I have. You won't be able to talk clearly for a while at some point after the procedure. Personally, I wanted to die and didn't shave for days, but I recovered. Just tough it out.

Yep, been there too. Here's what you need to do: stock up on Ensure (or an equivalent meal replacement drink), ice cream and yogurt. You'll be living on that (especially the meal replacement drink) for three or four days. Also, I dunno if you're going under for the procedure (I had to), but if you are, make sure you have a good and comfortable place to sleep off the anesthesia. And drink a LOT of water--like even when you're not thirsty. Avoid carbonated drinks at least for the first couple days; they tend to hurt. OH, and make SURE you have straws--preferably the bendy kind. It's kind of hard to open your mouth at first, and the straws are a lifesaver both for water and the Ensure.

Honestly, it hurts, but its not all that bad. The real pain happens while your mouth is still deadened. So it might ache a while, but its nothing horrible. I recommend Advil or Tylenol for pain (AVOID Asprin; it'll keep you bleeding longer than you need to be.) Also make sure you have a shit ton of tissues and washcloths on standby, as well as a BUNCH of gauze from your dentist. (You'll need to keep it packed in the tooth cavities, and they'll bleed for a while and you'll need to change them out.) Make sure you have ice packs handy too, to keep the swelling down.

Hope that helps! And good luck!

yep i grew 2 in on my left side ten years ago. I just had extractions and it was no biggy. My dentist hooked it up with a bunch of vicoden so i was good throughout the duration of the more "intense" pain. Now ten years later my teeth on the right are growing in, and at retarded angles, so I will probably have to get oral surgery, which will be new to me. If you are an adult male.. aspirin, ibuprofin and all that other OTC jazz WILL NOT HELP. Make sure your doctor gives you vicoden man..

Meh, you get some sweet painkillers after an extraction, I recommend stocking up on ice cream and Godzilla movies.

If you're a smoker, don't fucking smoke, also, don't fucking smoke, Dry socket is a motherfucker.

"Patients are also advised to avoid drinking through a straw as the negative pressure created by drawing liquids through the straw can dislodge the clot. Additionally, patients may be told not to spit out saliva (or anything else for that matter) excessively due to the negative pressure created in the mouth immediately prior to spitting. Maintaining good oral hygiene during the healing period by brushing all non-tender areas regularly and rinsing with warm salt water is often advised, beginning 24 hours after the extraction."

God, such a barbaric procedure. I was lucky enough to never have any wisdom teeth come in, so I will never know the oral pain that comes with it.

don't count all your chickens before they've hatched. This last pair I got, I was told I didn't even have 10 years ago when the last ones grew in. I'm almost 30 and these suckers totally surprised me. Hope you don't get em, but I'm just saying it's not uncommon for them to pop up in your 30's.

My wisdom teeth came in when I was about 14. For years I was told by dentists and orthodontists that they were fine and I should just keep them since they were fully exposed.

Right before I turned 27 I had a scheduled dentists appointment. That morning on my drive into work, one of my wisdom teeth broke in half. I wasn't doing anything, it just fell apart. Turns out that because it was so far back in my mouth, I couldn't brush the back side of it. It rotted out and disintegrated.

At that point I was told to have them all removed. So I did.

The doctor gave me the choice and I opted to go under anesthesia during the procedure. I woke up and within one hour felt fine. I ate within two hours. Beyond some general soreness and extra cleaning that goes with having four holes in your mouth I had no problems. I was given Vicodin which I took the first night at the doctor's suggestion. For me, it didn't do anything more than Advil, which was all I needed.

Now the rest of my mouth actually feels better and my teeth shifted into better positioning. I get less canker sores. My teeth are easier to brush. I can floss now because my teeth aren't crammed together.

In many ways getting your wisdom teeth removed is like being stung by a bee. There is some immediate pain, some residual pain, but at the end of the day you heal up just fine and go on your way. However, some people, a small population, are not so lucky and they have terrible reactions.

