I think the Grandia series is severely underrated, Grandia 2 is my favorite RPG of all-time. Most RPGs go for great story and characters, which is fine, but they usually sacrifice gameplay as a result. Grandia series, I believe, has the best turn-based battle system ever, it's one of the few games where I actually enjoyed powering up. The stories may have been nothing special, but were still pretty good.

Tomba
In an age where 3D games were the craze, Tomba was a sidescroller with 3D and RPG aspects. It was a hell of a lot of fun and I never hear anyone ever talk about it.

I love this game, despite always getting stuck everywhere at first. When I actually started to understand English a little bit, I could finally understand what the hell that Fortune Teller was saying and managed to find the Fire Pig. The only one you can capture before this one is the Storm Pig, so I couldn't do much until I captured it.
I wasted way too much time trying to get the gold medal in the motocross course though, and I had to use a walkthrough for the last few events (in both games).
I don't know if it's really underrated or not (on GameFAQs it's insanely popular), but Digimon World 1.
Pretty unique game, and still very fun despite the glitchfest. Quite challenging too, as some Ultimates are really damn hard to get, though I got far just by buying a ton of items.

Never played Grandia, but speaking of underrated RPG's, and I know I've mentioned this game a million times on this site...Destiny of an Emperor! Best NES RPG ever! Best RPG Capcom ever did too. Easily. And also Blaster Master was a seriously awesome game as well as Crystalis. An undermentioned NES gem similar to, but in most ways better than the original Zelda.

Yup, that Motocross race using the wine was a pain. What I really liked about the second game was the fact that you could fight any of the Evil Pigs at your discretion, however the first game you're forced to fight the Fire Pig in order to get through the volcano.
If I do have one complaint about the 1st game, the main Evil Pig was a fucking joke. He has to be one of the easiest bosses ever. It's almost impossible to fail against this guy since he doesn't attack you if you don't attack him. And even the bag is placed in a shitty manner that it's so damn easy to just line yourself up with it and throw. Also I found it weird how many anime short movies were at the begining, only to have virtually none the rest of the game.
I never played Digimon, but I almost bought it when it came out. Instead I bought Sim Theme Park, which was probably the worst game I ever paid $50 for.
Another really fun PS1 game was Einhander, it's definately my favorite side-shooter.

Totally. I lost so many hours of my life to this game between the age of 10-14, it's ridiculous.

I second Shatterhand on the NES. Seriously awesome.
Also, what the fuck is up with the hate on all of the Mega Man games after 3?

Loved this game back in the day. Goofy characters, vivid artwork, great intertwining quests, just plain fun. Love it!

Gex for the 3DO. I had a friend lend me his 3DO when I was a kid and this game kept me entertained for hours, classic. In 1994 those graphics were so damn amazing...
