainly because that's my situation. so when I'm at work, every break i have two or three (100's, not shorts) and once Im home i find just about any excuse to go outside (walk the dog, take the trash out, etc) so i can have another. im actually thinking that i would do it less if I could inside because my wife would bitch constantly about it.

Damn you, Jew! I get hungry everytime I read this thread. If I wasn't flat broke, this would cause me to have a setback on my reduced portion, healthy(er) food diet. I would commit a class A felony right now if I could go buffet bustin'.

seriously, dont they have like a blood plasma donation place near you? all the hobos and druggies go to get cash at those places. a little time and youre walking out with 10-20 bucks, and thats more than enough for like hungry howies (even though their pizza tastes like what Divine eats at the end of Pink Flamingos) or peter piper or some shit, yeah?

sure. We'll have a montage, then in the fourth round of the forum battle, dolph lungdren will beat him to death. I'll have to grow my beard back out and go to Russia to train some more and then destroy communism with my bare hands in his memory.

I really don't follow, I think we can make a pretty solid argument in the case for a healthy life, in just how you feel at any given moment of the day, what your options are, and just overall longevity. I think we can also make the case for just doing whatever pleasure now type mentalilty.
I realize it's hard to quit smoking which I why i would recommend weening. Maybe if you're at a pack a day, you spread half a pack throughout the day instead. Just time, and smoke on that schedule so half a pack is gone by the end of the day. Do this for 2 weeks, and go from there. Use the patch and gum to aid you. I never said he had to do it, it's his life, his choice,,, I'm sure he's heard it before I think encourgement, (maybe even a partner going through the same thing is key to success... someone hanging out with you all day, also trying to quit, and offering you that enouragement. Not bitching, but encouragement. That coupled with a weening process. Satisfy the urge to the point where you can overcome it via will power, and simultaneously you'll reduce your bodies urge overall. It can actually be unhealthy to quit cold turkey send your body into shock. I think excersice would also be a helpful distraction.
If you want to take this negatively feel free, I can't to stop you, but it's not meant that way.

Probably do. But I don't have anyone to watch my kid. If I wait until my wife is home and she knew I was gonna give plasma so I could go Hasselhoffing, you'd never hear from me again.

im not going to try and turn this into a flamewar or anything, although i think its pretty clear by now that im not a fan, jonsnow. get the gum and the patch... just ween yourself off of it... run a mile three times a week. nothing in any of those statements indicated whatsoever you were merely 'suggesting' it. those are commands or imperatives, and if i was talking about what i was doing and you used that phraseology, id be pissed. maybe that's what provoked my 'taking it negatively'.
but let's be honest: other than maybe having seen someone else do it, what the fuck do you know about how hard it is to quit? i've tried gum, patches, and even hypnotherapy. ive been smoking for 17 years, almost going on 18 and ill be 29 this year. tell you what. pick up a carton of camel unfiltereds on the way home, smoke them all for the next couple weeks, and then get some nicorette and let me know how great a replacement it is. otherwise, your argument has zero weight to it.
and let's be honest while you're at it. you know that increased longevity that you get when you're healthy? where do the years of it come into play? at the end of your life, when everything else poisonous in the world has already turned you into a shriveled, doddering shit sack.

There are old people who've kept active and are able to maintain mobility, into their 80's adn 90's. There's countless examples of this. Perhaps that's all genetic you say, but i think there's a solid case for it being that they kept active each day., walking a mile... or whatever was apart of their routine that kept their body going and healthy, didn't have their bones and muscle deteriorate. (And as long as i can play an mmo, or magic on a computer it'd be worth it to exist while i'm 90.)
I'm not physical specimen myself, and i realize how hard it is to break habits (your daily norms), as well as break addictions and they're two seperate difficult hurtles.

Smoking and health talks aside, I am pretty lightweight when it comes to eating a lot. My only real goal in eating is to reduce the cost of pizza below a dollar a slice by eating enough. From time to time I can pull out some FNJ-like food rage, however. I sometimes can eat an entire pizza.

Yeah, I don't normally sit down and eat that much, but sometimes it's fun to do stuff just for the sake of amusement and a free t shirt.
My friend and I were toying with the idea of filming a training montage and then going back and trying it again, but it'll have to wait till I get my computer back.

Very true, my new apartment is no smoking, and a pack lasts me a lot longer than it used to.

I can't imagine what the level of addiction must be like if you smoke 3 packs a day and started when you were 11 (Well I kinda can, it's like my caffeine addiction), but unless you were already hooked at that young an age when your body was still developing, quitting shouldn't be that hard. Things like quitting smoking and losing weight cold turkey are really, really easy. It's all been drilled into your head since fucking kindergarten, so you just do what you know you're supposed to. The caveat? It only works if you REALLY want to.
I'm a fat guy. I love all types of food, and I normally eat large meals cause I want some of everything. But I'm losing weight right now. I'm not trying to lose weight, I'm just doing it. There's no temptation to drive out to McDonalds at 2 am, no chewing twelve packs of gum a day to give my mouth something to do (Although I should since my mouth tastes frequently tastes stale now without having been stuffed with food), I'm just eating better and exercising. And aeonic, like I said, I understand your situation is different, but mad props on going from 3 packs a day to 1. Since you still smoke I'm sure it's tough, but the extra $6k a year or so (depending on taxes where you live) must be nice. It's like getting a raise!

thanks jeebus. i mainly scaled back so much because i quit some other things at the same time, and when your heart isn't pumping like a jackhammer and you're not awake for three or four days at a time anymore, its easier to have a few less. im actually planning on scaling back to around half a pack today because of a recent scare. i found these little runnels that were like painful scar tissue at the back of my tongue and thought 'oh shit, tumors' and freaked out last night. then this morning i realized they're spots where my false teeth rub up against the back of my tongue. they're more sore now because i heated up a paperclip with a lighter and cauterized them but that should heal up soon enough and they'll be a lot smaller and tougher so they dont get agitated by my teeth.