Just wait till you get old and have all of em yanked, I went through that in my early 20s due to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dentinogenesis_imperfecta , and it sucked.

Wow, and I thought I had it bad cause I had 5 wisdom teeth.
It was kind of funny finding out about it, the dentist just said "oh lookie here an extra wisdom tooth!" and I said "hmmm... yay?" and then he said "yeah we're gonna pull that one out too".
Then, an hour into the proceedure he started complaining about losing his favorite soap opera. "Gwo Fwuch Ywoushelf" was my answer (I had gauze stuffing my mouth)
Good times

I had all four yanked out, they froze my gums and it didn't hurt it just felt and sounded really weird. I didn't have that much pain afterwards but I had to keep the gauz in my mouth for a while and it was a pretty liquid diet. I had milkshakes and protein shakes, drinking was just so much easier than eating.

I only had to use my painkillers a few times before bed because my gums started to hurt when I'd lie down. I had them done on a friday afternoon, went to a hockey game and then a party after. From what I've heard though, the pain levels are different for everyone, here's hoping you get it relativley easy!

They yanked all 4 of mine in bootcamp. Best 3 days of my bootcamp experience. I didn't have to run, get yelled at, or march anywhere. Instead my drill instructors were bringing ME food.

I wasn't put under for mine, probably because its cheaper to just give local's instead. Sucked for me because I ended up getting 13 fucking shots in the mouth to completely numb it.

Being awake during the procedure was weird, I could feel "pressure" as he pulled on them, then suddenly a pop, and I could feel warm liquid hitting the back of my throat (blood). But no pain at all.

They gave my a 3 days supply of Vicoden, after that, I was on my own, back out running, marching, and getting screamed at again.

They will give you something to clean out the sockets, which doesn't feel great, but really decreases the chance of dry sockets or infection. I actually didn't have a bad experience with it. After the procedure I took some Tylenol with Codine (yikes, spelling) and that was it.

The dentist all gave me a pill to calm me down before the procedure which was pretty funny. I literally did not care at all (and I was nervous before). So, if they will give you one of those, do that!

Don't do like me and forget your anti-swelling pills 400km away from where you are, unless you don't care not being able to close your mouth without biting your cheeks for 3 days.

Pulled or cut? Had all four surgically taken out at once. Didn't even take the pain meds and ended up selling them to a friend...the whole thing was an over statement since I never felt an ounce of pain and wasn't even sedated that badly. Don't worry about anything...the one thing I recommend is getting the IV even if it is the most expensive. Any time surgery is done, I feel getting put under is always the best.

i had all four of mine pulled out the same day. and i was lucky, mostly because the oral surgeon doesnt visit this dentists office often.

the 2 on my right side were growing into my jawbone, which was giving me constant migraine headaches and made my right leg ache. the pain was that bad, that my right leg was going numb. so, the doctor pulled them out. and he pulled out the other 2 just because i was going to have trouble w/them later on.

it only took about a day to recover. just eat a lot of soups. and ice cream

This is all just one more conspiracy to be granted the opportunity to eat limitless amounts of ice cream, isn't it?

Hey Fig! How you doing?

I didn't know there was a difference between having them pulled or cut, Dodds. I wasn't completely under and mine were compacted pretty badly in the bottom. It seems that everybody's body just reacts COMPLETELY differently from the surgery and medications...

Had my wisdom teeth removed. I got dry socket from smoking. It sucked bad. The pain killers they give on the second round are not as good as the first ones, cause they think you got dry socket from being a dumbass. That's all I guess. Good Luck!

Well, I had my wisdom teeth taken out this morning. Crazy thing about is one of the doctors said "you're going to feel sleepy soon", and I don't even remember falling asleep. Woke up the operating room, nurse helped me to the recovery room, where I sat and listened to her talk to my mom. Since I couldn't really say anything with the gauze in my mouth, I used the aid of a dry erase board if I wanted to say something.

Heh, waking up after having something done with drugs to clear up the pain is really a weird sensation.

Hopefully you heal up quickly and feel very little hurt.
