To be fair though, MGS4 took it to a new level. Doesn't the game open and end with cutscenes that each run well over an hour?

I've got mixed feelings here. One on hand, Kojima's involved, but on the other hand, it's a 3D Castlevania.

So on the one hand, it'll have 80 minute cut scenes and annoying stealth missions, on the other hand, it'll have terrible game play. Bell

Kojima is the second most overrated video game maker around, for the life of me I do not get the appeal of MGS. He's a reluctant video game maker, and earnestly desires to make films. He subscribes to his own superiority on this mark, and like most slaves of the old school of thought considers human interaction a bane of both story and true art and so he misses the fundamental nature of video games. Video Games are action and reaction to the environment presented, the strongest stimulus available by way of being founded in the reality of consequence. From what I understand the best parts of his games are the discovery of consequence for actions that normally are innocuous, like guards discovering your footprints in snow or the like. Its certainly not mechanics(which splinter cell did better) or story(which is a notorious clusterfuck).

Excuse the diatribe.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion, and I don't blame you or other MGS-haters for feeling that way. The cut scenes are definitely long and frequent. It's not everyone's cup of tea.

That said, I don't understand why so many people have bashed MGS4 for these reasons (I haven't played it yet....hoping it comes out for Xbox360). If you've played the previous 3 games, you know what you're getting into. You've had enough evidence by now to know that there's going to be extensive cutscenes. If you don't like it, don't play it. It's not really a legitimate gripe in my eyes.

Bashing MGS4 for having cutscenes is like bashing Kevin Costner for making a bad movie.

I'm not bashing just MGS4, I'm bashing all of them, and specifically his philosophy of making games more artlike by carving out the parts of games that make them a legitimate experience instead of a degenerate overly long movie that he's been moving towards.

Holy...fucking...shit... Shocked

This might be the game that finally makes me go next gen. I mean, Patrick Stewart, Jason Issacs AND fucking Robert Carlyle?! YES PLEASE!! I will GLADLY sit through 80 minute cut scenes if that crew is acting them.

Also, can I just say how much I freaking love Patrick Stewart? Not only is his voice amazing, he is so damn good at injecting *every single world* with exactly the right feeling and inflection, and he always believes 110% in what he's doing, even if its the most absurd dialogue in the world. Thank you, RSC. Thank you so much. <3

I don't think he's going to be Drac though. Why would they have him be the trailer's narrator in that case? I'll bet dollars to donuts Issacs is gonna play him. (Although he'd make a good Belmont too, but...nah, his accent is just too evil. He's gotta be Dracula.)

Well, this game just got better. I only hope that we have Belgrade or someone like him instead of fucking Yuri Lowenthal.

Wow, this actually looks pretty good. Not as cool as the 2D games, but it really captures the feel of my favorite Castlevanias. It does seem sort of like a movie though, and that could turn out bad or good.

Since Kojima is a complete fucking hack, my prediction is that Lords of Shadow will either recycle retarded plot points from the MGS series or be a rip-off of that shitty Van Helsing movie. The main character is named Gabriel Belmont. I predict he will either be:

1. An amnesiac archangel
2. Dracula's "brother", who is also an exact genetic clone of him .
3. If Dracula is not the primary antagonist, then Gabriel and the main antagonist will turn out to be brothers who are both sons of Dracula who are actually his clones.

As far as gameplay goes, at least it looks like it's trying to mix things up a bit. While there's not a single Castlevania game I can say I downright didn't like, the series has tired me out by recycling the same formulas over and over. I've actually never played any MGS games so I don't know if the style is my cup of tea though.

My biggest gripe is the whole reboot thing they've mentioned. I like the Castlevania mythos and I hate when someone comes in and starts retconning shit. Either from now on the old Castlevania story is dead or this one will be ignored next time around and be a stand alone game. When you make a game outside the story's continuity, you basically defeat the purpose of that game existing. If they want to reboot the series, at least finish the story first. All this forshadowing to the year 1999 and they'll probably never get around to it.

Igarashi already did this by de-canonizing Circle of the Moon, Legacy of Darkness, and the first two (only?) GB Castlevania games.

Actually, I believe Legacy of Darkness is canon, and Castlevania 64 isn't. Neither one was at one point, but they re-canonized Legacy by putting Cornell in Judgment.

I want to be enthralled, but I am not.

I guess skepticism got the better of me. I liked the MGS games, but not to the point of considering that a game bearing the "Kojima" brand is going to blast us to the next dimension regardless of how good it really is. I don't trust the studio that's actually developing it. They made Clive Barker's Jericho! And probably saved Hitler's Brain.

Here's hoping it turns out really, really good.

Yeah, I know, it irks me. But he ended up changing his mind and recanonized everything except Legends, which I still consider canon personally. I wish St. Germain would come back, he was awesome.

By the nine hells, yes. I remember his last boss battle as being a little... frustrating, but he was pretty awesome. Top hats rule.
