Dawn of Souls is too easy. It's like playing Mystic Quest. Now, I'm not saying that every RPG should be a mega grindfest, but you should have to do SOME grinding. I don't think I had to grind once when I played the DoS version of FF1. I ran through the 75% of the game with absolutely no effort, and then quit because I was so disgusted with it. Grinding may not be the most fun thing ever, but it's better than a game where you just mash away to victory.

Ugh, Dawn of Souls is SO BAD.

I still need to crack open Ys Book I & II. I have high hopes for it.

I like the style revamp and it was long enough to be my only GBA game for quite some time.

And you really do need to get started on Ys, especially given your affinity towards Crystalis. It has a pretty similar feel, and it's even better than Crystalis imo.

I can't consider a game like Paper Mario an RPG. Just can't...

I've tried to play those games so many times and could never get into them. The theme and systems are nice at first, but grow stale and gimmicky very quickly.

Good to see some Dragon Warrior III fans here. That was my favorite RPG for a long time.

It's really friggin' hard trying to come up with a top ten, as there's a ton of RPGs that I like, but here goes:

1.Parasite Eve
2.Dragon Warrior III (GBC version)
3.Fallout 3
4.Oblivion
5.Final Fantasy Legend
6.Final Fantasy X
7.Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance
8.Sweet Home
9.Ultima: Quest of the Avatar
10.The World Ends With You

Also, if I were allowed an extended list, it would go something like this:
11.Earthbound
12.Magic of Scheherazade
13.Pokemon Gold
14.Castlevania II
15.Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
16.Chrono Trigger
17.Xenogears
18.Phantasy Star 3
19.Super Mario RPG
20.Parasite Eve 2
21.The Bard's Tale
22.Faxanadu

...looking at this list makes me realize how much time I've invested into RPGs.

Also, I consider River City Ransom to be more of an action game with RPG-related elements more than an RPG.

the vital elements are similiar to bof 1 and 2, even the graphics aren't to far from the predecessors. its bigger in a way, there are many cool sidequests like a whole fairy town you are able to build up and a uniqe master-student system for the main character, where you have to find a couple of different master to learn from them your magic and other attacks. it has frustrating moments like a giant desert you must navigate yourself through with... well mostly with your imagination. But overall, the game rocks like hell. It was very well made, remembering the last dungeon really brings me back the mood i had while i was playing it. Oh, and it got different Endings... two diffrent Endings i think. And the maincharacter is able to turn on the Super Saiyan Mode when you transform into the secret Kaiser Dragon (he gets golden hair and stuff).

I really dig your RPG tastes. That would basically be my list as well. It's kind of sad to see so much hate for FF7 these days, but I can see why people got exhausted of it. That, and Skies of Arcadia is one of the most underappreciated RPG's I've ever played.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.

I keep seeing Castlevania SOTN on here, come on people, it is an Action-Platformer with RPG elements, it does not stand as an RPG on it's own.

Great game nonetheless.

That holds for a few games listed here:
Diablo II
Deus Ex
Mass Effect

They all contain RPG elements true, but they also are more action based.

Diablo was more of a hack and slash action game then RPG. (ARPG)

Deus Ex was more of a FPS then a RPG. (FPARPG)

And Mass Effect is more of a Third Person Shooter then a RPG. (TPARPG)

I think someone needs to set a law for what makes a RPG game, a True RPG game. And, I can't think of anyone better suited then me! (Though, you guys can help.)

IS IT A TRUE RPG?
If the answer is No to any of the following questions, then it is not a true RPG, but a hybrid RPG of some sort.

1. Can you beat the game without having to use any real hand/eye-coordination other than selecting options in a menu, selecting a target, or moving your character around from place to place? (Things such as having to manually target opponents in real time would be a "no".)

2. Does your character(s) evolve over the course of the game? Do they get stronger, faster, more health, better abilities, etc?

3. Does the game's story involve any of the following: Saving a member of the opposite sex, saving the land/kingdom/world/galaxy/universe, a final boss battle that takes longer than 10 minutes to complete?

4. Do you get to do any of the following: Make choices at some point about how to proceed, Get to travel freely to a destination of your choice, Make decisions that can alter the story and/or ending of the game.

5. Would the average 13 year old Halo/Counter Strike/Modern Warfare 2/Madden addicted gamer walk past this without giving it a 2nd glance? (Unless there was a hot girl on the cover, then a 2nd glance is acceptable, but after looking at the back of the game case he puts it back in disgust and moves on.)

*************************

That's what I can come up with for now.

Or the simpler version, which I think sums up all True RPGs perfectly:

Can you beat the game on the first play through with one hand?

Knyte, I call bullshit. You don't have turn-based gameplay in Baldur's Gate or Icewind Dale or Planescape Torment. Are you calling these games non-RPGs?

How about DragonAge: Origins? It has real-time action, but otherwise is a straight up RPG. (I'm fucking in love with this game, BTW)

Yes and No. Dragon Age can be be paused at any time to select targets, and you don't have to do anything other than click on a target to attack it. You don't have to aim you shots, or hit buttons everytime you want to swing your weapon. So, it stands as a TRPG. (True RPG)

I don't see how any of this constitutes a true RPG. In regards to the third rule, an RPG can have wildly varying storylines, so I don't think the plot of the game has anything at all to do with it being an RPG. In regards to the fourth rule, an RPG can be extremely linear or can give you a large amount of freedom, so that doesn't have anything to do with RPGs either. In regards to the fifth rule, you're forgetting that the "average 13 year old Halo/Counter Strike/Modern Warfare 2/Madden" gamer would walk away from most RPGs, not just non-hybrid ones.

As for that last rule, that could only mean that a "true-RPG" would have to be turn-based, as I'd probably need both hands for an RPG that uses an active-time-battle based system.

Even ATB based games are menu choice driven. And, don't most of them allow you to auto-cycle through targets?

Also, name a classic RPG that does meet the criteria I laid out?

Final Fantasy I-XIII = Check
Dragon Warrior I-IX = Check
Baulders Gate/Planscape/Icewind Dale = Check
Neverwinter Nights I+II= Check
Dragon Age = Check
Every SSI AD&D Goldbox game = Check
Ultima I - IX = Check
Wizardry Series = Check

See, where I am going with this?

Also, I beat every PSX RPG I played with this:

Image

From Rapsody to Suikoden I+II to Final Fantasy IX.

What the hell? These games can be paused at any time and you can set it to pause automatically after every turn, just like any Black Isle game.

Planescape:Torment hands down. It's one of my favorite games ever. I played it so many times, walking the different paths that the Nameless One could take... really epic stuff. And so many original and quirky companions! Not to mention interesting locales to explore.

Also, Fallout and... Arcanum. I've always considered Troika's game something of an underdog. It's very open-ended, and the characters are highly customizable. Also, an enthralling background and story.

I borrowed Mystic Quest from a friend and played it until I managed to locked myself IN the ice castle. Then I got pissed off that this could happen in an RPG and gave the game back.

Also, best RPG ever is Chrono Trigger. Others have been made with better graphics since, but it had the best graphics of almost any game at the time, the soundtrack was awesome, the story was original and interesting and it had great replay value with all the optional quests and many endings.

Plus the main character dies, which is unusual, and a side quest allows you to save him.
