I think Douche proposed something like this some time ago, but nothing came out of it, so I'll try to do it myself.
Basically, this would work somewhat like the NES and SNES championships, except :
- No competition. No ranking. No time limit. You simply try to complete the challenges or get as far as you can.
- Anyone can post a challenge. If it starts from a save state, upload it.
- The challenge must be possible to fully complete and you should have video proof ready (mostly for RPGs).
Post here if you have suggestions on how this should be organized or if it should even be done at all.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Challenge List :
Challenge 1-5 (Super Mario Bros 3)
Challenge 6 (Pokemon Leaf Green)
Challenge 7 (Super Smash TV)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Challenges completed (in parenthesis : challenge completed, but created by the user itself) :
Not Sure : 2 (+0)
lavalarva : 0 (+6)

I like the laid back sounding nature of this, submitted entries should be put on Youtube so they could be posted in the thread and easily viewed by all.
Is that difficult to do?

^ This is the point, I was disappointed in the lack of discussion during the NES/SNES challenges,
so maybe not being against each other will make people more willing to discuss the challenges and point out strategies and such.
This is mostly to give people (like me) something to do in their free time or a way to show an obscure game you like by making a challenge about it.
I don't think we'll ever see a RPG used in the championships either, as rankings would be hard to determine.
Here you could make a challenge about beating Kefka without using magic or some other stuff you think is interesting to do.
About submitting entries, well it's not really necessary as it wouldn't be a competition, but it might be a good way to avoid a clusterfuck of videos all about the same thing.
Maybe make it as a walkthrough for those who struggle to complete the challenges?

Here's one that I'd like to see someone do:
Get 100 Super Jumps on Mario RPG and get the Super Suit from the Chow in Monstro Town.
Although with the amount on emulators, I'm sure it's not AS hard as it would be on a standard SNES.
Here's a challenge I was presented a long time ago;
On GTA III, get the 100th Hidden Package before you start the first mission on the game. No cheats.
Not only was it hard, but damn near impossible. First you have to get to the third island, exploiting several ingame glitches without dying, get to the airport, grab the Dodo, then FLY the wingless plane to the lift bridge and crash land on the top. By crash land, I mean navigate your plane around the beams then bank hard so you crash. I wish I would've taped myself doing this, because it was indeed an amazing feat that I reccomend.

That gta challenge is insane. I was always able to get the ones on the first island before the first mission.

It's exactly as hard on an emulator as it is on a real SNES. It's only easier if you use save states while you do it, which is obviously illegal in a challenge like this.

Please try to post challenges you did or at least attempted yourself. The point is not to annoy the fuck out of everybody else with insanely hard bullshit stuff. Ask Not Sure for that
All I have ready to post right now is that Frog Suit challenge we had before, save states for Worlds 1 to 5 :
World 1
World 2
World 3
World 4
World 5
World 1's save state is from the NES Challenge (consider it as training for the other worlds), others are from me.
Try to complete every level in a World. This includes defeating the Hammer Bros (and the airship obviously).
World 2 and 4 are easy (compared to the others), World 3 is strangely hard for a water world (lack of underwater levels) and World 5... fuck World 5.

I also failed to mention, you NEED the crashed Dodo to reach the package. The package is on a ledge, and since you can't climb on your own, you need to hop on the wreckage in order to reach it. If you allow the wrecked vehicle to leave your sight sometimes, it will disappear. Luckily it didn't happen to me, but I've heard other people have had bad luck.
I basically used this in order to get a Master File when I decide to play through III again, straight story...no BS side quests.

I approve of this.
I have some ideas, but I might be saving them for the official championship. We'll see.
Also, the frog suit idea looks interesting. Is it even possible, though? There must be a bunch of impossible levels.

I'd do this just to have more videos on my YouTube channel. I think there should at least be a running tally of how many challenges are completed by whom, but not sorted in any other way (difficulty, time, ranking, etc.)

