GamesRadar alerts folks that in a recent interview with Edge magazine, the legendary Hideo Kojima, head of super-studio Kojima Productions, revealed his unlikely and unhinged vision for a zombie-themed game. According to Kojima, he's "less interested in the idea of the living dead than the fact you can turn people just by biting them." So much is his focus on "turning" people, that he even considers implementing his take on zombie-apocalypse in a massively-multiplayer online environment.

He explains:

Imagine a large town where half the inhabitants are zombies. Users would subscribe, get inside the town and get bitten. At that stage they become undead and can't control their character - all they can do is modify the camera angles.

...They'd see their character attacking humans and have to pay just to watch! ...The only way they could end it is by opening another account, hunting themselves down and killing themselves. Of course, the problem is that your second character can get bitten as well.

Not getting to control your character if you get turned? Having to hunt your former "self" and kill it (if it got zombified it's an "it" now), just to progress the game? Get bombarded by cinematics of mindless zombies? All too silly? Well, despite Kojima's own reservations about his over-the-top and unlikely Zombie-MMO, he says that he won't rule the idea out. GamesRadar reports that should he feel that the moment is opportune, he will "take some time to prepare. Very seriously."

Well, the cinematic aspect of the whole thing is trademark Kojima.

This is going to be rad! Razz

The concept seems cool, but not being able to control your character is a bit...odd....

But that's the way it's supposed to happen in real life? WHAT!?
Kojima-sama has too much knowledge dimension 'n existance in his brains...
(And I used to think that he had seen WAY too many movies back then)

EDIT: Could this game have something to do with that game you could play demo of in MGS3? The "Guy Savage"?

Urban Dead has a system where if you're bitten and infected, and eventually turn, you can control your zombie and even gain skills as one (such as gesturing in certain directions to signal others), but they also have a revivifcation system.

When creating their characters, people can choose to be humans or zombies. It's kinda fun until you max your character out. Since doing that, i haven't signed in for a few weeks. Someone's probably killed me by now, and so I'll have to shuffle around and feed on people.

But a graphical one headed by Kojima would be cool...as long as you don't have to keep buying accounts

Excuse me if buying an account to most likely have your game become a movie doesn't thrill me. Granted, I'm not a big zombie fan in the first place, but I do love the RE and Silent Hill games. The idea of watching yourself as a zombie go around and bite people doesn't sound like it would be appealing for more than 5 minutes. To hunt your former self down, you'd have to make a new account. Whether or not you'd have to pay for it, that would just be a major pain in the ass, especially if you suck at the game.

RIP Hacker.

I wonder how you'll play this game anyway? Guess there should be some difficulty on the zombies to get your character off-line(by control), like close quaters weapons only and/or fast undead creatures(Cerberus RE Rolling Eyes) to harden things up. And I'd bet that if another player kills your zombified character, you should get the control over him/her back. But the problem still is; does this game get a green light?

I agree with JEW.

Imagine if people don't actually have an infinite of money. You would end up watching your zombie just shamble about with nobody to bite. Thats really boring. And theres no curve cause nobody can compete with anyone else. No PVP, probably no treasure collecting, you have to refresh if you die, thats serious boring.

I'm not really worried about a lack of PVP. I play games that require skill to play against other players, not MMO grind-fests that take no real gaming talent, just build knowledge and gear.

The game sounds okay though.

you want a zombie mmo?

here:

You are the inhabitant of a small town that recently came under viral attack by terrorists. The entire town is infected, and slowly turn into zombies. The town has been quarantined, and a state of emergency has been issued. There is a drug that slows the zombification process, as well as a amall amount of somethign that can cure it. you play as one of the infected as you do things like form blockades or collect weapons to arm yourself against those who have already turned, as wll as doign all you can to find the cure, or at least stay alive. you start out fine, with certin human abilities, like lockpicking or whatnot, and as you turn into a zombie, you lose some abilities that require humanity, but gain others, such as combat prowress. there are certian parts of the city that you can only get into as a zombie, and otheres you need to be a human to do, so the trick is finding the right balance between humanity nad zombification, and keeping it.

now you have to wnder hwo far you woudl go to find hte cure. would you be willing to throw your teammates to the proverbial wolves to save yoruself? would you want somoene to work with you, for fear that tehy could turn into a zombie overnight? it gives that element of tension like in the zombie movies, where everyone is constantly on guard, even though they are exausted. could you really kill the guy you've been playing wiht for three months and come to know as a pal, because he's a zombie now?

the ony thing I'm not sure about is how to make sure zombies and humans don't work together.

Howsabout some system where both the human and zombie player take damage if they're with each other for a set amount of time without actively trying to kill each other.

I'm not feeling the human/zombie seesaw. Zombification is always bad. And if the supplies to achieve balance are present, then its not desperate enough.

I think a strong survival aspect should come about. Anyone could turn into a zombie, and you can't tell very well. Maybe the character looks or reacts sickly for a little bit, and maybe they turn into a zombie. Even better, the stalling medicine doesn't always work, and you can't tell how well its working. So you might get real sick and zombify. But maybe it works and you end up looking sick. Nobody can tell, so your teammates may decide to just kill you for safety reasons.

I like the barrier thing. Searching for food, ammo, and other such items should come into play.

Maybe you can conquer a city, and turn it into a safe zone (ala the last of the dead movie, the one with john leguazamo). But the zombiepocalypes marches forward, and even a safe zone can't ward forever. And you would run the city dry.

In any case the zombie MMO has potential, but metal gear man is way off.
