The Grand Theft Auto series. Almost everyone I know owns a version of this game and they've never completed more than 3 missions before they get bored and the game devolves into just killing everything they see. But they just keep buying them because "You can kill cops and nail prostitutes!!"
They're mediocre games but they benefited from all the media attention they got. Its a perfect example of human psychology. The moral majority shouts "This game should be banned! No one should ever be allowed play this game!" and it just makes people go out and by it. I guess I can give them props for knowing how to manipulate the public.

The Pokemon games. They're pretty good (though very frustrating at times), but I don't get why people spend so much damn time playing them.
People trying to get perfect stats or resetting the game over a thousand times to get a shiny are insane and the game doesn't warrant putting that much time into it.
I wasn't impressed at all with 4th Gen. Fights seemed so damn slow and most of the stuff they added were just useless time wasters.

There's some truth to that, but generally I think they're still fun games. It's true that I have 95% of my fun while not playing actual missions, but rather running around finding collectibles, exploring, ramping cars off things, jumping out of airplanes, etc. It's the openness I enjoy, not necessarily the theme.

I'd agree with you, but... I'm one of those people. Not the shiny part, though, that's fucking insane. Or perfect stats, I'm fine with sub-par. I'm not that picky with my pokemon.

Haha I feel ya.
I am still very addicted to Soul Silver. The last Pokemon game I played before this was the original Silver (and I never even finished it), so there are alot for people like me to see at this point.

I'm kinda that way. I mean you have ONE save file, so it's not like you can just experiment with one and keep another file for serious shit, so I've probably played through Silver about 6 times because I wanted to find different things including shiny Pokemon, although I wasn't obsessed with getting them, since most looked gay. My shiny silver Rapidash was awesome though.
I will say this, Pokemon is probably the best RPG ever. I hate to say that because it's definately not my favorite RPG, but in terms of fun, replayability and success, nothing comes close.

Sonic the Hedgehog series. Why? Because, it (Sonic) was simply made to cash in on the popularity of Mario, and I just hate those kinds of things. Secondly, all you seem to be able to do in the game (at least in the 2D Sonic games) is run ridiculously fast and jump into walls. Now, I'm not trying to offend Sonic fans, I personally just don't like the game. I don't care if you like Sonic or not. But if you obsess over it, I might think differently. I also have to say that the games in the sports genre, especially the racing sub-genre, can become quite over-rated.

As I mentioned in a previous post, I'm not a fan of platformers, but I generally liked Sonic more than Mario. I just felt that the graphics and overall style was more interesting, even if Sonic couldn't do as much stuff as Mario could.

A damn fine one at that, the games have no replayability whatsoever and the stories have been repeated way too much across multiple games. It's all text and fancy cutscenes.
*Venting*
But I'm a guy who enjoys more active genres such as platformers, fighters, and racing games so yeah.

Yea I am generally a fighter fan, although I do love RPGs.
I would say that your assessment for most contemporary JRPGs is correct, although I feel that the JRPG library on the SNES is pretty remarkable.
I hate to go with the cliche' game here, but Chrono Trigger is one of the most re-playable RPGs of all time IMO (and probably is in my case).

Agree:
Guitar Hero/Rockband: I have never liked any of these games. I personally don't find them fun whatsoever, it's gimmicky and boring. It holds the same gameplay as Parappa the Rapper except you get to pretend to play a guitar. I have a lot of friends who spend way too much time on these games and I will never understand it. To each their own though.
Halo Series: I was playing Counter-Strike and Goldeneye years before Halo. I was more annoyed with the game then I was impressed. The jumping mechanics on this game drive me crazy. The only real enjoyment I've gotten is playing 4 players in one room.
UFC Undisputed: I've been a MMA fan for over 6 years and I've been waiting for a game to come close to the excitement. I bought Undisputed 09 the day it came out. I spent 4 days playing the game and I haven't played it since. I didn't bother picking up 2010. The graphics are subpar, the game feels slow and it's way to easy to end fights. Nothing about this game impresses me.
RE5: While I enjoyed the game somewhat I still don't get that same feeling I got when I played the earlier ones.
Disagree:
Half-Life: My favorite FPS single player experience. Loved the game, the action, the platforming, the small puzzles, the story. Loved Counter-Strike and TF as well.
Castlevania: Love them, pure and simple. Playing Castlevania games since I was 7 and while some are better than others I've only truely been disappointed once.
Don't play own or play any sport games so I can't comment there. And I do feel like the RPGs of today don't hold a candle to the classics.