World 6, 7 and 8 are impossible because you can't duck as Frog Mario. World 1 to 4 I have videos of, while I must have done like 150 attempts on World 5.
The only way the last three worlds could be done is to reach the impossible part, get hit, finish the level and apply the frog suit cheat before the next level. Too much of a pain.

Good idea. When you complete a challenge, you can post "Challenge XYZ completed" along with a movie file from the emulator as a proof (should be easy enough to upload), and I'll run a tally either in the first post or in a new thread, I don't know which would be best yet.

Here's a very easy one (I cleared this on my test run, so the video is really boring) :
Pokemon LeafGreen. Beat Brock with level 7 Pokemon, starter is Charmander. Don't exit the gym (I don't want you to buy potions and such).
Game
Save State
I wanted this to be challenging, but I only played FireRed/LeafGreen in hacks, and Brock was never that pathetic.

For GBA games, VBA Recorder is by far the best, as it doesn't have issues with audio/video syncing. Of course you could simply record a movie file and not an AVI.

Yeah, like that underground ice level where you have to fly up while holding that white block in order to break the bricks blocking the exit pipe, not gonna happen in a frog suit.

I'm not sure if i originated the Idea for NES challenges, I don't know if i did, I do know i had the idea, and i posted it here before it was made. Glad it's popular it's a good idea whoever put it all together.
I like this idea as well, i don't think it'll be as popular but i think people will participate if you organize it well.
I think you can have ideas submitted, but i think someone officially, perhaps you, picks an idea from those posted, and says alright we're doing this one. you quote the person etc... and then after a week or so you close it and pick another. That way you have some consistency and people can be doing the same challenge during the same week. Maybe not have a overall scoring system, but just say who completed each challenge the best, and list everyone, but no points, just a one time recognition then onto next challenge.
I think challenges are just more fun when you're competing.. people are curious if they can do better than others or how high they can rank, or whatever.. all that jazz. Those are what I'd propose.
Then Syd can give special priveledge on the site to those who complete these challenges, since it encourages community invovlement, and will make his site more livley, which increases traffic and welcome new comers. Who are like wow this site has alot of active people... a lot of neat stuff goes on.. i'll stay.
The people that participate in these Official Forum Events (OFEs) can get special font colors for text, or perhaps the Title: under their username.. will glow.
This could also back fire cause jealousy, and people flaunting (oh i have glowy text yadda yadda yadda) if done right it would encourage community growth and involvement. Some parts just think I like people doing it naturally. It's just like post count.. people will do it. and these perks are actually more useful than Ha i have 300k posts.

^ I mostly did this because of the near-impossibility to include RPGs in the official event. It just doesn't work in a competition.
Think of it as a list of challenges people can do whenever they want to kill time on something. The list won't get very big if I'm the only one making them though.
I'm currently busy trying to complete my own, and I have one in mind that will take a LONG time to prepare.
Of course, crappy challenges (impossible, way too easy, etc.) won't count.

I see what you're saying. That makes a lot of sense to do longer single challenges in that way, of which, RPG challenges are a good example.
I tried to look back to see if i could find my post on challenges. And I found one. But it's very raw. Basically I recommended their be competition of any sort, playing off people's interest here in the community. One example I gave at the time was to have everyone submit a comic book character anonomously, A drawing with a brief back story.. then their placed into brackets adn posted two at a time each week. And forum members vote each week, and then eventually there will be a winner. It wasn't directly NES challenges, it was more recurring challenges/competitions in general that i submitted. I tried to see if i had any more specific examples in other older post of mind and i couldn't find any.

I have yet to clear level 8. The platform with the pipe at the end is too high and Lakitu will bump into you by going very fast because of the scrolling screen.
I don't know yet if it's better to kill it at the end with a turtle or try to jump on him from one of the raised cloud platforms. I get hit by spiny beetles before I can even try.
Haven't seen level 9 yet, but I'm sure it'll be something even harder just to piss me off.
