Just as the title says, the famed studio credited with the creation of all three Metroid Prime game is supposedly working on a game that would reinvent the DK franchise.
Now this is just a rumor, but E3 is just around the corner and Nintendo is going to have some bombshell announcements (they will have to).

Retro Studios' last released project was the Wii compilation Metroid Prime Trilogy and the last we spoke with them, the team was deep into its next project. "I think you'll be very excited when you find out what we're working on," the team told us last year without saying another word.
Donkey Kong is certainly a property that's a far cry from the mature Metroid franchise, but, if the rumors hold true, an attempt at a DK game could certainly stretch the team's creative muscles. The last Donkey Kong game was the Wii-remake of Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat from Nintendo's Tokyo team. Other external studios who have taken a crack at Donkey Kong include Rare with Donkey Kong Country and Donkey Kong 64, Namco with Donkey Konga, and Paon with DK King of Swing. |
All sounds pretty interesting. I must say I am intrigued by the idea of a Retro developed DK.
I had heard rumors a while ago that the secretly developed Retro game was going to be a restart of the Kid Icarus franchise.
I guess we'll see.

This can only mean good things, Nintendo isn't doing jackshit with the series at this point and it's proven to deliver good games in the past. Let's hope for the best.

Honestly, Nintendo has not done much good with the DK name since the original DK arcade games.
Rare did all the DKC games and DK64 (even Diddy Kong Racing), the Konga games suck and don't count.
Outside of that, that's all there has really ever been. An under-utilized franchise indeed.

Yeah, and Rare's pretty much nothing but a shell of it's former self now as alot of it's key employees left. Banjo: Nuts and Bolts is a testament to this, you do NOT completely re-tool a franchise like that if it's been MIA for over ten years. Seriously, fuck whoever made the deicison to ugly up my Banjo-Kazooie.

That game would have been far better if they were to have introduced some completely new protagonists and marketed the game as a new franchise.
The premise and tech behind the game were cool, but I hated the fact that they raped everything Baanjo-Kazooie was in the process.
I still remember getting BK64 on day one, there was not a platformer that deep ever (at least up until then), it really took what M64 introduced to the polished, next-level.

I think I got Banjo-Tooie on the first week of release, I remember it being a bitch to find and I ended up getting it without the case as it was the only one in the whole mall. I didn't get Kazooie until a few years ago recently off of Ebay.

banjo kazooie was cool, but it also made it cool for Rare to have a crap-load of collec-a-thons in their games (SEE: DK64).
the mario vs DK games were cool on the DS. i dont know if a reinvention is necessary (do we need another platformer?!) but im not opposed to this idea.

Mario vs. DK was really fun. I've heard Donkey Konga is a good time too. Wonder why Nintendo stopped with those...

I haven't really followed the DK series since Rare left. I mean sure Donkey Kong 64 wasn't as good as the Country games, however I much prefered it to the shit Nintendo has done with DK since then. I was super pissed when they used him as a pawn for all those stupid multi-player games, since if there's anyone who should be used, it's Donkey Kong Jr. Also fuck Miyamoto for even thinking that the Country games weren't that good to begin with, those games helped reinvent the way we look at games.

Why do people think it's DK? Maybe it'll be Kid Icarus. A new Kid Icarus game has been rumored since SSBB, and that would make more sense for Retro Studios.

Yea, that's what I had heard, said it in OP, I think there may have even been rumors before SSBB.

At various points, rumors attached both Retro and Factor 5 to Kid Icarus.
The quote "I think you'll be very excited when you find out what we're working on." leads me to believe it's not Donkey Kong. A new Donkey Kong property would have to be super-fucking-holy-shit amazing to excite people. It would need to reinvent the wheel. And even then, who cares? It's still Donkey Kong, and who really cares about Donkey Kong?
Meanwhile, a new Kid Icarus will excite people just by existing, much like Metroid Prime did. And if it's actually good, like Metroid Prime was, well that's just icing on the cake. But it wouldn't even need to be good!
The only way a Donkey Kong game would ever be exciting on a console again is if took the original concept and turned it into a 3D platformer. In other words, you'd play as Mario and Donkey Kong would be the antagonist, much like in the Mario vs. DK games. Cuz really, who the hell wants to play as Donkey Kong? He's not a very good protagonist.
On another note, Nintendo needs to crank out another Punch-Out for the Wii. The first one was amazing, and it wouldn't take much effort.

I think DK is doomed to cameo status. Donkey Kong got lucky with the DKC series, that's what really cemented him to relevant status. But in reality, they could have made that game with any property using those graphics, it didn't need to be Donkey Kong. I can see that Nintendo is desperate to find him another shtick to make him needed again. Jungle Beat and King of Swing tried something different so that it wouldn't be just another average platformer. DK just doesn't fill a niche for Nintendo. But then again, leave it to Nintendo to prove wrong all those who have lost faith.

You know, I kind of actually hope that if there is a new Kid Icarus on the horizon, that they keep it 2D. I can not imagine a Kid Icarus game making the leap to 3D without being a- shitty or b- derivative of too much other shit out there.
If (slightly off topic), given the current gen systems (Wii and PS3, respectively), they make new 2D Kid Icarus and Castlevania games, you guys won't see me for awhile. It'll take an incredibly long shower to wash off the splooge from that massive fanboygasm.

Not only is that not right, that's not even wrong. It's a meaningless statement. Saying something is "one molecule away" from plastic is like saying a farm is one letter away from a fart. Water is "one molecule away" from being explosive hydrogen gas. |

Nintendo has a distinct lack of car-stealing, crap-flinging, hooker-stabbing games. DK could fill that niche. They could call it Donkey Kong: Goin' Bananas!

Or, more appropriately, Donkey Kong: Goin' Apeshit.

Goin' Bananas sounds more innocent. I could see a lot of unsuspecting parents being in for a huge shock. They'll see Donkey Kong and not even notice the M rating. It'll be great.

Goin' Bananas? Goin' Apeshit? Are they making a new Rampage game or something?
And who wants to play as Donkey Kong? Uhhh ME!!!!? Donkey Kong was fucking awesome when he was going up against King K. Rool and his kremlings, it felt "right". Sure you could replace D.K. with anyone else, just like you could do with any platformer back then or any FPS you do nowadays. The thing is, you can have a Mario-style platformer and not call it Mario, yet it would be alright. If Galaxy 2 has taught me anything, it's that I don't want any more Mario games for a long time.
