violent boyfriend forced pregnant girlfriend to sign an 'abuse contract'

A violent boyfriend forced his pregnant girlfriend to sign an 'abuse contract' allowing him to beat her whenever he wanted.

Under the terms of the contract Graydon Smith,31, was allowed to punch, kick and throttle his 19 year old girlfriend.

His only restriction was that he wasn't allowed to punch her stomach.
The bizarre contract was revealed after police arrested him for assaulting his girlfriend at their home in Seattle, Washington.

The victim's stepfather had called police when he called at the house and saw Smith throttling his daughter.

Smith admitted to police that he had made his girlfriend, who has not been named, sign the contract giving him free rein to carry out domestic abuse.
Seattle police detective Elizabeth Ellis said: 'Graydon made her sign a statement giving him permission to physically abuse her anywhere on her body except on her pregnant belly.'

When police arrested Smith they found his girlfriend with bruises and cuts to her face. She confirmed her boyfriend was responsible for the assault.
Unemployed Smith has been charged with assault and harassment. He is being held on $75,000 bond.

Yeah, there's no way in Hell that a contract like that would be legally binding. He needs some bullets added to his face. I'm in a dark mood today, but I'd think that anyway.

So basically, he beat his girlfriend and wanted to keep beating her so he probably beat her until she signed the contract...

You know the most disturbing part of this whole thing is that he thought something like this would actually offer him any kind of legal protection whatsoever. Confused

Well not if she was coerced, which she obviously was. Granted it makes NO sense for a guy to threaten a girl so he can make her sign a contract that...allows him...to threaten her...but then this guy is clearly more than a few cards short of a deck.

Isn't the phrase "free reign" not "free rein"?

It was probably a play for control. If he could get her to believe the contract, she'd be less likely to try to get help.

Contracts against public policy are not enforceable.

Not defending this guy, since he's scum and the "permission" is probably coerced, but if you do give someone permission to assault you, that is a defense against assault charges, at least civilly.

A little off topic, but I gotta answer this. It should be "rein." It's derived from horsemanship, as in, "to give a horse free rein" to go where he pleases.

I think the confusion comes in that "reign" means to rule. So you'd think free reign means to be free to do what you will (as well.) People use both, and both kinda make sense, but 'rein' is the original (and "correct") form of the expression.

All my future abuse contracts are gonna use reign instead of rein, that way I'll be well within my legal rights to shout Now I shall reign in blood!

31 and 19...isn't that lovely? Oh AND he's unemployed. Even better. I wish there were more people like me, that way we could all band together and just get rid of these sort of people. They serve no purpose to society and break the rules of being civil. I don't care the excuse he has, hang 'em high.

In all seriousness I wouldn't want one that young, I'm almost 26 and the difference in intelligence / life expereince / whatever would really be a turn off.

Let's assume it's a mixture of the two!

It wouldn't matter which sperm made it. This guy was created by his father who beat him and his mother. It's a chain and a pattern that can be traced for generations as abusers are usually created by their own abuse filled childhoods as opposed to just being born that way.

1. Contract was signed under duress, which makes it invalid.
2. According to the article, the woman wasn't getting anything in the contract. A contract is only binding if it involves both parties doing something (Paying X amount of money is doing something) in the future (a dying CEO telling an employee "I will pay you $1,000,000 for all the hard work you've done here" is not binding and could not be enforced, even if the employee could prove it was said. He would have to offer the money as payment for the subsequent 5 minutes of work, for example).

Good point. Contracts need consideration.

Doesn't a contract between private parties need an additional signature from a public notary to be valid?

I'm not a bad enough dude, but I am an edgy little shit. I'll do what I can.

Nope. All you need for a contract to take place is an offer ("I'll sell you that candy bar for a buck"), an acceptance ("Okay, sure!"), and consideration (the exchange of candy for money).

Certain contracts, like those involving real estate or long durations, need to be in writing and it always helps to get witnesses when you're dealing with serious shit like buying houses, but they usually aren't required.
