With tax, the system would cost me $318.74.
If I trade in console, router, and hard drive, I can get $180 off. If I trade in my second controller, that bumps it up to $205. Seems like a solid enough deal. But paying $138 for a slightly better version of a $300 console I already doesn't seem worth it to me. Also, the router was a Christmas gift, so I'd feel shitty trading it in.

I have the arcade system and 20 gig harddrive so it's worth it.

I spent $100 for my wireless adapter when it first came out. Offering me $40 for it when they still sell them for $75 is a slap in the face.

i still have my elite working fine. i dont think i need this upgrade, but the built in wi-fi is sweet.
if my internet connection didnt suck so much ass, i would definitely consider taking advantage of this deal.

I kinda want this, but I don't want to part with my final fantasy faceplate, and I use a wired connection anyway for live.

Welcome to capitalism. $40 is over 50% what they're going to sell it for, and that's pretty much standard. A reseller isn't going to give you more than 50-60% what they can sell something for, or it's not worth their time. And it might sit on a shelf in their store room for months. It might never sell at $75. It might not sell until the 2014 OMG 360 Clearance Sale when they let it go for $20.
GameStop is getting better. I remember when they used to aggressively promote deals where you could trade in three games that came out last month for the hot new game that just came out. Yeah.... about that.... fuck off.

Don't forget to add the 150 for Project Kinatal. I'm a little shocked at this move by MS, why release a new system so late in the game that really does not improve much on the old? All it really does is tank the value of the current consoles. It looks real nice, but no blu-ray means more three disc sets that belong on one. I don't hate MS or love Sony but this console update makes little sense to me. If I owned a 360 still, I don't think I would fall for this banana in the tale pipe.

Ash,
It is to entice people like me who don't own the system yet. It matches up with the new hardware and makes it more appealing than buying a 2 year old model.

This seems like a good deal to me. I've been itching for the Wi-Fi and a larger hard drive, but didn't want to pay the highway-robbery prices they were charging for those things. Now that it can apparently be had for a little over $100, I may spring for it.
Although I'm curious to see what kind of heat issues the slim 360 will have. I'm far from being a computer-build-genius-guy, but from what I understand the previous models' RROD issues were caused by heat. Now we've got all the components in an even tighter package. I'd like to wait at least a few weeks (this deal expires 7/1 and see what kind of reports the slim is getting.

Yeah the package is smaller, but the hardware probably requires less power and most likely releases less heat. Kinda like how the PS3 Slim runs a lot cooler and a lot quieter than the original. Except they removed features from the PS3 Slim and they're actually ADDING features to the 360.

Yeah, I suppose that makes sense. I mean. looking at a PS3 Slim and then looking at the old clunky RROD no wifi XBox I would not even think twice. The new model looks damn good and I can see the reason to try and steal away potential PS3 buyers.

Trust me I understand it, it doesn't mean I have to like it. My 360 works just fine, so passing this up won't hurt me at all.

My 3-year RROD warranty has just expired, so I'm considering the upgrade. I wonder if they're keeping their RROD policy on the new one.

I read somewhere that a "Red" ring of death is now impossible because they removed the red LED lights.
Problem solved.

Well I have had y xbox quite a while and not red ringed once. This is likely do my my japser xobx running at lower power. The new xbox runs even lower than the jasper so a ring (or dot in it's case) is less likely.

New Xbox 360 Can Shut Down to Prevent RRoD-Style Damage
A listing of the differences between current models of the Xbox 360 and the new black one announced at E3 last week revealed that the new systems would no longer be able to give the Red Ring of Death. More specifically, it lacked the red light around the power button to display the error; it's not that the system is necessarily invulnerable to suffering the issue.
But the new 360s are smarter about trying to avoid a potential RRoD-style death -- if the system isn't properly venting, the power button will turn red and the system will shut itself off in order to avoid any serious damage. It'll display the message you see above (via NeoGAF, Engadget) which explains the situation and informs you that the system can be turned back on once the power light has stopped flashing.
It might be somewhat annoying to have your 360 shut off on you in the midst of a play session, but that still seems highly preferable to ending up with the Red Ring of Death and being unable to play for a few weeks while your system is off at Microsoft being repaired. |

Will it still have the Scratch Ring of Death, though? I've had a PSX fall from 4 feet during gameplay at least five times, so I have good reason to fear it.

Apparently that was already fixed in the most recent models.
I got one without the console even being touched. My game was fine, I put it in, started playing and eventually just got an unreadable disc warning and the disc was ringed.
