I've heard that's a good way to scratch discs. I stand my system vertically, however, and I've not experienced this.

I always keep mine flat. I don't like sticking discs in a vertical tray.

the scratch happens (from what i've read) when you move your system from vertical standing, to laying it flat. if you do that while the game is being played, then you're fucked.
also, this:

Microsoft Confirms Arcade Version of Slim Xbox 360
The redesigned Xbox 360 will be getting a new SKU later this year. Microsoft has confirmed a $199 variant for the fall, making it the slim equivalent of an Xbox 360 Arcade.
The $199 variant was discovered in an internal marketing Q&A by Kotaku, and later confirmed by Microsoft (via Joystiq). It is unknown whether this version will include a hard drive or internal WiFi.
A Kinect bundle was also mentioned in the Q&A, but the document said that they have "no additional details about pricing or retail strategy to share at this time." Microsoft declined to comment on the Kinect bundle.
Regardless, a Kinect bundle seems inevitable; the only question is how much it will cost. Between that and the two Slim SKUs, look for the older model to be quietly phased out as we head into the holiday season.
Changed the title to reflect general info on the new system.

Well, fuck. I don't feel like banning the neighbor's kids from my room, so this will have to wait.
What's that 25 cents piece missing from the console anyway? Maybe I could just install the damn thing myself.

The way to save your discs is to place a piece of foam tape on the inside of the top cover of the drive so that if the console is moved, the disc will touch the foam and thus not wobble as much and will not touch the lens.
Some drives have some already, but the piece would be needed in between the two, but still on the edge of where the disc is.

I'm sorry but I typically don't move anything while a disc is spinning inside of it. Especially when there is a BIG ASS STICKER saying not to.

I tend to agree there. You wouldn't stick your hand under a lawnmower while it's running.

I am confused.
Why aren't the DVD's secured when they are being played?
Laptops seem to have no problem being moved while DVD's are in them. Hell, my old Sony Walkman CD player from 1992 had no problem being moved, fuck they even had Electronic Shock Protection (ESP).
This seems to be a common enough issue that Microsoft might just want to use a DVD drive that holds the disk in place while it is spinning.

cuz they use magnets to hold the disc in place, rather than having the disc secured w/a.... whatever you call that thing that holds it in place.
at least, thats what i recall reading a while ago. i could be wrong.

Run it over a bunny rabbit. Diced bunny = mower is working. Crushed bunny = mower is not working

Why would you move your console when you're playing stuff? Of course it's gonna scratch it to hell, the old ones do it too.
Anyways, I just got my 360 last October. Unless something bad happens to it, I don't see getting a 360 with some features it should have had in the first place added on.

Accidents happen.
Also, laptop drives are meant to be moved while the drive is working, whereas the console drive is a regular PC optical drive. Chances are if you move your PC while it's reading from the optical drive, it'll scratch as well, but a PC typically weighs 20 lbs and is much bigger, so people generally don't move them, even by accident.

Yeah, the difference is laptops and walkmans (men?) are designed to be moved and bumped around while in operation. Consoles are not; they are designed to be stationary and on the floor.

I am slightly concerned about the necessity to have it lying down. I have ha my xbox standing straight up and never had an issue. But I am not sure how that relates to the new one.

Well the console was designed to be either flat or standing, it even has little rubber feet on one of the narrow sides, I don't think it's supposed to be a problem.
I know quite a few people who have their consoles standing, and AFAIK they've never had any problems either.

I am not arguing the point that a person should avoid moving a console or PC while it is running. I am simply stating that this problem seems to be a large enough one that it warrants a fix. Just swap the drive type out to one that can handle motion and the problem is solved, no warning needed, less drives busted, less problems.

Microsoft Introducing $99 Xbox Live Gold Family Plan
Microsoft is working hard to rebrand the Xbox 360 as a family-friendly entertainment hub this fall, and as part of the effort will start offering a family pack of Gold memberships. Major Nelson gives word that starting this November, Microsoft will offer a family plan that includes four Xbox Live Gold memberships for $99.99.
In addition to the value of extra Gold accounts, the family plan includes a "Family Center" menu. This will allow parents to access content restrictions and activity reports on Xbox.com. The primary account holder can also buy and distribute points, and get access to exclusive family content and discounts. Microsoft is also planning on updating the Family Settings in November, to allow parents to filter out video and game content by rating. The new settings will also allow permissions for particular games that parents find acceptable.
Microsoft is fighting a war on two fronts now. The emphasis on family play and motion faces the company squarely against Nintendo's casual dominance, while Sony's PlayStation Plus is creating competition in what qualifies as paid features. This move could be a shot across the bow of both camps, offering more family features while also creating a steep discount for those who want multiple Gold memberships.
They apparently did fix the problem with the second generation, or at least reduced the likelihood of it happening.

I'll wait a little bit and see if any bundle deals come out soon. My 360 is still working, but I've got the certified ghettolicious Xenon chip (the first wave of 360s) that red-ringed once in December '08 and is likely to explode in a big fiery ball visible from space at any moment.
Also, I don't think there's really much danger in keeping the 360 standing vertically unless you're a 'tard and decide to move it around while playing or such, as in the video posted above. My personal preference is to keep the machine horizontal, though, cause sadly enough my 360 did get punted by a friend in an accident. Even if it happens, relax, it's probably just the CD that needs a fix. Go to Hastings, Blockbuster, or some other CD shop and they can buffer your game for a minimal fee or for free.