Gears of War.
Nice brown and gray graphics, clunky controls, stick to everything, shitty story.

The gameplay is a bit monotonous but I didn't think the controls were overbearingly clunky.
I thought the first one was pretty good, played through the campaign a bunch of times.
The second one did not really do it for me, and the third one looks like more of the same. I will admit they have the most satisfying head-shot in any game to this day.

As someone who was into FPS games since the days of MIDI Maze and Wolfenstein 3D, I can tell you that Halo is indeed overrated. It was nothing special in any way whatsoever. Compared to other games at the time, the level design, premise, and weapons were incredibly shoddy. Halo is only famous for one reason: it introduced ham-fisted fratboy retards who has long since infected their PCs to the point of unuseable while trying to find free porn to the amazing wonders of LAN gaming on the XBox. Oh boy! LAN gaming! That was fucking fantastic in 1992. But Halo came out in 2001, when people who weren't moronic douchebags were playing FAR SUPERIOR shooting games like Unreal and Counterstrike on computers over the INTERNET. Halo is garbage. People should be ashamed for liking it. Liking Halo is like saying Earthworm Jim 3D is your favorite 3D platformer. You only like it because you haven't played any good games.
Madden is good at what it does. I hate sport games, and I loathe people who own nothing but sports game, but I also known plenty of people who have a copy of the latest Madden on their bookshelf wedged in between BlazBlue and Brutal Legend. |
But was Halo a groundbreaking console FPS?
Did it have the best console FPS graphics?
Did it have the best console FPS controls?
Did it have the best console FPS multiplayer?

In my humble opinion, the Call of Duty series is overrated. While I'm impressed by the realism and whatnot, it just feels awkward in a video game, at least how they pull it off. I like Modern Warfare a little better, but I'm not happy with its multiplayer.
Every time I tried to play MW2's multiplayer, I die almost as soon as I fucking respawn. I'll take Team Fortress 2 or Halo 3's multiplayer over this any day.
Oh, and pretty much every portable Sonic game. The branching paths did not go well with the high speed and easy-to-run-into enemies. They were NOT that great, in my opinion...

Halo, of course. I played a bit of it and got very bored because I felt like I had played this a long time ago.
Half Life 2. Oh boy, one of my favorite games ever, but still being horribly overhyped and overpraised. Most sections felt a bit padded along (Vehicle sections and such), physics puzzles that had little variety to them (SEESAWS WHEEE) and a War of the World story (which was told pretty damn well ingame, which kind of outbalances it). It's a VERY great game, still nowhere near as godly as people make it out to be.
OoT. I might get some flak for this, but I liked this game as I played it, but there was something that didn't quite fit. I feel what ruined it is that the game is GET HOOKSHOT -> USE HOOOKSHOT ON HOOKSHOT PANEL -> WHEEE. It's like some sort of gates you have to unlock and blah... I don't know what I'm saying anymore.
To that guy who said Mother 3, we can't and will never be friends.
To that guy who said Rock Band/Guitar Hero because he'd like to play instruments, what, these two things require completely different skills and are rewarding in their own way. What are you smoking, since when is playing a plastic guitar a substitute for a real guitar? It's like comparing apples to oranges.

Okay, I never said I hated either game. I think both are fun, it's just that I'd rather play an actual guitar. I don't get it. People seemingly assume I hate all the games I mentioned. Overrated does NOT equate to bad quality, okay?

Yeah, I see what you mean. Just watch. Someone is probably going to accuse me for trolling or some shit for expressing my opinion. |
I'm actually surprised this thread has made it this far without anyone flaming the shit out of someone. Of course everyone is going to have their opinion as to what they thought was overrated. As for me, I'm going to have to go with the Super Mario series. Now I'm not saying I dislike them. I just don't feel they were quite as phenomenal as their popularity indicated. Super Mario 3 was considered the best NES game ever. I personally don't agree, it was fun, but not my favorite by any means. I don't even think it was in my top ten. Super Mario 2 was fun but ridiculously easy.

True, I never finished one either. I don't know what it is, I liked the gameplay they just started to bore me after several levels.
I don't think that they are inherently bad games.
