...for the first time since art class in high school, well over 11 years ago at this point. I draw a lot, and fill out some nice pieces with colored pencil or regular black and white pencil with shading, but recently, I caught the itch to paint. I didn't think I was as good at painting as I was at drawing, but I seem to have picked it up reasonably well, and the shit I've painted has turned out great, or at least in my mind great enough to encourage me to paint more. Almost to the point of all-consuming.
Before I start unveiling the "masterpieces", bear in mind that A: I'm a huge nerd, and B: I've had an 8-bit sprite kick lately. These are pretty sequential, including unfinished stuff leading into finished stuff. And sorry for the quality, my webcam batteries are dead, and I'm broke right now after paying a house note so I'm using my cell phone cam.
First, I decided to just freehand it and practice something I knew how to draw back and forth, something I've been drawing since Kindergarten: Mario. I more or less just threw some paints down and mixed without drawing guiding lines, so it's a mixed bag, and I ended up using it as a makeshift pallette, explaining all the splotches around Mario's malformed head.
http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=5904579&id=509704166
THEN I decided to do something anyone who's renewing their skill at painting should do-- a landscape. Then I figured, what the hell? Why not throw in Mario and a coin box while I'm at it?
http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=5904580&id=509704166
Then, it begins. I feel more comfortable handling paints and brushes and stuff, so it's time. Megaman time.
http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=5904582&id=509704166
I won't lie, I almost became intoxicated with 'awesome' at this point. Therefore, I decide I can't just stop at Megaman, it's time to add some secondary characters in there. Dr. Wily and Protoman, come on down!
http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=5939589&id=509704166
But then, I got a little carried away. Why stop there, I thought. Let's throw in Dr, Light, Roll, and a background from a stage I chose at random, which ended up being Cutman's. Finished this fucker! A little cluttered, for damn sure (where does Roll end and Wily begin??!), but I like it.
http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=5943671&id=509704166
At this point, I'm having so much fun painting this shit and getting feedback from Facebook friends, I decide to post updates while I'm at it. I do the outline before adding color.
http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=5944185&id=509704166
...and then, promptly add color.
http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=5944469&id=509704166
This is turning out too well, I thought. Time to begin on the coup de grace.
http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=5945501&id=509704166
Yes, that's right. Super Mario Bros. 3, full stop. I don't plan on calling this one finished until it looks like a goddamn screenshot. To that effect, time to add another character.
http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=5946250&id=509704166
Despite enough caffeine running through my veins now to twitch me and mess me up on occasion, the beauty of paint is, well, I'm able to paint over my mistakes. However, I'm loving how this is turning out so far.
And that's where I've stopped so far. I'm going to get back on it. Let me know what you guys think. If they suck, they suck, because after all I'm really rusty on painting and doing it for a nerdy but productive hobby, but I'm really fond of them and proud of myself at the same time.
I will be posting more as I finish more.

Not only is that not right, that's not even wrong. It's a meaningless statement. Saying something is "one molecule away" from plastic is like saying a farm is one letter away from a fart. Water is "one molecule away" from being explosive hydrogen gas. |

I love the 8-bit stuff. King Hippo was a great idea.

I tried directly linking them, but either I suck at it, or Facebook is a nazi.
Six posts in and already invoking Godwin's Law!

I hotlink stuff from my myspace all the time, it's pretty much the only reason I still have one.

No, you can go ahead and Imageshack them. If anyone beyond here sees them, just make sure to give proper credit.
And now, an addition. I've gotten about 40% of the way through with a Mario 3 painting. Check it:

Although it's probably annoying my friends because I upload every time I make significant progress on one (as opposed to just uploading the finished thing), I find it more interesting to post it as I go. Maybe it's pretentious, but I like the idea of seeing a blank piece of paper look like random blobs, turning into shapes, into pixels, into forms, into recognizable characters, into a finished world in frame. I almost wish I'd taken a picture of Mega Man while he was still just nothing but an outline. You'll probably notice I did something to that effect with King Hippo, and I really love the difference between the simple outline and the finished thing.
I'm going to do one more 8-bit one, then a couple of freehand, actual paintings, then back to 8-bit. I know the next 8-bit one will be Zelda, but I'm torn on which Zelda I'm going to do, the original or Zelda II. Once I get more ballsy, I'm going to start doing 16 bit ones. I'm already ambitious enough to attempt Mario World, Link to the Past and Final Fantasy ones, but I need to get used to it a bit more.

those are good! well done sir!
for a second I thought your post read "pointing" instead of painting and I thought that was a little strange
|
Let's assume it's a mixture of the two!

That would be interesting... And funny as hell if applied to the right situations.

Added some more detail, the next time I post a picture of it, it'll probably be done--

I'd consider Deviantart, but I'd think my stuff would get lost in a sea of Sonic fanboys and furries.

Very nice, I am particularly impressed by the Paratroopa and Peach, they look very accurate. Also, what FNJ said.

OK, so I decided to attempt something a lot harder and freehand a Street Fighter II painting. I feel kinda mixed about how it's coming, but you might enjoy it. I feel it's not terrible for not even sketching it out first, but considering it looks kind of odd just painting it directly, maybe I should've?
