Third thread this week about recommendations, lay off, is what I thought before I made this thread, but I was planning on having I like to call a Shmup-a-thon. Basically, I take tons of shmups of any type and play them all, not in any specific amount of time. Any type of shmup too. If you could recommend more after my list, it'd be appreciated. Side note, most of the games on the list are Freeware, if you could recommend some games that aren't but any recommendations of Shmups are fine. My list so far:

I always loved playing what shoot-'em-ups I could get my hands on however I never reached the levels of greatness others have. One of my favorites is Recca for the NES. I don't think it was released stateside however it's worth checking out if you can find a copy of it in some form.

And I'm pretty sure Darius/Parodius/Gradius/R-Type aren't so much freeware as they are pirated ROMs, but I could be wrong.
I'm currently trying to learn to adjust my vision to Raiden Fighters Jet. Some of the fighters just launch to fucking much shit at one time and I cant see a fucken thing, but the others are sweet.

Hydorah, a freeware horizontal shmup. To quote the site, "The whole game takes obvious influence from Gradius, Castlevania or R-Type, but also from other classics treated worse by the time: Turrican, Enforcer, Space Manbow, Hellfire, Guardian, Hydefos, Armalyte and many others..."
