So pretty much it is a female condom that a girl would wear when they do not want to have sex.

If a guy rapes that girl his penis would be trapped inside a latex condom with teeth that clamp down on it. It doesn't puncture the penis, but it supposedly stops the man from peeing or walking. In addition they say it can only be removed from a doctor.

There are some serious issues I see with this. First, they are going to cost $2 each. Are they going to be reusable? Because if not, imagine wearing one every day. Seems like it would be uncomfortable and consistently warning that men are horrible beings. No question that some guys are terrible, but living in that type of fear is unhealthy for anyone.

The article suggests that this will be used in areas that are known for high amounts of rape attacks. I suppose it would start to whittle out the offenders, but imagine the type of aggression a guy who is already raping a woman would have after she injures him. That leads to the next horrible thing. This does nothing to stop the rape initially. The man still penetrates the woman and she still has the same horrible experience.

I don't like hand guns, but they seem like they might be a more effective solution than female condoms with teeth.

What's stopping the rapists from taking them out before committing the act? Won't the women who use this have to remove it to go to the bathroom themselves?

You're approaching the story from the perspective of a secure American GP. The fact that this was invented and is available in South Africa speaks volumes about where it's intended to be used. Rape is a pretty common occurance throughout Africa so it'll probably find some use there. There are some design flaws sure, but something is needed to curb one of the many problems Africa has.

I'm not sure how effective this will be in Africa. For an African woman, these could be the difference between being raped and being killed.

It's nothing new. Such devices have been known to exist going all the way back to the 15th century.

Uh, and by condom, they mean diaphragm right? Cause last I checked, neither I nor any other female is able to wear a condom...just sayin'...

I think Panda basically hit the nail on the head. This sort of thing isn't for American women to wear then they go grocery shopping. Its for women raised in a very different culture who are at a very high risk of being attacked.

I gotta tell you though, it would ALMOST be worth wearing one every day just to see the look on Mr. one-in-a-million's face when those teeth sink in. Very Happy

I agree that this type of thing is more likely to get a woman killed than to prevent rape. I don't expect that the would-be rapist would pull himself out of the girl, find this thing on his schlong and just say "oh, well.....that didn't work. You may go about your business." More likely he'd fly into a fit of rage and kill the girl.

Now if they're trying to make these things widespread enough to be a rape-deterrant, that might be different.

I think the idea is that the teeth will cause the rapist to recoil long enough for the victim to shove him off, run for it and possibly get another attack in. If they do find wide distribution, the fear alone will deter some of the rapists until they find a way around it. The worst I can see coming from this is that someone will come up with an inexpensive dildo or something to probe for one of these things and remove it safely.

I heard about this yesterday at my university news paper while I was copy editing. it sounds more like it should be a torture device for the army rather than for commercial use.

But the thing is though, the woman has to be committed to using it on an attacker. She has to be committed to using it to harm someone or kill someone. If she hesitates, then the attacker can just take it from her and use it against her and then she's dead.

Oh jesus, you HAD to reference that movie, didn't you? Sadly, the chopped off penises were NOT the most fucked up part of that movie.

Like Syd said, these could actually be the difference between getting raped and getting killed, and a quick biology lesson-- girls don't pee out of the same opening they have sex with.
