Not to start another 'argument' thread, but I've never played a Zelda game newer than Link to the Past. What would be the most recommended?

the original is classic, but a bit cryptic with the hints on where the fuck to go next. I recommend A Link To The Past. If that doesn't get you in to Zelda nothing will.

My favorites are Windwaker and Minish Cap. I hated Phantom Hourglass and never really got into Twilight Princess. But then again, I realize my opinion is in the minority as to what the best LoZ games are so take it with a grain of salt.

I like all of the Game Boy ones and The Minish Cap more than any of the console games. Of those, I finished Oracle of Ages and Minish Cap by myself. I haven't tried the DS ones yet, but if my little brother's impressions of them are anything to go by, I'm probably not missing out on much. They need to get Capcom back for the next one.

they are all good. never played a zelda i didn't like.

The Twilight Princess starts off slow, but once you get about two hours in, it really is an amazing game. On the other hand, Wind Waker begins a little faster, but somewhat dies in the middle if you get lost at sea.

In 2010, you may feel that Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask look dated. That is because they are. 2D games never really lost anything because graphically 2D games aren't much better now than they were for the SNES. 3D games however have progressed significantly in both play control and graphics. I would say that even with its amazing #1 rating, Ocarina of time will not be the best game to invest yourself into if you are looking for a fun title in 2010.

i have to agree w/GP on this one. twilight princess takes forever to get started, but once it does, its a fun ride.

wind waker was fun as well, if you can get past some of the tedium of sailing. but i think it has the best combat out of most of the console zeldas.

the handheld zelda games are great. the DS ones might turn you off because of the stylus-only controls, but they're not too shabby.

The puzzle aspects of Zelda games are usually handled well. Nintendo really puts effort into them being tricky, but not difficult enough to be off putting.

That said, any Zelda game will be fun, but the DS games are on a small screen and use a stylus. I completed the Phantom Hourglass, but I wouldn't replay it and I really can't recommend it. It was probably my least favorite Zelda game to play.

I'm not a big fan of the DS Zelda games, but I really liked Twilight Princess. It's already been said in here, but after the initial hour or two, it's such a big and fun world to explore. It's basically Ocarina of Time on steroids.

OoT will always have a special place for me, but starting fresh Twilight Princess is probably the best overall game.

To be fair, it wasn't the small screen and stylus of the DS that made Phantom Hourglass unenjoyable and tedious for me. It was just a poorly designed game that forced you to retread the Ocean King dungeon over and over again from the beginning, which very quickly became maddeningly tedious. Add to that the ridiculous time-waster that was the female pirate who intercepted your ship every now and then for no reason, and the stupid fishing minigame, there was just very little to enjoy in the game.

Majora's Mask was the most enjoyable, although Twilight Princess has more to do. They're both really good and are respectively my 2nd and 3rd favorite games in the series, right after the original.

I vote for Ocarina of Time. Even if it looks rather ugly nowadays, I still play it roughly once a year just for kicks. It's too damn enjoyable =)

Please start with Ocarina. If you've never played anything past LttP, then going for Ocarina will enable to relive the "holy shit" moment that so many of us went through when it first came. Maybe it won't be the same for someone who has played a lot of modern non-Zelda games since then, because you probably won't find it that badass to all of a sudden be all "OH FUCK, I'VE GOT A HORSE!" Okay, so maybe don't start with Ocarina. However, I will say that Twilight Princess is even more enjoyable if you've been through Ocarina of Time. Lots of subtle and not-so-subtle interconnections.

Majora's Mask is a very well designed. It's very un-Zelda, but it's amazing.

As I read through this thread, I'm changing my vote to Ocarina of Time. Play that before you play Twilight Princess. I realize that one reason I enjoyed TP so much was the familiarity, yet differences, between those two games. Lesh said it best.

I always loved Link's Awakening the best. It was simple yet satisfying and the music was catchy as hell. I love the Ballad of the Windfish and the story isn't bad for a gameboy game. I thought it was a good introduction to the series and I found it to easily have my favorite overworld.

I also find that I like Wind Waker a lot as well.

Ocarina of Time was the 'holy shit' game for me. Majora's Mask pulled me in with it's incredible story-line and interactivity, Wind Waker was a nice game in terms of free-roaming and provided a nice break from the traditional walking scheme, and Twilight Princess was the joygasm game for me. In short, I recommend all of them.

Old games rarely had hints on where the fuck to go next but that always added to the challenge of them. Actually the first one is where I started. It's easily the one I've played the most. Followed by LttP. Went through Zelda 2, only once. I guess it must've been my least favorite so far, although I did beat it. But yes, the first one will always be a classic to me.

The only game console I own newer than the SNES is the PS2. So I guess I'll have to invest in an N64 or a hand held device of some sort. What would be the most recommended on the game boy advance?

Link's Awakening by default...unless you have a DS.

I've only played Awakening out of all the handhelds so yeah...and it's a weird weird Zelda.

Never much cared for the GB/GBC Zeldas, and they don't really stand the test of time. So probably stay away from Link's Awakening and the Oracle games.
