I'm going abroad for a while soon. Since I'm too cheap to buy a DS or PSP, I'm looking for old stuff to play on the road, preferably good action/platformers or puzzle games. Any recommendations?

Tetris. In fact, most any puzzle game for Game Boy will hold you over.

Also, the Super Mario Advance games.

Mario Vs. Donkey Kong (the original, the sequels, for the DS, suck massive ass)
Zelda: The Minish Cap (not technically an RPG, and anyone who thinks Zelda is an RPG hasn't played Final Fantasy games or D & D)
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow
Megaman and Bass
Metroid Zero Mission and Fusion (not many liked Fusion, but I did)
any of the NES Classics series, really

Not only is that not right, that's not even wrong. It's a meaningless statement. Saying something is "one molecule away" from plastic is like saying a farm is one letter away from a fart. Water is "one molecule away" from being explosive hydrogen gas.

I agree with FNJ on Mega Man Zero. Seriously, the first one is my favorite game on the GBA.

Astro Boy: Omega Factor is a pretty good GBA action game and I agree with Undeath about Zelda: The Minish Cap. It's the only Zelda game I actually loved and completed besides Windwaker and it is very reminiscent of Link to the Past, so you know it's good.

I forgot about gunstar super heroes! Guardian heroes is also good. Final fight one and the remake of river city ransom are fun as well.

Yea, the RCR remake was prettty good.

Wario Ware is also great, but also you should get Advance Wars. It is strategy, not really an RPG.

The Sonic Advance series is pretty solid.

Also, Kirby: Nightmare In Dream Land, which is a fantastic remake of the NES game.

Wow, cannot believe I forgot the Sonic Advance series, it is indeed pretty solid.

Lots of good remakes in general though, there is a pretty good Link to the Past remake in the Four Swords version.

That's less a remake than just a straight port of the SNES game, but it is good nonetheless. If you've already played LTTP to death on SNES though, I'd skip it and go for Minish Cap instead as it plays just like LTTP, but is new/different.

Don't forget LoZ: Oracle of Seasons and Ages

Although, perhaps the LoZ series deviates too far into RPG territory for his tastes?

Here would be some of my recommendations:

Castlevania Series
Megaman Zero Series
Advance Wars
Wario Ware
Kirby and the Amazing Mirror
Megaman Battle Network 2,3 and/or 6 (although the series does border a bit close to a RPG)

I had no idea they made a new Gunstar Heroes! That was one of my favorites on the Genesis. When I make it out to the game shop tomorrow I hope they have that one.

@Andrew Man: Zelda's good stuff, I'm just not feeling any level-grinding, turn based combat, random encounters, etc. at the moment.

In that case, I am going to really recommend the Metroid titles for the GBA as well.

I picked up Tetris, Super Mario Advance 1 and 2. I'll probably get the Metroids, Sonics, and some of the others online later on, but these should hold me over for now. Thanks all!
