My first reaction to seeing the trailer for this was why? Why? Why is Shymalalalananmanmananon directing this at all? So his kids like, that's a perfect reason for a shitty director to get first priority. Wait, why am I pissed about this? I don't even like Avatar.

I'm actually pretty excited about this, I'm not too sue about the person playing Aang, but when I saw the Fire-Nation's ships I felt better. I hope this turns out good...

From comicbookmovie.com:
"Lets be honest M. Night Shyamalan is not the first director who comes to mind when thinking about who should direct Avatar The Last Airbender. In fact he is almost the last director. It is well known that M. Night does not like to use action in his movies, he prefers to build on the anticipation of action and then at the end it kind of whimpers out. At least that's how it was in Lady of The Lake and The Village. Well with Avatar the successful director has no choice but to incorporate action into this film or it will bomb worse then a fat kid in Math class.
"It felt like an important movie to make," Shyamalan states. "The mythology of the series was so well thought out and has Buddhism and martial arts and… it has the deeper issues at its core. It's going to be a really fun summer movie, but underneath it there is a seriousness that talks about genocide and balance in the world and all the things that interest me that you've seen in other movies I've made."
I am glad he is taking this film seriously, but like I said M. Night you have to use action elements. This movie screams for some slow motion shots of Katara bending a drop pail of water and throwing it at the fire nation. Or Aang and Apa taking on a few of those Fire Nation ships that were introduced in the most recent trailer for the film.
Night says he was very careful with the way he is handling the series plot points, not only out of respect for the source material but for also the respect of the fans, namely his daughter. Nights daughter is rumored to be Avatar Obsessed. Which is good for us fans too. Night has also made the comment that he has put twice the work already into this film then he has had to do with his previous films. This statement gives me hope.
Noah Ringer (at 12, is already a bad ass black belt in Taekwondo) plays Aang the air bender, Nicola Peltz (Deck the Halls) and Jackson Rathbone (Jasper Cullen of Twilight fame) play friends Katara and Sokka, while Dev Patel in his first post Slumdog Millionaire role plays the evil Prince Zuko.
Patel goes on to say: "I wanted to do something as distant to Slumdog as possible," What's more different than playing a prince of a fairy tale nation who can control fire? I wanted to stretch myself as an actor. This guy in a nutshell, he's a villain with a heart. He's not evil for the sake of being evil."
Patel underwent martial arts and fight training for his action sequences. "They whipped my butt into shape," he states. Thank god.
Other cast include Aasif Mandvi (The Daily Show) as the Fire Nation Commander Shao, and Shaun Toub (Iron Man) as Uncle Iroh."

+1 for Aasif. I would go see this movie now even if I wasn't going to anyway purely to support his film career. Patel is going to be awesome too. What a great cast on the villain end.
As for M. Night...all I can say is, if this movie ends up being a dream, or having ANY other sort of stupid M. Night-esque twist at the end, I will start a riot in the theatre right then and there.

Wow, the more I hear the more I'm glad I haven't seen this. I got a phone call from a friend where he went on a 20 minute tirade about how they screwed up so much from the series (like firebenders only able to control/augment existing fires instead of creating them ala Pyro). Of course, you don't have to take my word for it, the movie got 9% fresh on rottentomatoes.com.

My understanding is that the special effects are great, the story - even with the changes - is fine, but the acting is terrible. Apparently M. Night just hired whatever kids he thought looked good for the parts, and none of them can act.

I saw this and have very little to say, but what I will say will be a lot.
Poor movie. Poorly acted by the most of the cast, story felt rushed, ending left no resolution. Characters made you feel no investment in them so you didn't care what happened.

This is exactly what I have read from most reviewers. The effects looked real cool in the trailers though. Would you at least say that it was entertaining on that level?

Yeah, this movie is getting absolutely destroyed by reviewers. I haven't witnessed a movie so universally panned in a long time. 8% on Rotten Tomatoes and currently 20/100 on Metacritic does not bode well for a film that's already in a niche.
I daresay this is the end of M. Night Shamalammadingdong.

Good. He deserves to die after ruining a perfectly good TV series.

At least it doesn't completely share its name with the series.
Also, I motion to change his nickname to "Shamwow." Second?

This movie was almost as bad a Jonah hex. Some people don't act, and others over act. It's boring, and nothing really happens. They also keep pulling plot points out of nowhere.

I actually really liked it. I haven't seen much of the series, but I thought that the effects were phenomenal while the actors were (with the exception of Fire Prince) mostly forgettable. The action scenes were pretty good, as well. I think you guys should give it a chance.

I did I saw it.
The Fire Prince was probably the best actor in the whole movie. Effects definitely don't make a movie good. This movie will be the definition of Bad for a new generation.

The guy that had to yell every time he opened his mouth, even when it wasn't called for, was the best actor in the whole movie?

Bleh... making The Last Airbender into a movie... bleh...
I'd rather have seen M. Night tackle a live action Fairly Odd Parents. It'd be bad, but I'd watch it.
