Uh, I don't know if you're high or something, but the movie scene is way better than the novelization you just described. |
Yea, although it may be convenient for Guinness, I think it plays out better with the themes of the films having Obi Wan sacrifice himself rather than falling in combat.
It demonstrates the selfless properties that a Jedi is supposed to embody.

So sue me for wanting to see a fucking lightsaber duel in a Star Wars movie.
I guess if he were defeated, it wouldn't really make much sense with the "if you strike me down.." line. So he's like screw this, I'll save my energy and just become more powerful real quick like.
Also, it's a fucking fairy tale. Don't take it so seriously.

I got into an argument about this just today. I was on a message board where somebody asked who would win Jedi & Sith vs X-Men and the Avengers. Of course everyone was saying X-Men/Avengers. I said Star Wars and based my reasoning on post-Vong Luke Skywalker.
I was told only canon counts. I said it was canon. They said it shouldn't be, that only material by Lucas should be canon. So I told them they could only use X-men written by Stan Lee based on that. We went back and forth for a while before they finally left.

Question. I watched the original Jabba scene with the fat Irish guy. Was it always intended to be replaced with the Jabba we know, or was he originally intended to be human?

That sentence is true in a sort of wibbly wobbly, timey wimey way. Lucas has given somewhat contradictory statements regarding the canonical nature of the EU. However there has been one common thread with his replies is that the movies are one universe and the EU is another.
Now the timey wimey part of it is that he has referred back to the occasional thing from novels and the like taking place between movies, though these may just be fan service. A further support of him taking Star wars and Eu as separate is him disregarding stories taking place after episode six. Which would mean that if he for some reason decides to make episodes 7,8, and 9 (he won't) or if that tv show ever gets off the ground (not likely) then it would likely contradict the stories told.
Of course since it is very likely that Lucas won't make further Star Wars properties it doesn't actually matter what Lucas himself thinks. And infact according to the people behind keeping track of canon over at Lucas (the company not the person) have stated what syd has, that the traditional canon (called the G-canon in the star wars canon holocron) is within one canon universe with the EU canon (called the C-canon).
Tl:dr version, Syd is right but so could be someone saying otherwise. If you want to believe boba made it out of the sarlacc fine, and if not it's also fine. Really the point is I have too much free time and read too many interviews and online encyclopedias.

Everyone knows deep down that lightsaber duels were not that cool to watch until the new trilogy.

Personally I love the original lightsaber duels, in the new movies they're a lot more "GRAH CGI JUMP SLASHES!!!" when in the original they were a lot more psychological, like with the duel at Cloud City when Vader's just toying with Luke.

I disagree. The newer lightsaber duel's were cartoony and stupid. Not to say they were not sort of fun to watch, but it's also like comparing a real samurai and the karate teacher at the Y.

IMO the lightsaber duels between Luke and Darth were the best ones. But I enjoyed the ones in the new films as well.

I Agree completely.
I genuinely get bored with watching people fucking flip around everywhere and do all this ridiculous shit in a fight. Real Samurai battles for example, were decided in 2 or 3 moves. I find that infinitely more exciting in comparison to the what now seems compulsory on-the-wire moonsault over here, Liu Kang Bicycle kick over there style. The older saber duels had so much more attitude, more atmosphere. You really were on the edge of your seat, watching these two motherfuckers pace and consider their next attack. So much more gritty and real than all the ludicrous fuckin' space ballet. I will watch Korean kung fu movies if I want to watch people fly around and not hit eachother for 2 hours.

Not sure if I'm getting your message here, but as far as I remember, I read that a Jedi HAS to sacrifice himself in order to become a Force Ghost. However, this is proven wrong if you consider the fact that Qui-Gon died fighting Darth Maul. So now I'm just confusing myself.

Qui-Gon was never a force ghost though, as far as I know. I've never read any of the books or anything.
And what about Yoda?

Did Darth sacrifice himself by not leaving the Death Star with Luke? Or was it already too late?

Qui-Gon was indeed a Force Ghost, even though you never saw him. In the Third movie, Yoda says that he's been talking to Obi-Wans former master, which is Qui-Gon. This... well, I guess implies he's a force ghost, but I think we can draw the conclusion that he is. And if I remember right, Yoda is indeed a Force Ghost. It's been a long time since I saw the last movie, though. So I'm not sure.

Yoda does become a force ghost...but he didn't sacrifice himself. He was on Dagobah for years until he died of old age. So I wonder why he got that status if you have to sacrifice yourself.
Damn it, we need Tardis.

Agreed.

I think Darth left the Death Star in some way. Or Luke ended up stripping him. Because all I remember is Darth's armor being burned.

I simply meant did grabbing the emperor and getting defeated by Luke kill Vader, or did he sacrifice himself by refusing to go with Luke. Because if he was defeated it wouldn't make sense that his ghost is shown at the end of RoTJ.
